Waves and the sediment they carry work on cracks, softer layers, and other weak zones; once the remaining roof can no longer support itself, it falls. A sea stack may remain offshore, but it too continues to erode.
How a sea arch forms—and why it is temporary
A sea arch is part of a sequence of coastal erosion. Waves attack a weak area in a rocky headland and enlarge a recess into a sea cave. If erosion works through the headland—sometimes from both sides—the opening becomes an arch. Continued erosion enlarges the opening and wears away its roof until the span fails. An isolated remnant can then stand offshore as a sea stack. The National Park Service describes this progression in its guides to sea caves and coastal landforms.

How waves and rock structure work together
Weak zones give erosion a route
Rock is not equally resistant everywhere. Joints and faults, as well as dikes, veins, and softer layers, can provide pathways or preferential targets for erosion. Waves and carried sediment exploit those weak areas, while more resistant rock may persist. The resulting cliff and arch shape reflects the bedrock’s composition, layering, and structure—not simply the passage of time. See the NPS overviews of weak zones in coastal rock and rocky-coast landforms.
Water, air, and sediment do the wearing
Wave erosion is more than a steady push against a cliff. Water impact and air compressed in cracks can help dislodge fractured rock and loose particles; sediment carried by waves also abrades and works on weak zones. The effect depends on wave energy and characteristics, as well as the material being exposed. This uneven attack can undercut or fracture parts of an arch while other sections remain, gradually changing the support beneath its roof. The NPS explains these processes in its overview of coastal erosion.

Why collapse timing cannot be read from the landform alone
These processes explain how arches fail, but the sources do not establish a universal lifespan, collapse rate, or validated way to forecast the failure date of a particular arch. Conditions and rock structure differ from site to site, and an arch’s visible shape alone does not provide a reliable timetable.
To compare two arches, the relevant factors include the rock type and layering, the orientation and extent of joints or other weaknesses, exposure to wave energy and sediment, and the condition of the supporting base and roof. These factors help explain differences, but the cited NPS material does not provide a quantitative ranking formula or collapse-rate calculation.

Hōlei Sea Arch: a documented collapse, not a forecast
The National Park Service reported that Hōlei Sea Arch at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, about 90 feet tall before its collapse, was still standing on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and had collapsed by Sunday night, September 27. The exact time of collapse was unknown. That observed interval is a record of one event, not a general estimate for other arches.

This history illustrates how multiple local conditions can matter without establishing a pattern all arches follow. The park’s October 1, 2026 release also warns visitors to keep away from unstable cliff edges and closed areas around the former arch site because of falling and drowning hazards.
