The Moon is expected to pass in front of Jupiter on October 6, 2026, but whether you see the planet disappear depends on your location. In parts of eastern North America and the Caribbean, the event is predicted before dawn; parts of Africa may see it in daylight. Check the local prediction before setting an alarm, and use extra caution if observing with optics while the Sun is up.
What is a lunar occultation of Jupiter?
An occultation occurs when one celestial body passes in front of another from a particular observer’s line of sight. During this event, the Moon’s edge gradually covers Jupiter, and the planet later emerges from the Moon’s opposite edge. The European Southern Observatory describes this characteristic sequence in its account of a previous Jupiter occultation.

The event is not visible in the same way everywhere. The October 6 guide identifies parts of North America, the Caribbean, and Africa as visibility regions. Outside the occultation path, Jupiter and the Moon may appear close together without the Moon covering the planet.

The event guide predicts a pre-dawn view from eastern North America and the Caribbean, and a late-morning-to-early-afternoon view from parts of Africa. These broad regions do not establish the exact circumstances at every town. To check whether Jupiter disappears from your location and get local contact times, use the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Local Prediction of Lunar Occultation of Planet tool. A NASA Night Sky Network listing for Virginia Beach gives a more detailed, site-specific prediction for October 6: Europa’s first contact at 4:14 a.m. EDT, Jupiter’s first contact around 4:20 a.m., the planet beginning to emerge at 5:24 a.m., and full reappearance at 5:26 a.m. EDT. At the start, the listing places the target about 17 degrees above the horizon at azimuth 084 degrees. Those circumstances apply to Virginia Beach, not to North America generally; the low altitude there makes an unobstructed eastern horizon important.

What will the event look like?
In a favorable pre-dawn location, Jupiter appears as a bright point beside the waning crescent Moon. Without optical aid, the main sight is Jupiter disappearing at the Moon’s edge and returning later. Whether you can follow both contacts depends on local geometry, the horizon, weather, and sunrise.
Binoculars or a telescope can show the sequence more closely, including Jupiter’s disk and its Galilean moons. The guide’s New York example describes Europa, Callisto, Io, Jupiter’s main body, and Ganymede reaching the lunar edge at different times; it says the main body takes about 65 seconds to be covered in that example. The duration and contact order should not be assumed for other locations.

Do you need binoculars or a telescope?
No special equipment is required for the basic view when the event is visible before dawn and conditions cooperate. NASA’s skywatching guidance puts it simply: “You don’t have to have any special gear for skywatching.”
| Option | What it adds | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Unaided eyes | The broad spectacle of Jupiter disappearing and returning. | Shows less detail than optical equipment. |
| Binoculars | A wider, closer view; NASA notes that binoculars can show Jupiter’s four largest moons. | Steadier viewing is easier with a tripod, especially at higher magnification. |
| Telescope | A closer view of Jupiter and more planetary detail. | Narrower field of view and more setup than binoculars. |
Choose based on your local circumstances and the view you want, not on a belief that a particular instrument is necessary. Safety and a clear view of the relevant part of the sky matter more than magnification.

How to observe safely, especially in daylight
A pre-dawn view of the Moon and Jupiter is not itself solar viewing. However, parts of the event are predicted for daylight. NASA JPL warns: “Never point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera near the Sun unless you’re using proper solar-safe equipment.” Looking at or near the Sun through optics can cause serious eye injury.

- Do not improvise a solar filter or assume ordinary sunglasses, camera filters, or an unfiltered instrument protect your eyes.
- If you cannot be certain the Sun will remain safely clear of the optical path, do not use binoculars, a telescope, or a camera to observe the event.
The event guide places the Moon and Jupiter about 52 degrees west of the Sun for its described circumstances, but that is not a substitute for safe handling or a guarantee that an observing setup is safe. Follow NASA JPL’s solar-viewing safety guidance.
Quick Recap
Plan your observing session
- Check your exact location: Use the NAOJ local prediction tool to confirm whether the occultation is visible and see the local contact times.
- Check the sky and horizon: Look for local weather forecasts and identify an unobstructed view of the relevant horizon. The Virginia Beach prediction, for example, begins at a low altitude.
- Decide whether daylight changes your equipment choice: If the event occurs after sunrise where you are, do not use optics unless you can reliably prevent the Sun from entering their optical path.
- Arrive early: Be ready before the predicted first contact so you can locate the Moon and Jupiter and settle into a safe, steady viewing position.
