Saving model weights preserves the learned parameters, not the complete recipe that produced an image. To reproduce a local image-generation run, you also need the exact model and pipeline components, prompts, random seed and generator state, sampler or scheduler, inference settings, software versions, precision, and hardware or backend. Even with those recorded, identical pixels are most realistic to expect in the same pinned environment—not across arbitrary machines or software releases.
Why can the same seed produce a different image?
A diffusion pipeline uses random noise as part of image generation, and the seed initializes the random-number generator that supplies it. But the seed is only one input. A changed model revision, prompt, scheduler, step count, dimensions, numerical precision, software implementation, or device can change the result. PyTorch explicitly cautions that completely reproducible results are not guaranteed across releases or platforms (PyTorch reproducibility notes).

There is also a stateful detail: a generator’s random state advances as it is used. Reusing the same generator object for a second run does not necessarily repeat the first run. For a fresh attempt, create or reseed the generator rather than assuming its original state remains intact. Diffusers recommends using a CPU generator when reproducibility is important (Diffusers: Reusing seeds and reproducibility).

What should you save to recreate a run?
Keep the original weights and a record of the full configuration. The following checklist combines the documented sources of variation; it is a practical record, not a universal official manifest.
#1 Best Overall
- Model and components: model name and revision or a checksum where available, plus the relevant pipeline components and add-ons such as adapters.
- Inputs: exact prompt and negative prompt, if used, and the seed. Record whether a fresh generator was created or reseeded for the run.
- Generation settings: sampler or scheduler, number of steps, image dimensions, and numerical precision.
- Execution environment: interface or pipeline version, framework and library versions, device, backend, and relevant hardware.
- Workflow: export the workflow or configuration from the local interface if it supports export, and keep a plain-text run record as well.
Do not assume a saved PNG contains the complete recipe. The reviewed documentation does not establish that every interface writes all relevant settings into image metadata.
How can you make reruns more repeatable?
- Recreate the random state. Set a fixed PyTorch seed and seed other random-number generators used by the application, such as Python’s
randomor NumPy, where applicable. In Diffusers, pass a CPUGeneratorwhen reproducibility matters, and instantiate or reseed it before each run because generation consumes its state (Diffusers seed guidance). - Use deterministic controls supported by your stack. PyTorch provides deterministic-algorithm controls; its documentation also discusses disabling cuDNN benchmarking. Diffusers’ reproducibility helper configures CUDA-related settings and disables TF32. Follow instructions for the exact framework and software version you run rather than assuming one setting covers every source of variation (PyTorch reproducibility notes;
torch.use_deterministic_algorithmsdocumentation). - Pin and record the environment. Keep framework, library, pipeline, device, and backend details alongside the run settings. Determinism controls cannot make different implementations or platforms behave identically (Diffusers 0.25.0: Create reproducible pipelines).
There are trade-offs. Deterministic operations may run more slowly, and a requested operation can raise an error when no deterministic implementation is available. PyTorch also notes that enabling deterministic algorithms alone is not always enough to make an application reproducible (torch.use_deterministic_algorithms API documentation).
What should you expect across machines?
Reproducing a run on the same machine with the same pinned software and settings is a more attainable goal than matching pixels across different hardware or software versions. Results can diverge because random-number generation, numeric precision, backend algorithms, and platform implementations differ. Diffusers notes that some GPU pipelines need the same hardware and PyTorch version for full reproducibility (Diffusers 0.25.0 reproducibility guide).
In practice, treat a seed as part of a saved recipe, not as a portable guarantee. Archive the weights, workflow, run configuration, and environment details together; then recreate the generator and run under the recorded conditions.
