For anything that may require a password reset or future notices, use an email alias that forwards to an inbox you control—or your regular email account.
First, choose the right kind of email address
“Disposable email” can mean two different things. A temporary inbox holds messages for a short time and then expires. An email mask or alias forwards messages to a lasting inbox while hiding your real address from the site. A standard email account is the durable option when you need ongoing correspondence and reliable account recovery.

| Option | Where messages go | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary inbox | A separate, short-lived inbox | A one-time confirmation for a low-stakes signup | The address or messages may expire before you need them again; some sites block temporary domains. |
| Forwarding alias | Your regular inbox | Accounts you may continue using, while keeping your real address private from the site | You rely on the alias provider and forwarding to keep working, and the site may reject the alias. |
| Ordinary email account | A durable inbox you control | Important accounts, recovery messages, and ongoing correspondence | The site receives the address you provide, unless you use a separate account or alias. |
When a temporary email address is a good fit
Use a temporary inbox only when the signup is low-stakes, you expect to need one message, and you are comfortable losing access to the address afterward. It can keep a one-off signup out of your regular inbox without tying that signup to an address you plan to retain.
10 Minute Mail describes its free service as a no-signup, receive-only inbox that expires after ten minutes by default, with an option to extend the session. Those are the provider’s claims, not independent test results. Its site also says some websites block temporary email domains. See 10 Minute Mail’s service details.
#1 Best Overall
Do not use a short-lived address for banking, healthcare, government services, work, or any account you may need to recover. A later password-reset message or account notice can go to an inbox you can no longer access.
When an email alias is better
A forwarding alias gives a site a different address from your real one while delivering messages to an inbox you keep. This is usually a better fit than a temporary inbox for an account you expect to use again: you can continue receiving notices and recovery emails without giving each site your main address. An alias is still part of your account-access plan; if forwarding stops or you lose access to the alias provider, messages may not reach you.

Firefox Relay
Mozilla Support says the free version allows up to 50 masks and requires a Mozilla account and the Relay extension. These are current product details and may change. Mozilla says masks are available in most countries, but some websites reject them. The company also says it collects the websites where masks are used unless you opt out, and may temporarily store messages during an outage for no longer than three days. These are Mozilla’s statements, not independent privacy findings. Read Mozilla’s Firefox Relay mask information and Firefox Relay’s FAQ.
SimpleLogin
SimpleLogin lets users create aliases for individual websites and route incoming messages to chosen real email addresses. Its documentation also describes custom-domain aliases, which require DNS setup, and the ability to send and receive email anonymously. The product page identifies SimpleLogin as part of Proton. These product descriptions do not establish an independent privacy ranking. See SimpleLogin and its documentation.
Will websites know you’re using temp mail?
They may. A site can reject a temporary address or mask based on its domain. Mozilla says some sites do not accept addresses with a Relay subdomain, and others accept only addresses from a limited set of mainstream providers. A failed signup does not mean every temporary-email service is blocked, nor does it mean an alias will work; acceptance varies by site and address.
If a site rejects an address, use an address permitted by its rules rather than trying to evade its restrictions. For an account you need to keep, choose an ordinary account or a legitimate forwarding alias the service accepts.

How to pick without sacrificing account recovery
- Decide whether you will need the account again. If you might need resets, receipts, notices, or support messages, do not use an expiring inbox.
- Choose the destination. Use a temporary inbox for a one-time message; use a forwarding alias for ongoing mail while masking your main address; use a regular account when durable access matters most.
- Check service requirements. A no-signup temporary inbox may be quick but short-lived. An alias service may require an account, browser extension, or setup steps, and may impose a free-tier limit.
- Review provider practices. Masking hides your real address from the recipient, not from the provider handling your messages. Read what the provider says it collects and how it handles mail, including during outages.
- Keep recovery routes current. For important accounts, use an address you control long term and keep recovery details up to date.
What “free” and “private” do—and do not—tell you
A free tier can have limits, account requirements, geographic restrictions, or features that change. For example, Mozilla currently documents up to 50 free masks and availability in most countries; neither detail guarantees availability or terms will remain the same. Check the provider’s current documentation before relying on a feature.

Consider the provider’s data-handling statements and the consequences of losing access.
