Sam Altman’s “punch a bully back in the nose” remark was a figure of speech about standing up to Elon Musk, not a literal call for violence. In an interview with Vanity Fair, as reported by Digit through Business Insider, Altman described Musk as a bully and said he would still work with him.

What did Sam Altman say about Elon Musk?

Digit reported on 6 October 2026 that Altman said: “I think once in a while you’ve got to punch a bully back in the nose,” adding, “And I also think Elon, like many bullies, only respects people who do.” The comments were attributed to Altman in a Vanity Fair interview that Digit encountered via Business Insider. The full interview was not available in Digit’s account, so the wording here is limited to the quotations it reproduced. Digit’s report

The phrase is presented as rhetoric about responding to a perceived bully, not as an instruction to use physical force. Altman’s explanation was that pushing back can be necessary in dealing with Musk.

Why did Altman say it?

The remark comes amid a relationship that has shifted from collaboration to public conflict. Altman and Musk were once allies and helped start OpenAI, according to Digit. Their relationship later broke down, leading to public disputes and legal battles. Digit does not detail the claims or procedural status of those matters.

Digit also recounted a July social-media exchange, without specifying the year in the displayed account. Musk replied to an accusation against Altman, “He takes scamming to a whole new level”; Altman later mocked Musk’s support for orbital data centers. The exchange illustrates the public hostility surrounding the interview remark, but does not establish the full history or substance of their disagreements.

Altman said he would still work with Musk

Altman paired his criticism with a willingness to cooperate. As quoted by Digit, he said: “If you want me to be able to work with him, maybe you should be happy I hit back once in a while, but I will work with Elon, of course.” He connected that possibility to the need to work together as the AI industry faces safety concerns.

That makes his position more complicated than a simple refusal to engage: Altman says he is willing to work with Musk while arguing that cooperation does not require him to stay silent when he believes Musk is acting like a bully.

Altman’s response to blame

Altman also acknowledged that he is not beyond criticism. Digit quoted him saying, “I won’t call myself a saint,” followed by: “I’m not sure if I’m the one that you’re supposed to come after between Elon and me.” He conceded imperfection while disputing that he should be treated as the principal person to blame in the conflict.

What the report establishes—and what it does not

  • Established by Digit’s account: Altman used the quoted language about punching back, described Musk as a bully, and said he would work with him.
  • Context provided: the two were former collaborators at OpenAI whose relationship later deteriorated into public conflict and legal battles.
  • Not established in the account: the full interview context, the detailed claims in the legal disputes, or the year of the July social-media exchange.

Because Digit is the available source for the interview quotations and does not reproduce a full transcript, the quotes should be understood as reported by Digit rather than independently verified against the original interview.
