A DHCP list records address allocations; a scan reports devices that answered particular discovery probes from a particular network location. Neither view, by itself, is a guaranteed live inventory of every connected device. An unfamiliar result is a reason to identify it—not proof of an intruder.
What each view is actually showing
| What to compare | Router interface | Network scan |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence | May show DHCP leases, active wireless stations, ARP entries, or a combined network map. Check the page’s name and fields. | Shows responses to probes and local-link discovery, depending on the scanning tool and its options. |
| Timing | May include stored lease or router information; refresh behavior varies by model. | Usually reflects responses during the scan window. |
| Network position | May draw on records from the router’s own services or interfaces. | The scanning device’s subnet, routes, isolation, and probe type affect what it can see. |
| IP version | Support and presentation vary by router. | Nmap documents IPv4 ARP and IPv6 Neighbor Discovery for local Ethernet discovery. |
| Identity | A client name and MAC address are useful clues, not proof of who owns the device. | A response shows reachability by that method, not the device’s owner. |
A router page may be a lease list, not a live roster
Router interfaces use labels such as “connected devices” for different underlying records. A DHCP client list, an active Wi-Fi station list, an ARP table, and a combined network map are not interchangeable. For example, the TP-Link TL-WR902AC V3 guide describes a DHCP Client List containing client name, MAC address, assigned IP address, and lease time. That is a model-specific example, not a definition for every router.

A DHCP lease records an address allocation. Depending on the router and its interface, an entry may remain visible even when the device is not actively sending traffic at the moment you check. Look for the page type and any lease or connection-status fields rather than assuming every row represents a currently active connection.
A scan reports responses to its discovery method
A network scan is not an all-purpose census. Nmap’s host-discovery documentation describes ICMP, TCP, UDP, ARP, and IPv6 Neighbor Discovery techniques. Which devices appear depends on the probes used, the scanner’s privileges and options, and whether devices or network equipment filter probes or replies. A firewall that drops the relevant traffic can make a reachable device go unreported.

Why one view can find a device the other misses
The scan runs from a different network segment
Local-link discovery works within the local network segment. A scan launched from guest Wi-Fi, an isolated wireless network, another VLAN, or a routed subnet may not have the same visibility as a device on the main LAN. Whether those networks are isolated depends on the router and configuration; it is not safe to assume that every guest network behaves the same way.
On local Ethernet, Nmap normally uses ARP for IPv4 or Neighbor Discovery for IPv6. Its host-discovery guide notes that local ARP scanning is performed unless options such as --disable-arp-ping or --send-ip change that behavior. ARP can help find hosts on the local link, but it does not discover hosts across routed boundaries. Nmap also explains that hosts may block IP-based ping while still communicating locally over Ethernet; that does not mean ARP can cross a router or find every host.

The scan and router page cover different IP versions
An IPv4-only scan does not provide a complete IPv6 inventory. Nmap documents IPv6 Neighbor Discovery for local Ethernet hosts, while IETF RFC 9099 discusses the operational challenges of IPv6 inventory and the value of combining evidence such as traffic records, DNS, logs, and service discovery. Check whether the scanner and router page actually include the IP version you are investigating.
The router and scanner use different records or probes
A router’s DHCP list reflects allocations, while a scanner reflects probe responses. Other discovery designs combine sources too: Microsoft’s Configuration Manager documentation, for example, describes querying router ARP caches and DHCP servers, then sending ICMP echo requests to devices found. That enterprise example illustrates why different tools can produce different inventories; it does not establish how a consumer router builds its own list.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
A name or manufacturer label is not identification
Hostnames and vendor labels depend on the information available to the router or scanning tool. A familiar-looking name does not establish ownership, and an unfamiliar one does not establish that a device is unauthorized. Compare the IP address, MAC address when available, timing, and known device activity before drawing conclusions.
How to compare the two results
- Identify the router page. Note its exact name and fields. Determine whether it is a DHCP client list, a live Wi-Fi station list, an ARP table, or another view. Record lease or connection status if shown.
- Run the scan from the network you mean to check. Use a device on the same LAN or Wi-Fi segment, and note whether it is on guest Wi-Fi or a separate VLAN. Local ARP or Neighbor Discovery applies to local-link discovery.
- Capture both views close together in time. Compare IP and MAC addresses where available, along with lease or connection status. A lease record and a probe response do not necessarily describe activity at the same instant.
- Check scan method and IP version. If an expected device is missing, find out whether local ARP or Neighbor Discovery was used, whether probes or replies could be filtered, and whether the scan covered IPv6 as well as IPv4.
- Identify an unfamiliar result before taking action. Check the device’s own network settings and compare them with household devices and router records. If it remains unknown, consult the router maker’s model-specific instructions for blocking a device or changing Wi-Fi credentials; steps differ across models.
What an apparent mismatch does—and does not—tell you
If the router lists a device that a scan misses, the entry may be a lease or another stored record, or the scan may not have used a method that elicited a response. If a scan finds an address absent from the router’s list, the router page may not display the record or type of discovery that surfaced it. In either direction, the mismatch identifies a question about visibility and identity; it does not, on its own, diagnose unauthorized access.
