A public profile can also reveal information you choose to share, social links, contribution activity, and pinned work. GitHub documents what its private-profile setting hides—and what it does not. These details can provide context about an account, but the cited documentation does not show that a follower count alone enables an account compromise.
What can people see on a public GitHub profile?
GitHub describes a profile as a place to showcase work, contributions, and information you choose to share. Depending on what you add and your settings, a profile may show a README, personal details, contribution activity, pinned items, status, achievements, and badges. GitHub says details added to a public profile are visible to all GitHub users, including people in regions where sharing identity information may pose risks. GitHub’s profile overview explains the available elements.

Follower and following counts
GitHub’s instructions for following people direct visitors to the “followers” link beneath a user’s profile picture. GitHub also lists follower and following counts among the information hidden by a private profile. So the counts can be visible when the relevant public profile content is enabled; the number itself does not establish who is behind an account or how secure it is.
Social links and personal details
Links to social accounts are visible to anyone who can view the profile, according to GitHub’s profile reference. Optional personal details and links may help someone connect a GitHub identity with other accounts. Treat them as identity clues worth reviewing, not proof that anyone will correlate them or use them to compromise your account.

What does making a GitHub profile private hide?
GitHub says a private profile hides follower and following counts, the contribution graph, activity overview and feed, organization memberships, and several other profile or social sections. The README, bio, and profile picture can remain publicly visible. The feature became generally available on September 29, 2022, as GitHub announced.
To enable it, open your profile settings and select the option to make your profile private. GitHub’s current profile documentation describes the setting and the sections it affects; check the page for the current control label and location, which may change.

Does a private profile hide public repository activity?
No. Profile privacy does not erase or hide past activity. Activity on public repositories remains visible to people viewing those repositories, and some activity data may still be available through the GitHub API, according to the profile reference. Profile-level settings and repository visibility are separate: review your public repositories and their activity on their own, rather than assuming a private profile makes them private.

- Review your profile as a visitor would. Check your README, bio, profile picture, personal details, pinned items, status, badges, and social links. Remove details or links you do not want broadly visible.
- Choose profile visibility deliberately. If you do not want profile-level counts and activity sections shown, enable the private-profile setting and confirm which elements GitHub says remain visible.
- Audit public repositories separately. Review the projects and activity that remain publicly accessible. A private profile does not change their visibility.
- Protect account access separately from profile information. GitHub’s enterprise user-security guidance recommends enabling two-factor authentication and using a password manager on computers used to connect to the enterprise. Those are account-access protections; they do not change what profile visitors can see. See GitHub’s user-security guidance.
Visibility is not the same as vulnerability
A follower count, contribution history, or social link can make information easier to discover, but GitHub’s cited documentation does not establish that any of these details alone creates an account vulnerability. Manage profile visibility to limit what you disclose, review public repositories for what they expose, and use account protections to secure sign-in. These are different controls for different risks.
