Simply overwriting the output can erase those edits; avoiding regeneration afterward can leave generated code stale and force teams to maintain it by hand. Jostraca is a framework for building generators that can handle an existing, edited output tree using different policies for different files.
What changes on the second run?
The first run writes files into an output tree. The second run happens after someone has changed that tree and the generator is run again—for example, after an API changes or a shared template is updated. At that point, the generator must distinguish between files it owns and edits developers expect to keep.

A naïve overwrite replaces the existing output with newly generated content, potentially clobbering manual work. If that makes regeneration feel unsafe, a team may stop running the generator and instead maintain the output by hand. Shiv Rai, author of the Jostraca article, describes that risk this way: “The second run, over a tree somebody has edited, is where they clobber work, and where teams stop regenerating and start hand-maintaining.” This is his framing of the problem, not a measured industry statistic.
When is a second-run strategy useful?
- SDKs that track changing APIs: regeneration can bring generated files into line with API changes, while a policy for edited files helps avoid indiscriminate overwrites.
- Evolving internal templates: teams can update shared boilerplate without treating every existing output file as disposable.
- Generated code developers customize: a generator can keep generated portions current while protecting or surfacing user-owned changes.
- Shared project scaffolds that are regenerated: policies can account for files with different ownership and review needs.
The key question is not whether generated files can ever be edited. It is whether regeneration is an ongoing product feature and, if so, what should happen to edits when generated content changes.

How Jostraca handles existing output
Jostraca is described as a framework for creating generators, rather than a layer placed over an existing generator. Its workflow defines an output tree and then applies a build phase, so the generator can know which files are planned before writing them. The project describes five modes for dealing with files that already exist:
write: write the newly generated file.preserve: keep the prior version rather than replacing it.present: offer the generated version as an alternative for consideration.diff: write a diff so changes can be reviewed.merge: perform a three-way merge against the last generation.
It also describes protected regions that the generator does not modify. These policies can vary by file within one output tree: fully generated files can be rewritten, user-owned regions protected, and mixed files merged or surfaced for review. In the author’s example, a tree includes a fully generated file, a file with user-written and generated regions, a protected notes file, a merged HTML file, a preserved previous version, and a diff for review. These are described examples, not independent test results.

Choose a policy based on file ownership and review needs
There is no single safest behavior for every file. The useful distinction is how much of a file belongs to the generator and whether changes should flow through automatically or be reviewed by a person.
- Generator-owned file, unattended synchronization: rewriting may be appropriate when manual edits are not expected to survive.
- User-owned file: preserving it avoids replacing content the generator should not control.
- Generated proposal needing review: presenting the new version or writing a diff makes changes visible without silently imposing them.
- Mixed generated and user content: protected regions or a merge strategy can account for both, though merges still need an appropriate conflict-handling process.
Applying different policies across the tree is the point: a generated SDK file, a developer’s notes, and a mixed template need not be treated alike.

When a simpler scaffold is enough
If a generator runs once and its output is not expected to be regenerated, second-run policies may add complexity without solving a real problem. The Jostraca article says a simpler scaffolding approach can be sufficient in that case. This does not make regeneration-aware behavior a universal replacement for scaffolding tools; it makes it relevant when ongoing synchronization and preservation of edits are part of the intended workflow.
