Its associated standard, IEEE 802.11bn, sets targets for latency and packet loss as well as throughput. Those are standards goals—not a guarantee that every Wi-Fi 8 device will lower your ping, and not proof of better gaming performance in real-world tests.
What Wi-Fi 8 is designed to improve
Wi-Fi 8 is the consumer-facing name associated with IEEE 802.11bn, an active IEEE amendment project focused on Ultra High Reliability (UHR). The IEEE describes the project as specifying enhancements for UHR capability in wireless local area networks. These are capability targets for at least one mode under specified comparisons. They do not mean every Wi-Fi 8 router will deliver 25% more speed, reduce every player’s latency by 25%, or achieve that packet-loss reduction in every home. The conditions and the comparison baseline matter.

Why those targets could matter in a game
Online games are sensitive to delayed or missing network packets, and players often notice inconsistent timing more than a high peak link-rate figure. If a Wi-Fi 8 implementation achieves its reliability capabilities in the radio conditions affecting a player, it could help reduce interruptions or latency spikes. That is a plausible connection between the standard’s goals and gaming—not a Wi-Fi 8 gaming result established by the IEEE project description.
The potential benefit is most relevant when the wireless link itself is part of the problem: for example, when the network is congested, interference is present, coverage is weak, or a device is moving between access points. Qualcomm describes congestion, interference, mobility, and coverage-edge conditions as areas addressed by reliability work; that is the vendor’s characterization of the technology, not an independent gaming test. A more reliable Wi-Fi link cannot improve a game server, change the route taken through your internet provider, or repair an inadequate broadband connection. It also cannot guarantee a lower baseline ping: that depends on more than the wireless connection between your device and access point.

It may improve latency consistency in situations where wireless conditions contribute to delays or packet loss, but the available standards targets do not establish a universal reduction in ping. In particular, the 25% figure applies to 95th-percentile latency in at least one mode relative to EHT MAC/PHY operation—not to every player’s typical ping or every game.

No Wi-Fi 8-specific game-ping measurements or retail-device gaming tests are established by the cited sources. Until real products and independent tests are available, claims about a particular game’s ping, lag, or match performance should be treated as unverified.
When can you buy Wi-Fi 8?
As of October 2026, IEEE P802.11bn remains an active project, rather than a completed standard. Qualcomm projects final IEEE approval in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification in January 2028. The cited sources do not establish a currently available retail Wi-Fi 8 router or other consumer Wi-Fi 8 product. Certification timing is not the same as a confirmed date when a specific product will be on sale.

Will existing Wi-Fi devices work with Wi-Fi 8?
IEEE says the amendment applies to carrier frequencies from 1 GHz to 7.250 GHz and provides backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz unlicensed bands. That means support for coexistence with older Wi-Fi devices; it does not give a legacy phone, console, or computer Wi-Fi 8 capabilities. To use new features, compatible client and network equipment will be needed.

What to check when Wi-Fi 8 products arrive
For gaming, look beyond a router’s advertised peak rate. A useful evaluation should distinguish link speed from connection consistency and test conditions from guarantees.
