Recall is a personal search tool designed to help you find saved material by describing what you remember, rather than knowing its filename or exact wording. Its creator, Soham Maity, describes it as a local-first system for searching text, webpages, screenshots, images, PDFs, and other files. For example, a search for “the screenshot where GitHub could not resolve the host” is meant to find an image about a GitHub DNS problem.
What Recall is for
Recall addresses the gap between saving useful material and finding it again. A saved screenshot may have an unhelpful filename; a note or article may be easier to recall by its subject than by its exact title. The project’s aim is to let a user search using that remembered context. Maity sums up the motivation: “The problem was not storing those things. It was finding them again.”

The described inputs include text, webpages, images, screenshots, PDFs, and other files. For images, Recall uses optical character recognition (OCR) and image captioning to make text and visual content available to search. Example queries include “that screenshot about the GitHub DNS problem” and “the article about FAISS.” These are illustrations of the intended interaction, not published accuracy results.
How Recall combines exact and meaning-based search
According to Maity’s project description, Recall prepares material when it is ingested: it extracts content and metadata, applies OCR or image captioning where relevant, creates embeddings, and stores data in SQLite. Search then combines two kinds of retrieval rather than depending on either exact words or semantic similarity alone.

This design is intended to handle both a remembered idea and a precise string: a natural-language description can point toward a related item, while an error message or identifier can benefit from literal matching. Maity says ingestion-time processing also means ordinary retrieval need not run a generative AI model in the background. Those are descriptions of the design and its rationale, not independent tests of search quality or speed.
What “local-first” means here—and what remains unverified
Maity says files and search data stay on the user’s machine, no account or cloud API is required, and open models can run image captioning, OCR, and embedding generation locally. If implemented as described, this avoids sending saved material to a remote embedding API as part of the ordinary workflow. The available project description is a first-party claim, however; it does not independently audit network traffic, data handling, or security. Local processing should not be treated as a security guarantee.

The project names Google’s EmbeddingGemma 300M as its default embedding model, with all-MiniLM-L6-v2 and deterministic hash vectors as fallbacks. BLIP-base is named for image captioning and RapidOCR for OCR. The described application stack also includes Python and FastAPI, SQLite, FAISS, and a React/Vite frontend. These are implementation details reported by the builder and may change as the project evolves.

The builder says Recall is intended to run on a normal laptop and does not require a dedicated GPU. The description does not specify supported operating systems, minimum memory or storage, measured search latency, or performance on a particular collection size, so it is not possible to infer a concrete hardware requirement or expected speed from that claim.

The operational design treats the database as the source of truth and says the FAISS index can be rebuilt. It also uses content hashes to avoid duplicate processing and is designed so optional AI-model failures do not stop ingestion. These choices describe resilience mechanisms, but they do not establish how well recovery works in practice or what export and backup options are available to users.

Recall’s approach may fit someone who saves a varied personal archive and often remembers the context of an item better than its name. Its combination of lexical and vector retrieval is particularly relevant when searches alternate between natural descriptions and exact terms such as an error string. It may be less suitable for anyone who needs independently verified privacy guarantees, documented operating-system support, published performance measurements, or a clearly specified backup and export workflow; those details are not established by the available project description.

When evaluating any personal search tool, check the file types it can ingest, where processing and indexes are stored, whether an account or remote API is required, how it handles exact-text versus semantic queries, its model and hardware requirements, and whether its data can be exported or its indexes rebuilt. These are useful questions to ask about Recall as well; they are not evidence of a comparison with another product.
