Start by looking at the group, not by moving the sight. A tight group in the wrong place usually calls for checking aim, conditions and sight settings; arrows scattered in different directions call for checking shot repeatability and equipment consistency first. One arrow cannot identify the cause. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time.
Read the pattern before changing anything
Note where several arrows land in an end and whether they form a reasonably tight group. Record the aiming point, distance, handedness, and any noticeable wind or other conditions. A group that shifts as the wind changes does not, by itself, establish a permanent sight problem. A scattered group is a reason to observe your shot and inspect the setup before making sight corrections.

- Tight but off-center: Check whether you held the same aiming point and whether the group changed with conditions. Once the shot is repeatable, a sight adjustment may be appropriate.
- Scattered: Look first at consistency of aim, release and follow-through, then check that arrows and bow components are in sound, consistent condition.
- One outlier: Do not use a single arrow to diagnose spine, nocking-point position or sight alignment.
Check aim, release and follow-through
A recurve shot involves raising the bow, drawing to the face, aiming, releasing and maintaining follow-through. If the bow moves or the aiming point is lost as the string is released, arrows can scatter even when the sight setting has not changed. World Archery’s common-mistakes feature quotes London 2012 Olympic Champion Ki Bo Bae: “Many archers think about the line of the circle – but they must only focus on the centre sight pin and where it is on the target.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsObserve whether you keep the pin on the intended point through release and continue the shot rather than dropping the bow immediately. World Archery’s recurve equipment explainer says a deviation of 1 millimetre in arrow angle at release can result in an impact 20 or more centimetres away from the intended point at 70 metres. That is World Archery’s illustrative figure, not a universal prediction for every bow or archer; it underscores why small execution differences can matter.

If you use a clicker, do not treat its sound as the end of the shot. World Archery quotes Dutch archer Sjef van den Berg: “The clicker is not the end of the shot but the beginning.” Focus on a repeatable sequence before trying to fix inconsistent impacts with equipment changes.
Account for wind and other conditions
Wind can move arrows across the target face, and noise or weather can distract an archer. If the group changes with the conditions, note that alongside the impacts instead of immediately altering the sight. World Archery quotes Colombian archer Ana Maria Rendon: “You always fight with the wind – but you don’t have to fight, just understand it and shoot,” and discusses control and repeatable movement as part of recurve shooting in its common-mistakes feature.

Inspect arrows, then verify spine
Before tuning, check that the shafts are straight, the fletching is sound and the nocks are aligned. These are among the basic arrow checks in World Archery’s Level 2 coaching manual. Damaged or inconsistent arrows can make group patterns harder to interpret.

Choose it using the arrow maker’s current chart for the specific shaft, based on the bow weight you actually pull at your achieved draw length—not simply the marked or nominal weight of the limbs. World Archery’s beginner equipment guide explains the importance of draw weight at the archer’s draw length, while its coaching manual treats manufacturer charts as a starting point and tuning as a way to reveal a mismatch. Charts differ by manufacturer and model, so there is no one spine number that suits every recurve archer.

Do not conclude that a left- or right-side impact proves a particular spine fault. Bare-shaft impact is interpreted in relation to fletched arrows and the archer’s handedness, and the rest of the setup matters. If you do not know your actual draw weight or draw length, ask a coach or experienced technician to help measure them before selecting arrows.
Check the nocking point and bow setup
The nocking point sets where the arrow sits on the string. World Archery’s nocking-point guide gives about 5 mm above the arrow-rest line as a starting position, not a universal final setting. The finished position needs tuning for the archer and bow. Leave enough space between upper and lower nocking points that they do not pinch the arrow.

A recurve setup also uses an arrow rest and commonly a pressure button, or cushion plunger. The button is a spring-loaded component that helps the arrow leave the bow cleanly and counters horizontal oscillation associated with the fingers leaving the string. Archery GB explains its tuning role in its pressure-button guide. These components can affect arrow flight, but replacing one will not make an inconsistent aim or release repeatable.
Use a bare-shaft test as a tuning clue
A bare-shaft test compares unfletched arrows with fletched arrows shot at the same aiming point. Because unfletched arrows receive less stabilizing effect from fletching, their impact can help expose setup issues. It is a tuning method, not a stand-alone verdict about the cause of every miss.

- Start close enough that all arrows can reliably land on the target. World Archery’s Level 2 coaching manual suggests 5 m as a starting distance.
- Shoot fletched and unfletched arrows with the same aim and compare their impacts.
- Do not move farther away until bare shafts reliably hit the target.
- Interpret displacement relative to your handedness and the rest of the setup. Use the result to guide tuning of the nocking point or cushion plunger rather than making several changes at once.
The manual notes that bare shafts can land outside the fletched group even when the overall group is good. If you are new to tuning, ask a club coach or qualified shop to interpret the pattern before making adjustments. A Recurve Bow Tuning workshop description from Archery GB covers setup, tuning, clearance and alignment, including distinguishing equipment problems from technique.
Make controlled adjustments and retest
Keep a short record of the group, distance, aiming point, conditions and any adjustment. Change one setting at a time, then shoot another group under comparable conditions. Otherwise, you may not know which change affected the result. For equipment advice, World Archery recommends seeking guidance from club members and coaches when buying gear in its beginner equipment guide.
For arrow selection, compare the maker’s correct spine for your measured draw length and actual bow weight, along with shaft material, durability and component compatibility. Without those measurements and the current chart for a particular shaft, recommending a specific spine or brand would be guesswork.
