If a React or Next.js page starts showing ChunkLoadError just after a deployment, first inspect the failed JavaScript request in your browser’s Network panel. A common deployment-related possibility is that the page or runtime came from one build while the requested chunk is missing, stale, or served by an incompatible deployment. The error name alone does not prove that is what happened; the failed request’s URL, status, response, and serving host are the evidence needed to diagnose it.
Why am I getting a ChunkLoadError after deploying my Next.js app?
A chunk is a JavaScript file that the browser loads as part of an application. After a release, a browser may still have a document or runtime from the previous build and then request a file that the new deployment no longer serves. A similar mismatch can happen during a rolling release if requests reach instances serving incompatible build artifacts. In either case, the page and the requested chunk may not belong to the same deployment.

That is a diagnostic hypothesis, not a universal explanation. ChunkLoadError can describe different loading failures, and the Next.js deployment guidance addresses version skew and asset caching rather than defining every bundler-specific cause. Start with the failed request instead of assuming the release is at fault.
How do I find the cause?
- Open your browser’s developer tools, select Network, and reproduce the failure.
- Select the failed JavaScript request and record its full URL, HTTP status, response body or preview, content type, timing, and the host or deployment that answered it.
- Compare the failed URL and response with the page or navigation that led to it. Check whether they came from the same release and whether the requested file exists in that release’s deployed assets.
Interpret the result rather than treating any one status as conclusive. A 404 suggests checking whether the requested chunk is present at that path and whether the page is requesting an asset from an older build. An HTML error page or other non-JavaScript response suggests checking routing, CDN or reverse-proxy behavior, and which host handled the request. If repeated requests go to different instances, compare the build artifacts and responses each instance serves.

How do I fix ChunkLoadError after deployment?
Make sure the page and chunk belong to a compatible release
For a Next.js app using rolling deployments, configure a unique deploymentId for each deployment, and use the same ID across instances that belong to that deployment. Next.js documents this option for version-skew protection and cache busting during rolling deployments. It adds the ID as a query parameter to static asset URLs and uses response headers to detect a mismatch; when client and server deployment IDs do not match, Next.js triggers a hard navigation. See the Next.js deploymentId documentation.
A deployment ID helps Next.js identify mismatched versions; it does not make a missing chunk available or repair every possible loading failure. Verify that the ID is set consistently for instances in the same release and that the requested asset is actually served.

Check chunk availability and caching
Confirm that the exact chunk path in the failed request exists in the active deployment and that the CDN or reverse proxy returns the expected JavaScript rather than stale HTML, an error page, or an asset from an incompatible release. Next.js says truly immutable static assets receive Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable. That long-lived policy is for immutable, correctly versioned assets—not a reason to serve stale HTML or route a request to an incompatible build. Review the Next.js self-hosting guide for caching and proxy considerations. The Next.js 13 production checklist also documents static-asset caching; check the guidance for the version your app actually deploys.

In a multi-instance deployment, make sure all instances for one deployment serve compatible build artifacts and use the same deployment ID. Next.js also advises coordinating shared cache and cache-tag state where applicable, because isolated per-instance caches can diverge. Review the self-hosting guidance alongside your platform’s routing and cache configuration. For platform-specific deployment behavior, see Next.js deployment platform guidance.

Confirm the deployment mode supports your app
Next.js documents that Node.js server and Docker deployments support all Next.js features, while static export has limited feature support and adapter support varies. If the app relies on a feature unavailable in its deployment mode, investigate that mismatch rather than treating every failed chunk as a cache problem. See Next.js deployment options.
What should React apps outside Next.js check?
Next.js’s deploymentId behavior is not a generic React setting. For a React app built with another toolchain, inspect the failed request and verify that the bundler’s public path or base URL, emitted chunk files, deployment routing, and CDN behavior agree. The right configuration depends on the actual build tool and hosting setup; the Next.js recommendations above should not be applied blindly.

When is a hard refresh useful?
If the evidence indicates that the browser is holding an old document or client runtime, a hard refresh can temporarily make it load the current page and assets. Use that only as a diagnostic or user workaround. It will not fix a server that still lacks the requested chunk, a CDN returning the wrong response, or traffic split across incompatible releases. Correct the deployment, asset availability, or routing issue indicated by the failed request.
