A Mac mini can power a compact desk setup, but it needs an external display for a conventional desktop workspace. Connect a monitor, projector or TV to one of the Mac mini’s rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video ports, then add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. If you already own a MacBook, you can share its keyboard and pointer with the mini using Universal Control—but the MacBook’s built-in screen does not become the mini’s monitor through an ordinary cable.
What you need for a Mac mini desk setup
- A display: a monitor, projector or high-resolution TV connected to the Mac mini. Apple says the rear HDMI and Thunderbolt/USB-C ports support video output; the front USB 3 ports do not. Apple’s Mac mini display guide
- A matching cable or adapter: choose one that connects a rear video port on the mini to an input on the display. If the connectors differ, use a compatible adapter and confirm it supports the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Apple’s adapter guide
- Input devices: a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. Connect them directly, or use Universal Control to share input with a nearby MacBook while keeping the two computers’ screens separate.

Check the Mac mini model first
Display limits depend on the exact Mac mini model, the port used and how many displays are connected. Apple’s current specifications list support for up to three external displays for both M6 and M5 Pro configurations, but supported resolution and refresh rate vary by configuration. Match the cable to the display input
Look at the available inputs on your display and choose a cable that matches one of the mini’s rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video outputs. For example, a display with HDMI input can connect by HDMI; a USB-C-to-HDMI cable is another possible route when its specifications support the display mode you need. For a display with a different input, select the appropriate compatible cable or adapter rather than assuming every USB-C adapter supports every resolution or refresh rate.

- Identify the model. Find your Mac mini model and check its supported display configurations in Apple’s technical specifications.
- Connect the display. Use a rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video port and a cable that matches the display’s input. Add a compatible adapter if needed.
- Power on the display and mini. Select the display’s correct input if it does not show the Mac’s picture automatically.
- Adjust display settings. On the Mac mini, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays to set options such as resolution, refresh rate where available, arrangement, and mirroring or extension. The choices shown depend on the connected display and Mac model. Apple’s display guide
- Connect your keyboard and pointing device. Pair or plug them into the mini, or configure Universal Control if you want to use a nearby MacBook’s keyboard and pointer across both computers.
Can you use a MacBook as the Mac mini’s monitor?
Do not expect to connect a MacBook to the mini with an ordinary USB-C or HDMI cable and use the MacBook’s built-in screen as a standard external monitor. That is different from controlling two Macs with shared input. A MacBook can remain a separate computer with its own screen while a single keyboard, mouse or trackpad moves between it and the mini through Universal Control. If your goal is to view or control the mini’s desktop from the MacBook, that is a remote screen-sharing workflow, not a direct monitor connection.

When a laptop-style setup makes sense
A Mac mini suits a laptop-style desk when you want a stationary computer but still need the compact footprint and flexible workspace of a desk setup. You can use a separate monitor and peripherals, or keep a MacBook nearby and share input with Universal Control. If avoiding a separate display is essential, do not count on a MacBook’s built-in screen acting as the mini’s wired monitor.
