AI-built websites are not automatically penalized or held back in Google Search. When one struggles to rank, the cause is more likely to be a familiar SEO or implementation issue: Google cannot discover the page, cannot access or render its important content, or finds that the content offers too little distinct value. Check what Google can see before rebuilding the site.
Does Google penalize AI-built websites?
There is no evidence in Google’s published guidance that a site ranks poorly simply because someone built it with AI tools. Google’s guidance focuses on whether pages are useful, accurate, relevant, and accessible to Search. It warns that generating pages at scale without adding value can violate its policies, but that concern is about the content and its purpose—not the tool used to produce it.

Google’s official documentation explains how crawling, rendering, indexing, and content quality affect sites generally. It does not provide a controlled comparison or statistic showing that AI-built websites rank worse than conventionally built ones. Treat “vibe coded” as a description of how a site was made, not as a diagnosis of why it is underperforming. See Google’s guidance on generative AI content and its advice on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.
How Google handles JavaScript-built pages
Many AI website builders create pages that rely on JavaScript. Google can process JavaScript, but the page still has to make its important content and links available to Googlebot.
#1 Best Overall
- Crawling: Googlebot fetches a URL and parses its HTML, including links it can follow.
- Rendering: If the page is eligible, Google may place it in a rendering queue. A headless Chromium browser then renders the page and runs its JavaScript.
- Indexing: Google can use the rendered HTML to understand and index the page and discover additional links.
This means content missing from the initial HTML may depend on successful rendering before Google can process it. Rendering can be queued, so a delay is not, by itself, proof that a page will never be indexed. Google’s JavaScript SEO basics explains the process and its limitations. Google also notes that other search engines may choose not to run JavaScript.
When rendering becomes a real concern
Look for a problem if the rendered version Google sees is missing the page’s main text, navigation links, or other important elements—or if JavaScript errors or blocked resources prevent the page from rendering correctly. Google recommends server-side rendering, static rendering, or hydration as solutions for relevant JavaScript content issues. These approaches can also improve speed for users and crawlers. Dynamic rendering adds complexity and is described by Google as a workaround, not a long-term solution: Google’s dynamic-rendering guidance.

Why an AI-built site may struggle to rank
Google cannot discover important pages
A page that is not linked from other crawlable pages can be difficult to find. This can happen in any site, including a generated single-page application whose different screens do not have distinct URLs. Give important pages their own URLs, link to them with crawlable links, and provide a sitemap to help Google discover them. Google’s SEO guide for web developers covers these foundations.

A builder may place key copy in an image, canvas, or decorative CSS element, or depend on scripts that fail to load. Search engines need accessible page content; make the main text available as text in the document structure and use semantic HTML where practical. Inspect the rendered page rather than assuming that what appears in your browser is also available to Google.

Pages lack distinct value
AI can help draft or assemble a page, but generic output does not become useful simply because it is published on a website. Pages that repeat the same material, offer little original information, or do not meet a reader’s needs may fail to earn visibility. Google says that extensive automation producing pages without added value may fall under its scaled content abuse policy. Review its generative AI content guidance and people-first content guidance.
Page signals are missing or inconsistent
Each important page should have a descriptive, distinct title and a useful meta description. If several URLs serve the same content, use canonical URLs consistently. Validate structured data if you use it; it can help Google understand eligible content, but it does not guarantee a particular search appearance or ranking. Google’s JavaScript SEO documentation covers metadata, canonicals, caching, and structured data. Googlebot caching can also make outdated JavaScript or CSS relevant; content fingerprinting is one documented way to identify changed assets.

The page experience gets in the way
A site may be technically accessible yet still be difficult to use. Check that the page loads reliably, its main content is easy to find, and navigation works on the devices your audience uses. Technical clarity and foundational SEO remain relevant to Google Search’s generative AI features as well; Google does not guarantee that an indexed page will be served in Search. See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Google Search.
How to diagnose an AI website that is not ranking
- Inspect a specific URL. In Google Search Console, open URL Inspection and check the page’s rendered result. You can also use Google’s Rich Results Test. Review the rendered DOM, loaded resources, JavaScript console output, and exceptions, then compare the result with what a visitor sees. Google’s JavaScript troubleshooting guide describes these checks. They help diagnose problems; they do not guarantee rankings.
- Check access and discovery. Confirm important pages are not inadvertently blocked and that Google can reach them through crawlable links. Make sure each important screen or content item has its own URL, and provide a sitemap to support discovery.
- Verify the main content is available as text. Check that the rendered document contains the page’s key information, rather than relying exclusively on text embedded in images, canvas, or decorative CSS.
- Review page-specific signals. Confirm titles and meta descriptions describe each page, canonical URLs are consistent, and any structured data is valid. If the rendered page appears to use old assets, check whether JavaScript or CSS caching is involved.
- Evaluate the content against the reader’s need. Ask what useful information, experience, or analysis the page contributes beyond what is already available. Edit or remove thin, repetitive pages instead of simply producing more of them.
- Change the rendering approach only if the diagnosis supports it. If important public content is not reliably available to crawlers, discuss static or server-side rendering with the development team. The fact that AI generated the site is not, by itself, a reason to migrate frameworks.
When should you change the site’s rendering approach?
Compare implementation options by what they deliver, not by whether a builder labels them “AI,” “modern,” or “SEO-ready.” Google’s guidance does not prescribe a single framework for every site. The relevant questions are whether important content is present in the initial HTML or reliably rendered, URLs and links are crawlable, the page is fast and usable, and the approach is maintainable.
Best Value
| Approach | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Client-side rendering | Important content may depend on Google’s rendering process. Confirm that scripts and resources load and that the rendered page includes the content and links. |
| Static or server-side rendering | Can make important content available in the HTML served to crawlers and users. Consider whether the development team can implement and maintain it appropriately. |
| Dynamic rendering | Google describes this as a workaround that adds complexity, rather than a preferred long-term solution for JavaScript-generated content issues. |
For implementation details, consult Google’s JavaScript SEO basics and dynamic-rendering documentation.
Does an AI-built website rank on Google?
Yes. The way a site was built does not, on its own, prevent it from ranking. Its pages still need to be discoverable, accessible to Google’s crawlers, technically understandable, and useful to readers. Google’s documentation on SEO and generative AI features makes clear that following technical practices does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or served.
How do I get my AI website indexed?
Start with the specific pages you want Google to find: make sure they are accessible, link to them through crawlable navigation, include them in a sitemap, and verify that their main content appears in the rendered page. Use Search Console URL Inspection to check a page’s status and rendered result. Indexing requests and sound implementation can help Google process pages, but neither guarantees indexing or ranking.
