Usually because its HTML is an initial snapshot—created at build time or on the server—and the page either receives old data or does not correctly update its client-side state. Prerendering itself does not prevent a calculator from working. The fix is to identify when the value becomes stale, keep the server and first browser render consistent, and derive interactive results from current input state.
Why a pre-rendered calculator can show an old result
Prerendering produces HTML before a user interacts with the page. In Next.js Pages Router, static generation creates that HTML at build time and can reuse it; server-side rendering instead generates HTML for each request. React’s static prerender API also emits initial, non-interactive HTML. In the browser, React hydrates that HTML by attaching event handlers and making it interactive. See Next.js Pages Router rendering, React’s prerender API, and Next.js Server and Client Components.

That lifecycle creates two distinct problems that can look alike: the initial HTML may contain an old value, or the server-rendered HTML may differ from the browser’s first render. A third possibility is that the displayed result is not connected to the current input state, so it changes only after a later interaction.

- Inspect the initial HTML. View the page with JavaScript disabled or inspect its raw HTML. If the old result is already there, look at when the data was produced: build-time generation, the page’s static-generation logic, or a framework/CDN route cache.
- Compare the first browser render. If the HTML has the expected value but the page changes or shows a hydration warning as JavaScript starts, compare the server-rendered output with the browser’s first render. React expects them to agree.
- Test the input-to-result update. If the result changes only after an input event, check whether the input is controlled by React state, whether its change handler updates that state, and whether the result is calculated from the current state.
This sequence follows the documented rendering lifecycle; without the application code, it cannot identify which cause applies to a particular calculator. Next.js describes the requirement as: “Ensure that the component renders the same content server-side as it does during the initial client-side render to prevent a hydration mismatch.” See Next.js hydration error guidance.

Keep the server render and first browser render consistent
For the initial render, both environments should use the same deterministic values. Avoid choosing different markup based on browser-only values such as window or localStorage, or on values that may vary between renders, such as the current time, randomness, or a browser-specific timezone. These differences can make hydration fail even when the page later appears to correct itself.
When a browser-only value is genuinely needed—for example, a saved preference in localStorage—render a shared default first, then read and apply that value after hydration in an effect. Next.js notes that effects run during hydration, when browser APIs are available; its hydration guidance covers this mismatch pattern and related options.

Make current input state the source of truth
For a calculator driven by user input, keep the inputs in React state and compute the displayed result from that current state. Do not rely on a value captured only when the page was built, or copy an initial result into state and leave it unsynchronized with later input changes. The first state used in the browser must still match the one used to produce the server-rendered markup.
React describes hydration as attaching event handlers to existing HTML so it becomes interactive. Its static HTML output must be hydrated in the browser to support that interaction; see Next.js’s hydration explanation and React’s prerender documentation. For pages using Next.js Pages Router automatic static optimization, statically generated pages remain interactive after hydration; see Automatic Static Optimization.

Choose rendering and data freshness for the value
A calculator’s local arithmetic and the data it depends on have different freshness needs. A formula can be prerendered with a useful default and recalculate immediately from client-side input. A rate, inventory value, or other changing external input may need to be fetched or refreshed according to how current it must be.
| Approach | When data is produced | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static generation | At build time | The initial value can be reused between builds or refreshed on a planned schedule. | The generated snapshot can be out of date until the page is regenerated or revalidated. |
| Request-time rendering | For each request | The HTML needs data that is current at request time. | It does not make subsequent client-side input updates automatic; those still depend on interactive state. |
| Client-side fetching | In the browser | Data should load or refresh after the page opens. | The initial HTML may not include the fetched value, and the UI needs a loading or fallback state. |
In Next.js, caching behavior depends on the router and version. The Pages Router rendering reference cited here is for v14, while the caching guide cited here is for App Router v15; do not assume their defaults are interchangeable. Consult the documentation matching the application’s installed version: Pages Router v14 rendering and App Router v15 caching.

Disabling prerendering for a component can be appropriate if it cannot render consistently on the server. The cost is that the component no longer contributes prerendered HTML. Treat this as a targeted choice, not a way to refresh data throughout the application.

suppressHydrationWarning is a limited escape hatch, not a synchronization mechanism. Next.js says it works only one level deep, and React will not patch mismatched text content at the suppressed level. It will not make a stale calculator value current or connect an output to input state. See Next.js hydration error guidance and React error #418.
Quick Recap
A practical fix sequence
- Check the initial HTML to determine whether the old result exists before JavaScript runs.
- If it does, trace where that value is produced and how the page or route is cached; choose build-time reuse, revalidation, request-time rendering, or browser fetching to match its freshness needs.
- If the HTML is correct but hydration changes it, make the server render and first client render use the same deterministic initial values.
- If the result waits for an input event, wire the inputs to current client state and derive the result from that state.
- Use a browser-only component or a hydration-warning suppression only when the specific rendering constraint warrants it; neither replaces correct data flow.
