Treat it as a monitored, device-specific trial—not as hardware certified for unattended, 24/7 use.
Check the phone before leaving it on
Inspect the handset and charging cable before setting up the server. Do not use a phone that is visibly damaged or has a battery or enclosure that appears compromised. Find the safety manual for the exact model and check its charging instructions; connector type alone does not establish that a charger is suitable.

For example, Google’s Pixel 4a safety and regulatory manual specifies compatible charging accessories for that model and warns that incompatible accessories can cause injury or damage. Follow your own phone manufacturer’s requirements rather than applying Pixel guidance to another device.
Set up a cool, open charging location
Put the phone on a hard, stable surface with air around it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heating vents, hot cars, blankets and other places that trap heat. Charging and server activity can both add heat, so observe the phone during an initial trial rather than assuming it will stay cool.

Temperature specifications are model-specific. Google says the Pixel 4a works best at an ambient temperature of 0–35°C and should not be left where the temperature may exceed 45°C; those figures are not universal limits for Android phones. Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro safety guide also notes that demanding modes can generate extra heat and may cause reduced-power operation or a temporary shutdown. NIST likewise warns that charging in hot or heat-preserving places, such as direct sunlight or under a blanket, can expose a device to battery heat; it recommends peripherals designed for the device (Mobile Threat Catalogue).
If the phone gets too hot
Disconnect it from power, move it to a cooler place and do not use it until it has cooled. Google gives this instruction for the Pixel 4a and Pixel 6 families. If the phone is damaged or continues to behave abnormally, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Keep the charger accessible so you can disconnect power promptly.

Test whether Android will keep the server running
A powered phone is not automatically an available server. Android’s background-execution rules vary with the Android version, the app’s target SDK, service type and permissions. On Android 12 and later, apps targeting API 31 or higher generally cannot start a foreground service while already in the background, subject to exceptions. Apps targeting Android 14 (API 34) or later face additional foreground-service type and permission requirements; Android 15 (API 35) also restricts some services launched at boot. These are version- and target-dependent rules, not a blanket ban on running servers. See Android’s foreground services documentation and version-change guidance.
Test the actual server software on the phone: check it with the screen off, after it has been idle, and after a reboot. Manufacturer-specific power management may also affect background apps, so general Android documentation alone cannot establish how a particular handset will behave.

Foreground services and wake locks do different jobs
A foreground service communicates that an app is doing user-perceptible work, but it does not by itself keep the CPU awake after the display turns off. A partial wake lock can keep the CPU running; holding one unnecessarily can drain power. Follow the server app’s documented lifecycle approach and avoid keeping the CPU awake without a reason. Android explains the distinction in its wake-lock guidance.
Use a cautious trial before relying on it
- Identify the device: note its model and Android version, then find its own safety manual and charging requirements.
- Inspect the equipment: check the phone and cable for visible damage, and use a charger and cable compatible with that model.
- Choose the location: place the phone on a hard, open surface away from sunlight, heat sources and soft coverings.
- Start with a light workload: run the server while nearby and observe temperature and stability. No universal safe workload or monitoring interval is established for all phones.
- Check real operating conditions: test with the display off, after idle time and following a reboot. Confirm that the service remains available as needed before relying on it.
- Stop if something is wrong: if the phone becomes too hot, disconnect it, let it cool and do not use it until it has cooled.
Should you remove the battery?
Do not treat battery removal as a routine way to make a consumer phone suitable for permanent power. Android’s documentation for purpose-built batteryless devices describes platform implementation guidance; it is not a recommendation to remove a phone’s battery. Whether a particular handset can operate safely or reliably without its battery is not established here.

What this setup can—and cannot—promise
A compatible charger, good ventilation and a successful trial reduce avoidable risks, but they do not certify a phone for unattended operation or guarantee continuous uptime. The phone’s battery history, condition, Android build, server workload and app implementation all matter. If continuous availability is essential, do not assume an old phone will provide it without monitoring and device-specific validation.
