Google later said the site had appeared “in error” and was no longer surfacing in News. That explains the reported incident, but it does not prove what Google News is showing today: the available reports did not include a fresh September 2026 audit.
What happened
Futurism reported on April 9, 2026, that links to Polymarket prediction markets appeared in Google News. Its observations covered several placements:

- Polymarket markets appeared in the personalized For you area, sometimes as the top result.
- Futurism found market links on the Google News homepage during its checks.
- Event-related searches returned Polymarket links alongside established news outlets.
- Users could select Polymarket as a Google News source. Futurism said its comparable search for Kalshi did not offer the same choice.
One example concerned whether ships would transit the Strait of Hormuz. Results included reporting from established outlets and a Polymarket market about vessel passage. These placements were Futurism’s observations, not a Google-published description of a product change.

#1 Best Overall
Cointelegraph’s April 12 follow-up said the same example search no longer returned Polymarket results in its check. That follow-up supports removal by that date, but it does not establish how long the links had been visible or whether they later returned.
Is Polymarket still in Google News?
The cited reports do not answer that question for the present. They document a brief April appearance, Google’s explanation and a removal check on April 12. They do not provide a dated audit of Google News on September 28, 2026, or any later date.
Rank #2
Google has not publicly supplied an incident figure for the number of users exposed, the duration of the placement or the ranking mechanism involved. Futurism noted complaints reaching back to late March, with one report mentioning January, but those complaints do not prove when the placement began.

Accordingly, “Google News now prominently features Polymarket bets” is too strong as a current factual claim. The defensible description is that Polymarket markets were prominently visible for a period in April and Google said that appearance was an error.
Why this is different from ordinary news coverage
A Polymarket price is generated by trading around a defined outcome. It expresses what participants are paying for a contract that settles according to that outcome; it is not, by itself, a reported or verified account of events. The Associated Press describes Polymarket as an event-likelihood trading platform and distinguishes its international, crypto-funded blockchain operation from a more centralized, U.S.-dollar-funded U.S. operation regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Contract availability and legal status therefore depend on jurisdiction and can change.
| Question | Prediction-market price | Journalism |
|---|---|---|
| What it represents | A traded price associated with a defined outcome and an implied market probability. | A reported account of events, ideally supported by named sources, documents or direct observation. |
| How it is produced | Orders, trades, liquidity and the contract’s settlement rules. | Reporting, verification, editing and publication decisions. |
| What to inspect | The exact market wording, settlement date, resolution source, liquidity and recent trading. | The evidence, sourcing, corrections policy, publication date and separation of news from opinion. |
| What it cannot establish alone | That the underlying event occurred, or that the displayed price is unbiased or accurate. | That every claim is certain; responsible reporting still identifies uncertainty and limits. |
Putting a market card beside a news report can make an odds display look like another article about the event. Readers should treat it as a labeled market signal, not as independent confirmation.

What research says about quoting prediction-market odds
A September 2026 arXiv preprint by Hazem Ibrahim and Yasir Zaki examined links between Polymarket trading and news citations; it did not study Google News ranking or this particular incident. The authors linked 173.7 million signed Polymarket trades from 2024–2025 to coverage and examined 6,990 articles that mentioned prediction-market venues. Their matching process identified 1,582 sentences quoting odds and tied 918 of those sentences to a specific market.

The preprint reports that, after price dislocations of at least five percentage points associated with concentrated one-sided trading, market-odds citations were about 33% higher than a matched baseline in the following days. It also says market prominence predicted citation more strongly than the size of the price move.
Best Value
The authors estimate that moving a market five percentage points and having that move cited corresponds to roughly $0.7–1.0 million in their “epistemic leverage” measure. That is a method-dependent estimate in an arXiv preprint, not a universal cost of manipulating a market and not an incident-specific calculation.

Futurism reported that Google had announced an arrangement involving Polymarket and Kalshi data for Google Finance. The same report explicitly said it was unclear whether that arrangement had anything to do with Polymarket appearing in Google News. The two facts should therefore be kept separate: a Finance data relationship does not establish a News-ranking explanation.
How to interpret a Polymarket result if you see one
- Read the contract wording. Check exactly what outcome is being traded, the deadline and the source that will resolve it.
- Label the number correctly. Call it a market price or implied probability, not a reported fact.
- Find independent reporting. Look for primary documents, on-the-record sources and coverage that explains what has actually happened.
- Check timing and liquidity. A rapidly moving or thinly traded market can change quickly and may not represent broad information.
- Separate prediction from confirmation. Even a high price reflects trading behavior under a contract’s rules; it does not verify the event.
Bottom line
Polymarket did appear prominently in Google News during a short period in April 2026, according to Futurism, and Google said the placement was an error. Cointelegraph found the cited example removed on April 12. Those reports do not establish whether Polymarket has appeared again since then. If a market card shows up in News, read it as a trading-based probability and consult reporting before treating anything about the underlying event as established.
