The result can help someone organize memories or rehearse what they wish they had said, but it cannot reveal an ex-partner’s real thoughts, consent, or feelings. It is a generated performance built from whatever prompts, messages, images, and descriptions a user supplies.
Ashley Bardhan’s Futurism report from February 12, 2024, documents individual examples rather than measuring how common the practice is. The named apps and platform policies in that article were historical details and may have changed.

What an “AI clone” of an ex actually is
An AI ex is not a stored personality or a digital continuation of the person who ended the relationship. A chatbot predicts responses from patterns in its training and the context a user provides. If someone pastes text messages, emails, photographs, or a description of an ex’s mannerisms, the system can produce replies that resemble those inputs.

A wait-listed “Talk to Your Ex” app
Bardhan reported on an app called Talk to Your Ex that was on a waitlist at the time of publication. That is a snapshot from February 2024, not confirmation that the service is available now, safe to use, or operating under the same privacy terms. Read the original Futurism report.
A Reddit user’s image and chatbot experiment
The article recounts one Reddit user who used Yodayo’s image generator to make a picture resembling an ex and then created an AI ex-bot. It is an individual account reported by Futurism, not an independent estimate of how many people do this or what outcomes are typical.

Jake’s two ChatGPT versions
A 38-year-old interviewee identified as Jake told Futurism that he made two versions of an ex in ChatGPT: one designed to offer supportive advice and another imitating behaviors he associated with the relationship. He said the exercise helped him articulate and understand parts of what had happened. That is Jake’s description of his experience, not a clinical finding that the method works generally.
Can talking to an AI ex be healthy?
It depends on what the exercise is doing in a person’s life. A bounded conversation may function like a writing prompt: it can help identify unresolved questions, name recurring conflict, or draft words someone never sent. But the same simulation can become a loop that substitutes an imagined reply for accepting that the real person is absent.

Psychologist and relationship expert Marisa T. Cohen told Bardhan: “If the conversation enables you to better understand aspects of your relationship which you may not have fully processed, it may be able to provide you with clarity about how and why it ended.” She also warned that “if a person is using technology instead of interacting with others in their environment it becomes problematic.” These comments were reported by Futurism and should not be read as a diagnosis or a validated treatment recommendation.

Consent, privacy, and likeness
Copying an ex’s private messages, image, voice, or personal history into a third-party system raises questions separate from whether the exercise feels useful. The person may never have agreed to have their likeness reproduced or their communications processed for this purpose. The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Media Engagement identifies reproducing a romantic partner’s likeness without consent as an ethical issue; its discussion is educational, not a legal ruling. - Read the service’s current privacy policy before uploading messages or images.
- Remove names, contact details, workplace information, locations, and other unnecessary identifiers.
- Do not treat a generated confession, apology, or explanation as evidence of what the real person thinks.
- Remember that deleting a chat may not erase copies retained under a provider’s current policy.
A safer way to test the idea
- Define the task. Write down whether you want to identify a pattern, draft an unsent message, or simply recreate contact. If the goal is to keep receiving the ex’s imagined replies, pause before proceeding.
- Start with your own words. Use a journal or a de-identified summary rather than pasting a private message archive or uploading a recognizable image.
- Label the output as fiction. Treat every response as generated text, not testimony from the former partner.
- Set a limit. Decide in advance how long the exercise lasts and what you will do afterward—walk, call a friend, or return to another routine.
- Check the effect. If you feel more distressed, compulsive, isolated, or tempted to contact someone who asked for no contact, stop using the simulation and seek support from people you trust or a qualified mental-health professional.
What this phenomenon does—and does not—show
The accounts in the Futurism article show that consumer AI makes an imagined exchange easy to stage. They do not show that ex-partner clones are common, that they reliably aid recovery, or that any named service currently offers the same features. Whether the exercise helps depends less on how convincing the bot sounds than on whether it moves the user toward processing reality, rather than prolonging a relationship with an invention.

The Bottom Line
An AI clone can be a structured reflection tool, but it is never the former partner and cannot deliver verified closure. Keep the exercise limited, protect the other person’s data and likeness, and do not let an imagined conversation replace real human support.
