What Happened to OpenAI’s AI Web Browser, ChatGPT Atlas?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenAI’s AI browser was called ChatGPT Atlas, and it is no longer an upcoming release. OpenAI introduced Atlas on October 21, 2025, later marked it as deprecated, and said it was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. That date had passed by September 28, 2026.

What ChatGPT Atlas was

OpenAI described Atlas as “a new web browser built with ChatGPT at its core” in its October 21, 2025 announcement. The company said ChatGPT could remain available in the active browsing window, help with web tasks without requiring users to copy content into a separate chat, and use built-in memory so conversations could draw on prior chats and details.

Those statements describe OpenAI’s intended product design. They are not independent performance tests, and they do not establish how consistently every feature worked.

Atlas’s timeline and current status

Date What happened
October 21, 2025 OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas as a browser with ChatGPT built in.
August 9, 2026 OpenAI’s deprecation notice listed this as the date Atlas was scheduled to stop working.
September 28, 2026 OpenAI’s launch page identified Atlas as deprecated, and the scheduled shutdown date had passed.

According to OpenAI’s notice, Atlas should therefore be treated as discontinued rather than as a browser still awaiting release.

What features OpenAI documented

Atlas support materials covered several browser functions and settings:

  • Browsing and tab management
  • Autofill and downloads
  • Workspace switching
  • Safe search
  • Browser memories
  • Privacy controls and site permissions

OpenAI also published release notes describing browser feature releases, improvements and fixes. These documents show the areas Atlas supported or was intended to support; they do not prove that each feature remained usable through the shutdown.

What happened to Atlas’s replacement and successor features?

OpenAI said it was moving browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex. The announcement establishes the direction of that transition, but the available materials do not establish complete feature parity with Atlas.

In particular, they do not settle which Atlas functions are available today, which subscription plans or platforms support them, or whether successor products use the same privacy controls. It is safer to describe ChatGPT and Codex as the stated destinations for browser-based agentic work, not as confirmed one-for-one replacements.

What former users were told to do with their data

OpenAI’s deprecation guidance focused on bookmarks. Users were told to export Atlas bookmarks before August 9, 2026 and import them into another browser, such as Chrome.

That guidance confirms a bookmark migration path only. It does not establish what happened to every other category of Atlas data, including browser memories, settings, downloads or workspace information.
