Start by matching a manageable mount and storage footprint with roughly 4.5–6 inches (100–150 mm) of aperture, the range Adler Planetarium suggests as a useful starting point—not a universal rule. Your available table or tripod space, transport needs, targets and budget should decide the final model.
What matters most in a first telescope
Aperture determines how much light you collect
Aperture is the diameter of a telescope’s main lens or mirror. Celestron explains that a larger aperture gathers more light for faint deep-sky objects. That can reveal dimmer clusters, nebulae and galaxies, but larger instruments are usually heavier and harder to store or carry. Compare light-gathering ability with the places where you will actually observe. Celestron’s first-telescope guide states: “A larger aperture gathers more light for viewing faint deep-sky objects.” This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test.
A stable mount prevents frustrating views
A shaky tripod or undersized mount can make focusing and tracking difficult even when the optics are good. Celestron’s beginner guidance emphasizes a sturdy mount, so treat stability as a core specification rather than an accessory. A tabletop Dobsonian can be very steady on a solid table; a tripod-height setup may suit observers who lack a suitable table or want a more conventional standing position.
Set realistic visual expectations
An entry-level telescope can show lunar craters, ridges and shadows. Bright star clusters and nebulae may look like soft, grayish clouds, while galaxies commonly appear as faint smudges. Eyepiece views are generally dimmer and less colorful than processed, long-exposure photographs, so do not expect Hubble-like color or detail.

How much aperture should a beginner buy?
Adler Planetarium’s approximately 2019 guide suggests 4.5 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm) for a beginner telescope. Use that as a practical reference, not a performance guarantee: a smaller scope that is always ready can deliver more observing time than a larger one that stays packed away. Choose a design that fits your observing situation
Newtonian reflector
Newtonian reflectors use a mirror and are a common all-round beginner design. Sky-Watcher notes that restrictions on size and observing conditions should influence the choice. Reflectors can offer substantial aperture for the money, but check the tube length, storage location and the mount supplied with the package. Sky-Watcher’s questions-to-ask guide is at skywatcher.com.

Tabletop Dobsonian
A tabletop Dobsonian places a Newtonian optical tube on a simple alt-azimuth base. It is a sensible format when you have a sturdy, level table and room to use the tube. The Sky-Watcher Heritage 130P is one named beginner example; treat it as an example rather than a universal winner, and confirm the current package and availability before buying.
Tripod-mounted alt-azimuth scope
An alt-azimuth mount moves up/down and left/right, making it straightforward for visual observing. It is useful when you want the eyepiece at a standing or seated tripod height, but inspect the tripod’s rigidity and adjustment range. A larger optical tube on a light tripod can be less usable than a smaller scope on a solid mount.

Match the telescope to what you want to see
Moon and planets
Prioritize a steady mount, smooth focusing and eyepieces that provide useful magnifications. The Moon is rewarding even through modest apertures; planets require patience, accurate focus and steady air as well as optical size.
Clusters and nebulae
More aperture helps collect light from bright and faint deep-sky targets. Darker skies often improve the view as much as changing equipment, so consider whether you can travel away from urban lights.

Galaxies
Galaxies are challenging visual targets and usually appear as faint smudges. A larger aperture and darker location help, but no beginner telescope guarantees dramatic detail.
Basic phone snapshots versus astrophotography
A phone adapter or app-guided mount can assist with simple snapshots or locating objects. Guidance on a phone does not turn an alt-azimuth beginner setup into a system for long-exposure deep-sky imaging; that requires different tracking and imaging equipment.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the aperture and optical design, then compare the tube’s length and weight with your storage space.
- Check that the mount is sturdy enough for the supplied optical tube and that controls move smoothly.
- Decide whether you have a solid table for a tabletop Dobsonian or need tripod height.
- List your likely targets—Moon and planets, bright deep-sky objects or galaxies—and choose accordingly.
- Verify every included eyepiece, finder, adapter and phone requirement on the current manufacturer listing.
- Account for where you will observe, how far you must carry the equipment and how quickly you can set it up.
Try before committing
Adler Planetarium recommends attending an amateur astronomy club meeting or skywatching night. Looking through several designs can reveal whether a tabletop base, tripod height, field of view and setup routine suit you better than specifications alone. Astronomy.com’s beginner discussion also uses the Heritage 130P as an example, not as a one-size-fits-all answer: read its overview.
Safety essentials
Never point a telescope at the Sun unless you have a purpose-built, correctly fitted solar filter and follow the manufacturer’s approved procedure. An ordinary eyepiece filter, sunglasses or improvised material is not a safe substitute. For normal night observing, secure the mount, keep caps and small accessories organized, and avoid carrying a fully assembled unstable setup.

Bottom line: choose the scope you will use
For many first-time visual observers, a stable 100–150 mm setup is a strong starting point. Choose a tabletop Dobsonian if you have a sturdy table and value simple, solid observing; choose a tripod-mounted alt-azimuth model if height and portability matter more. Aperture helps, but regular access, stable support and realistic target expectations matter just as much.
