First check whether the stream is local or remote and whether Plex is Direct Playing, Direct Streaming, or transcoding. Replace a cable only if the wired path appears faulty; the available evidence does not establish a universal $10 fix.
Why Plex can be slow on a wired connection
Ethernet describes how a device connects, not how much usable capacity the entire route provides. A slow or faulty link, a client’s limits, insufficient bandwidth, or a server struggling to transcode can all cause buffering. Plex lists network capacity and transcoding speed among common causes, and identifies processor power, network speed, and storage as general server limits (Plex’s transcoder guidance; Plex’s network guidance).

Plex Support says a wired connection “will be faster and more reliable than a wireless (WiFi) connection.” That is general guidance, not a guarantee about a particular cable, port, switch, or wall jack (Plex’s buffering troubleshooting guide).
Start by identifying the playback route
Local playback
For playback on the same local network, check the quality setting in the Plex app on the device you are watching. Plex says local quality is controlled in the app and that a wired device can typically select the highest available local quality (Plex’s local quality settings guide). The highest option is not necessarily appropriate if the device or server cannot handle that format smoothly.

Remote playback
For playback away from the server’s local network, the stream must travel through the server’s internet connection and the viewer’s connection. Server upload capacity and client download capacity both matter. Select a remote quality that fits those connections; a wired server alone cannot remove an upload or download bottleneck (Plex’s remote quality settings guide; Plex’s network guidance).
Check whether Plex is transcoding
During playback, open the Plex dashboard or playback information and inspect the session’s video and audio status. Plex may show Direct Play, Direct Stream, or a transcode. These modes indicate different workloads:

- Direct Play: Plex sends a compatible media stream to the client without converting the media.
- Direct Stream: Plex repackages the media into a compatible container, generally without converting the video itself.
- Transcoding: Plex converts some or all of the media to meet the client’s format or quality requirements. Video transcoding can place substantial demand on the server’s processor (Plex’s transcoder guidance).
If the session is transcoding, inspect server CPU and, where applicable, GPU load while playback stutters. A busy processor points toward a processing or compatibility problem rather than automatically implicating the Ethernet cable. Also check whether the selected quality is forcing a conversion the server cannot sustain.
Check client compatibility and subtitles
The playback device’s support for the media’s format can determine whether Plex can Direct Play it or must convert it. Subtitle handling can change that path, too: Plex documents that an unsupported subtitle may need to be burned into the video, requiring video processing. Disabling Direct Play can also force transcoding (Plex’s explanation of video transcoding).

As a diagnostic, try playback with subtitles off and compare the session status. If playback becomes smooth or changes from transcoding to Direct Play, the subtitle or media-client compatibility path may be the issue. This is a test, not a reason to leave subtitles disabled if you need them; the more useful fix may be a compatible subtitle format or a playback device that supports the media.
If Direct Play is slow, inspect the complete wired path
When Plex is Direct Playing but playback still buffers, check the actual connection from server to client. That route can include each device’s Ethernet port, a switch or router, a wall jack, and multiple cable segments. A single weak link can limit the path even if both devices are plugged in.

- Check the negotiated link speed shown by the server, client, or network equipment. Confirm that it matches what the ports and equipment are expected to support.
- Temporarily connect the server and client through a known-working network path, bypassing a suspect switch, wall jack, or cable segment where practical.
- If a particular cable or run is implicated, try a replacement cable as a diagnostic. If the problem persists on a known-good path, buying another cable is unlikely to address the cause.
Plex says even a 100 Mb local network will usually work well, but that broad guidance does not establish that every stream, client, or network path will perform adequately (Plex’s buffering troubleshooting guide). A Cat6 cable is a reasonable conditional replacement or bypass for a suspect run—not a guaranteed upgrade or cure.

When hardware acceleration may help
Hardware acceleration can reduce CPU load for supported transcodes, but it is not a universal switch that fixes buffering. Whether it helps depends on server hardware and the specific media and conversion involved. First establish that transcoding is the bottleneck; then check Plex’s supported hardware and configuration guidance before changing settings (Plex’s hardware-accelerated streaming guide).
