A six-line simulator classification change produced a larger reported improvement than four matcher changes in Debashish Ghosal’s CauterRule experiment. The result is a useful debugging lesson, not proof that simulator fixes generally outperform matcher work: the reported pass rate rose alongside more false positives, and the figures come from one author’s account.
What the experiment was trying to measure
In a September 8, 2026 postmortem, Debashish Ghosal describes CauterRule as an open-source sidecar that extracts standing rules from repeated agent failures and tests those rules against replays. Its golden corpus contained ten canonical failure scenarios, including a non-fast-forward Git push, a package-version conflict, a missing Docker package, a missing Kubernetes CRD, a Terraform state lock, a pytest assertion, and a deployment timeout. The evaluation has two distinct jobs: the matcher looks for a trigger in a replay, and the simulator assigns meaning to what happened in that replay. A match can be found while its result remains inconclusive; even a decisive label can still be wrong. As Ghosal puts it, “A decisive verdict is not the same as a correct verdict.”

Four matcher changes improved coverage modestly
Ghosal first describes four matcher adjustments: correcting a precision formula, adding distinctive phrases, expanding aliases, and raising the phrase-match threshold. He reports that the golden pass rate moved from 10% to 20%, with fewer inconclusive outcomes. That indicates an improvement in this evaluation, but fewer inconclusive results alone do not establish that more classifications were correct.

A simulator classification change produced the larger golden-corpus gain
The later change reclassified successful trajectories carrying recovery-related failure labels as near-misses rather than treating them as broken successes. After that adjustment, the author reports the golden pass rate increased from 20% to 50% for both tested models: gpt-4o-mini and llama-3.1-8b. In the account, this classification correction had a bigger effect on the reported golden result than the matcher work.
Other corpora show the tradeoff
The gains were not uniform across outcomes. Ghosal reports these changes on the failures/positive and near-miss corpora:

The reported pass-rate gains came with more near-miss false positives. A system that catches more target failures but also flags more non-failures may or may not be better for a particular use; the costs depend on how those classifications are used.

How to interpret the result
- Separate detection from interpretation. Matcher coverage and simulator classification are different failure points. A change to either can shift the final evaluation.
- Track more than pass rate. Include inconclusive outcomes, classification correctness, and false-positive counts so a gain in one measure does not conceal a regression in another.
- Keep results attached to their conditions. The percentages above are Ghosal’s reported results for the described corpora and two models. They are not independently replicated benchmarks or general performance expectations.
- Reevaluate after changes. Once a bottleneck is corrected, run the relevant evaluation again; an older result may describe a system state that no longer exists.
What the postmortem leaves unresolved
Ghosal raises, but does not answer, whether expanding a reference corpus described as 230 trajectories to 330–430 would help distinguish triggers that match real failures from triggers that match too broadly—or whether the triggers need to be narrower. The reported results do not establish either corpus expansion or narrower triggers as the solution.

The account is valuable as a debugging case study: evaluation can be limited not only by whether a matcher recognizes a pattern, but also by how the simulator interprets the resulting trajectory. Its specific percentages and tradeoffs should be read as one author’s report, rather than independently verified evidence that the same fix will produce similar gains elsewhere.
