Your Android phone’s NFC reader can open tag-stored information, reveal details on compatible labels, start a device-connection flow, and read or write a personal tap point. What happens depends on the tag’s contents, your phone and Android version, and any app or service involved. NFC typically needs to be within 4 cm or less to initiate a connection, according to Android’s NFC overview.
First, what Android’s NFC reader does
NFC reader/writer mode lets an NFC-equipped Android phone communicate with passive tags and stickers. It is different from card-emulation mode, in which the phone presents itself as a card to an external reader. Android’s common tag-reading path uses NDEF, a format for records such as URLs and text. The system examines supported tag data and dispatches it to an app that can handle it; the phone does not invent information or make every tag compatible. See Android’s NFC overview and NFC basics.

That distinction matters: being able to read a tag does not mean a phone can read protected payment, transit, hotel-key, or access-badge data. The four uses below concern compatible tags and their encoded content, not unrestricted access to secure cards.

1. Open a smart poster or label’s information
A tag on a poster, sign, or product label can hold a URL or smart-poster record. Tapping it gives Android supported tag data to dispatch to an appropriate app, such as a browser for a web link. This is a handy way to reach a page without typing an address, provided the tag actually contains a usable link and the phone has an app that can handle it. NFC Forum describes tag interactions and examples in its NFC Technology overview.

Do not expect every link to open without confirmation. Android 16 sends URL tags through ACTION_VIEW; Android 17 surfaces an “open link” notification that requires explicit interaction. The behavior is version-sensitive, so the tap may lead to a prompt rather than an automatic page launch. Android documents tag dispatch in NFC basics.
2. Read information embedded in a card or product
Compatible NFC tags can be embedded in business cards, apparel, packaging, labels, and other products. Depending on what the owner encoded, a tap might reveal text, a contact record, or a web page. The phone can only show what the tag contains and what its software knows how to handle; the tag’s placement on a product does not guarantee that it carries useful details.

A tag alone is not proof that a product is genuine. Authentication requires a trustworthy system operated by the brand or another party able to verify the item. NFC Forum’s materials describe tag uses in products, but do not make a tag itself an authenticity check; see its 2020 position paper.
3. Start a device-connection flow with a tap
A tag can provide a tap-based entry point to an action, including a pairing flow. NFC Forum describes interactions initiated from NDEF content, and NXP lists pairing among target applications for its tag IC family. The NFC tap is only the starting point: completing pairing or another device-specific experience depends on the hardware, compatible software, and any app or service required.

For example, a tag might direct the phone to an app or relevant setup page. It does not guarantee that two devices will pair by NFC alone. The tag content and supporting system determine what happens after the initial interaction. See the NFC Forum overview and NXP NTAG213/215/216 product information.

A compatible blank sticker can store an NDEF URL or another record supported by the writing app and phone. That lets you make a physical tap point for a page or other content. Android recommends NFC Forum Tag Types 1–4 for interoperability on NFC-equipped Android devices. A tag’s type, whether it is rewritable, and the app’s capabilities all affect whether you can write it and later use it as intended. Android’s compatibility guidance is in its NFC overview.
NTAG213 is one example of an NFC Forum Type 2 tag IC family; that identifies a tag family, not a guarantee that every product using it will suit every task. NXP’s product information covers the family. A blank tag is not needed to read tags you encounter, and writing support depends on the tag and software.

What determines whether a tap works?
- Tag content: The tag must contain a supported record, such as a URL or text, for the phone to do something useful.
- Tag type: Android recommends NFC Forum Tag Types 1–4 for interoperability. MIFARE Classic support is optional, so compatibility with a particular card or tag is not universal. See Android’s NDEF API reference.
- Phone and software: The phone needs NFC hardware, and a suitable app or Android handler may be needed for the record.
- Writing and protection: Reading and writing are different capabilities. A tag may be read-only, or the app or phone may not support writing to it.
- Distance and placement: NFC is short-range; Android gives 4 cm or less as a typical connection-initiation distance, not a guaranteed range for every phone or tag.
