iPhone and Android photos can look different even when both phones photograph the same scene. Each camera applies its own processing—such as exposure, white balance, HDR, tone mapping, and sharpening—and the app or screen used to view a photo can change how it appears. To compare fairly, match the shooting conditions and settings, then view both files in the same app and on the same display.
Why the same scene can produce different photos
A phone photo is a finished rendering of sensor data, not a neutral record of it. The camera software makes choices about brightness, contrast, color, detail, and noise. Those choices vary by phone model and can make one image look warmer, brighter, sharper, or more contrasty than another.

HDR and tone mapping
Phones may combine multiple exposures to retain detail across bright and dark areas. Google Photos Help describes HDR photography as “capturing multiple photos at different brightness levels and blending them together into one photo.” The result still depends on how each camera merges and renders its frames.

That example explains one pipeline; it is not a frame count for every Android phone or current model.

Color, faces, and camera styles
White balance and exposure decisions affect the whole scene, while processing can also treat faces and other regions differently. Google’s account of Real Tone says its Pixel 6 work changed face detection, auto-white-balance and auto-exposure models, and stray-light handling. This is an example of how portrait rendering can be shaped by software, not an independent ranking of phone cameras.
Some phones also offer selectable looks. Apple says that, on supported models, “Photographic Styles intelligently adjust specific colors in different parts of your photos to create a customized look.” On those iPhones, a changed style can make a comparison look unlike one taken with Standard or another custom style.

Check whether the difference is in the photo or its display
HDR capture, an HDR image file, and an HDR-capable display are related but distinct. A photo may have been captured or saved with HDR characteristics, yet appear differently depending on the app, export format, and screen. Google Photos says HDR-capable screens are best for HDR photos and gives more than 1,000 nits as a compatibility reference—not a universal threshold for every HDR display. It also notes that unsupported devices or software, and some filters or exports, can result in SDR viewing or output.

Apple’s developer guidance explains that HDR image objects carry color-space information and may be tone-mapped to suit a display’s capabilities. If two phones show different versions of a picture, first open the original files in the same app on the same HDR-capable screen, where available. If one copy was exported, filtered, or shared through a service that changed its format, compare that copy with the original before concluding that the camera file itself changed.

A practical workflow for more consistent comparisons
- Match the scene and light. Photograph the same subject under the same lighting, as close together in time as practical. Keep framing and the selected lens or focal length comparable.
- Use comparable camera modes. Keep modes consistent, and avoid switching filters or styles between shots. On a supported iPhone, check Photographic Styles in Camera; Apple says styles can also be refined later in Photos. Use Standard or the same custom style for a more controlled comparison.
- Use one viewing path. Open both original files in the same app and view them on the same screen. Remember that an SDR export may not look like an HDR presentation.
- Add a neutral reference when color matters. Put a neutral gray card in the same light as the subject and take a reference frame. Kodak recommends using the same scene lighting for a useful reference. In a compatible workflow, use the card to establish a white-balance reference.
- Control blur and noise separately. For low-light shots, check that the lens is clean, improve the light if possible, and keep both phone and subject still. Google recommends Night Sight for low light and suggests a tripod or stable surface where possible.
What a gray card can—and cannot—do
A gray card can give you a repeatable neutral reference and help correct a color cast. It does not make two phones render the entire scene identically. Differences in tone curves, local HDR, contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, and sensor or lens response may remain after white balance is matched.
For more controlled work, a grayscale or color-reference target can provide additional checkpoints. X-Rite describes its ColorChecker Grayscale as a camera and lighting balance target, and Datacolor documents a gray-card white-balance workflow. The useful principle is the same: the target provides a reference under the light in which the subject was photographed; it does not standardize every camera-processing decision.

How to judge which result suits you
There is no single “true color” winner established here for iPhone versus Android as a whole. Results depend on the models, settings, lighting, software, and viewing path, and vendor documentation is not a controlled cross-brand comparison. Judge the specific phones and the kind of photos you take.

- Highlights and shadows: Decide whether you prefer more retained detail or the contrast and mood of a particular rendering.
- Color and white balance: Check whether neutral objects and scene colors look the way you expect under the lighting you use.
- Motion and low light: Consider blur and noise, and whether the result depends on holding the phone or subject especially still.
- Sharing and display: Check how the image looks in the apps, export formats, recipient devices, and screens you actually use.
- Lens consistency: Compare the lenses and focal lengths you use most. There is no current cross-brand ranking established for this factor.
