A photo can reveal where it was taken if its file contains EXIF GPS coordinates. You can use JavaScript in a browser to draw an image’s pixels onto a canvas and export a newly encoded image, which is a practical way to avoid carrying metadata through a sharing workflow. But canvas documentation does not guarantee that every browser and format removes every metadata field. If that guarantee matters, inspect the exported file before sharing it.
How a photo can expose a location
EXIF metadata can include GPS latitude and longitude. ExifTool’s documentation describes GPS latitude tags and shows coordinates in human-readable and machine-readable forms: ExifTool GPS tags and ExifTool Under the Hood. If a camera or phone records a location when a picture is taken, someone who receives the original file may be able to inspect that information.

Not every image contains GPS coordinates. Their presence depends on the capture device and settings, and on how the file has been handled since capture. The ExifTool project puts the underlying principle plainly: “You have the right to know about the metadata contained in your images.”
What canvas re-encoding does—and does not promise
A browser canvas holds a rendered bitmap. Drawing an image onto it and exporting that canvas creates a new image representation from those pixels. That makes re-encoding a practical approach to avoid carrying metadata that is not represented in the rendered image, but it is an inference about the workflow—not a documented guarantee that all metadata is removed in every browser and output format.

MDN documents drawImage() for drawing image sources to a canvas and toDataURL() for exporting the canvas as a data URL: Using images with canvas and HTMLCanvasElement.toDataURL(). MDN also notes that exports use 96dpi for formats that support resolution metadata. So “re-encoded” does not mean “guaranteed to contain no metadata.”
When you need assurance—for example, before posting a sensitive image—inspect the exported file with a metadata reader such as ExifTool, and check the fields relevant to your concern. Treat the original as unchanged; export a separate copy and share that only after checking it.

Re-encode a user-selected image in the browser
This example takes a local file selected by the user, decodes it, draws it at its original pixel dimensions, and exports a PNG Blob. It leaves the original file alone. PNG is used here for a straightforward supported target; the export is still not a universal metadata-removal guarantee.

The example uses toBlob() rather than toDataURL(). MDN warns that toDataURL() puts the complete encoded image into an in-memory string, which can be costly for large images: toDataURL() memory considerations. Blob export avoids that particular large-string representation, though decoding and canvas rendering still consume resources. Canvas maximum dimensions vary by browser and environment; there is no single file-size limit that applies everywhere: The canvas element.

Choose the image source with browser security in mind
| Input | What to expect |
|---|---|
| User-selected local file | The example’s file-input workflow avoids fetching an image from a foreign origin, so the usual remote-image CORS taint issue is less likely to arise. |
| Remote image URL | The image server must permit the necessary CORS access. Otherwise the canvas can become tainted and pixel reads or export may fail. |
MDN explains that a cross-origin image without appropriate CORS permission taints the canvas; attempts to read its data or export it with toBlob() or toDataURL() can result in a SecurityError: Use cross-origin images in a canvas. For remote images, setting an image’s crossOrigin attribute is not enough by itself—the server must also send an appropriate permission response. See MDN’s img element reference.
Choose an output format deliberately
toDataURL() supports PNG, and browsers may also support JPEG and WebP. If a requested format is unsupported, MDN says the browser falls back to PNG: toDataURL() format behavior. Format choice affects the image itself, not just metadata:

- PNG: useful when preserving transparency matters; it may produce larger files for some photographs.
- JPEG: commonly used for photos, but re-encoding is lossy and does not preserve transparency.
- WebP: can be a practical web-image option where supported; do not assume support in every browser or destination.
Changing formats or re-encoding can alter image quality, file size, transparency, or resolution-related information. Pick the format that suits the intended use, then verify metadata separately rather than treating a particular extension as proof that the file is clean.

Processing pixels in the browser means the image need not be uploaded by this canvas workflow. It does not, on its own, prove that the webpage is private or that no code can access the image. MDN notes that a script included directly on a page has the same access to page scripts and data as the page’s own code: Privacy on the web. If privacy is important, consider what scripts the page loads and use an implementation you trust.
