Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen memory, storage, processors or other PC components become costlier or harder to secure, laptop makers may raise prices, trim discounts, alter configurations or prioritize models that protect margins. Retailers may also build inventory ahead of expected price changes. These responses can make some laptops more expensive or harder to find, but market forecasts do not establish the price or stock status of any particular model.
How component pressure reaches laptop buyers
A laptop is assembled from parts that must be sourced in compatible quantities and on schedule. If a key input costs more or is less available, a manufacturer has several ways to respond: absorb the added cost and accept lower margins, pass some of it on to buyers, secure parts earlier, change memory or storage configurations, or shift production toward products with stronger margins. Retailers can bring purchases forward to build stock before anticipated increases.

The result may be a higher listed price, fewer discounts, fewer low-cost configurations, or a different product mix. These are possible market responses, not proof that a particular laptop’s price or availability changed because of a shortage. A product-family name alone may not identify the same configuration across sellers or over time.

Why memory and storage matter to notebook costs
TrendForce’s modeled US$900 mainstream notebook allocated approximately 68% of its bill of materials to the CPU, DRAM and SSD in 3Q26, compared with approximately 45% in 1Q25. This is an analyst cost model, not a measurement of retail prices or a claim that every laptop has the same cost structure. The higher modeled share helps explain why changes in these inputs can put pressure on a maker’s pricing and configuration choices. TrendForce, October 8, 2026; TrendForce, September 4, 2026

Pressure also differs by component and over time. TrendForce said CPU supply improved from 2Q26, while memory and storage cost pressure persisted. Its October outlook described differing prospects for DRAM and NAND rather than a single uniform supply trend. A constraint affecting one part therefore does not automatically mean all laptop components are scarce or that every model faces the same cost change. What recent market figures do—and do not—show
Market reports use different measures. Component-cost estimates and bills of materials describe inputs; sell-in prices reflect prices charged into the channel; shipment data counts units shipped. None is interchangeable with the retail price or in-stock status you see for one laptop at one seller.

| Source and date | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Omdia, March 2026, global outlook | US$90 to US$165 increase since 1Q25 in costs for mainstream memory and storage configurations | Component-cost context, not a laptop retail-price increase. Omdia’s then-current forecast was for global laptop shipments to fall 12%; this earlier outlook predates later forecasts. Omdia |
| Omdia, US, 2Q26 results and September 2026 outlook | US PC shipments excluding tablets rose 1.0% year over year to 18.8 million units; US average PC sell-in price rose 12.0% year over year and exceeded $1,000 | Observed quarterly shipments and sell-in pricing, not a direct measure of laptop retail prices. Omdia attributed the quarter’s shipment rise in part to purchases brought forward; its full-year US PC shipment forecast was a 10.7% decline. Omdia |
| Omdia, US, 2Q26 | Shipments fell 6.5% in the under-$699 band and rose 36.8% above $1,500 year over year | Shipment changes by price band, not retail-price changes or proof of local stock conditions. Omdia described premiumization and supply-driven cost inflation in the market. Omdia |
| TrendForce, September 2026 forecast | Global notebook shipments forecast to decline 9.4% year over year in full-year 2026 | A forecast for worldwide notebook shipments, not a count of laptop listings or available stock. TrendForce noted CPU supply had improved from 2Q26. TrendForce |
The US quarterly figures illustrate why a short-term increase in shipments can coexist with a weaker annual outlook: purchases can be brought forward, while later demand or supply remains under pressure. They do not establish what is happening in other countries or in a particular retailer’s inventory.

| TrendForce, September 4, 2026 | Global notebook shipments down 9.4% | Global notebook full-year 2026 forecast. TrendForce |
These estimates should not be averaged into a single consensus: “PC” and “notebook” scopes differ, as do geographies, publication dates and methodologies. Gartner’s February statement that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028” is also a forecast, not an established outcome. Gartner, February 26, 2026

- Match the configuration. Check installed memory and storage, processor and other specifications; two listings in the same product family may not describe the same machine.
- Check price for that configuration. Compare the current price against offers with matching specifications, rather than assuming a whole product family has one price.
- Verify stock and delivery at the seller. Availability and estimates can differ by retailer and location, so check them when you are ready to order.
- Read seller terms. Confirm who is selling the laptop, warranty coverage and return conditions.
The market evidence does not establish that buying immediately is financially preferable, nor does it identify a universally best laptop. It supports checking current configuration, price and availability directly.
