Start with the checks built into your operating system. Battery-saving settings can extend time between charges, but they cannot restore worn capacity; a battery replacement can help only if the battery—not unsupported software or another failing part—is the main problem.
Start by separating battery runtime from battery health
Battery runtime is how long the laptop runs on one charge. Battery health is how much capacity the battery retains as it ages. Overall service life also depends on whether the laptop remains secure, reliable, and capable of the work you need.

Power-saving settings can stretch runtime without repairing a degraded battery. Conversely, a healthy battery will not fix a laptop that is slow because its storage is nearly full or its software is no longer supported. Identify the bottleneck before spending money.
Reduce battery wear with sensible charging and temperature
Heat and frequent deep discharges can accelerate lithium-ion battery wear. Microsoft Support recommends, where practical, keeping a battery in a moderate charge range—about 20% to 80% for routine use—and avoiding frequent full discharge. These are care recommendations, not a promise of a particular battery lifespan. Avoid leaving a laptop in hot conditions, and use built-in charge management rather than repeatedly adjusting charging by hand.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use the charge controls your model provides
- Windows: In Settings, look for Smart charging or other battery-care options if your device supports them. Microsoft says Smart charging can keep some plugged-in devices near a recommended charge level. Availability and behavior vary by device.
- Mac: Check Battery settings on your Mac for available battery health or charge-limit options. Apple describes battery health management for Apple-silicon laptops, but features differ by model. See Apple’s explanation of battery health management.
If you will store a laptop unused, Microsoft recommends leaving it at roughly 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place and checking it periodically so it does not discharge deeply. This is storage guidance, not the routine-use target.
Treat swelling as a safety issue
If the battery is visibly swollen, stop using the laptop. Microsoft’s guidance is to stop using a device if its battery expands beyond the enclosure; do not press, puncture, or try to flatten it. Arrange appropriate service for the specific model.
Stretch time between charges with power settings
For a laptop that still works well but runs down too quickly, reduce avoidable power use. Windows Energy Saver or Battery Saver can limit some background activity. Lower screen brightness and shorten the time before the display turns off. If your laptop exposes refresh-rate or graphics options, choosing a lower-power setting may also help. The available controls depend on the device and Windows version; Microsoft’s Windows battery-saving tips cover these options.

These changes may increase runtime per charge, but they do not restore lost battery capacity. If runtime remains poor after adjusting settings, check battery condition before buying parts.
Check battery condition before replacing anything
Windows 11: generate a battery report
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Open the HTML report at the file location shown in the command output. Review its battery usage and capacity information to help determine whether capacity has declined.
Microsoft documents this report in its Windows battery-care guidance. The report provides diagnostic information; it does not by itself establish that a replacement is compatible or worthwhile.
Mac: review Battery settings
Open System Settings and select Battery, then review the battery condition and maximum capacity information shown for your Mac. The wording and available controls vary by model. Apple’s Battery settings guide explains the options.

A battery replacement is worth investigating when battery capacity is the main limitation. Compatibility, repair method, and cost depend on the exact laptop model and local service options. Do not assume a battery fix will resolve slow performance, unsupported software, or storage problems.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Low free storage can interfere with updates and everyday work. Before deleting files or making major changes, verify that important documents and photos are backed up. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ suggests removing unneeded files or apps, or moving files to another drive, including an external USB drive, when there is not enough space for an update.
Choose external storage that matches the laptop’s connection and the capacity your backup workflow needs. A drive can reduce data-loss risk and help preserve files during repair or migration; it does not make the laptop itself faster or extend its hardware life.

One symptom rarely proves a laptop must be replaced. Look for patterns and use the system’s built-in health and activity tools to identify what is consuming resources. Microsoft lists signs worth assessing such as increasingly slow tasks, frequent fan noise, recurring errors, declining battery life, low storage, sustained high CPU, memory, or disk use, and inability to receive current updates. Its guide to assessing whether a PC needs replacement also recommends checking PC health and backing up important files.
- Low storage: Back up first, then remove unneeded files or apps, or move files to another drive.
- Frequent fan noise or sustained high resource use: Check which apps or processes are active and whether the workload is necessary. Persistent symptoms warrant diagnosis rather than guessing at an internal upgrade.
- Recurring errors or failed updates: Record the error and check whether the device can still receive current updates. An unsupported operating system is a security concern as well as a usability issue.
- Poor battery life: Compare power settings and battery condition; runtime settings and battery capacity are different problems.
Do not assume that cleaning, adding memory, or replacing storage is a universal fix. The laptop’s exact model determines whether parts are upgradeable and what service is safe. Back up before repair, and ask a qualified service provider to assess the model when symptoms persist.
Decide whether service is worthwhile for your laptop
There is no universal repair-versus-replacement price threshold. The sensible choice depends on the laptop’s model, the parts and service available locally, remaining software support, the failure causing trouble, and whether the device still meets your needs.
- If battery capacity is the main issue and the laptop otherwise works reliably, ask about a compatible battery and a safe replacement route.
- If the system is unsupported, repeatedly errors, or has persistent performance problems, a battery alone may not solve the important issue.
- If data is at risk, prioritize a verified backup before troubleshooting or service.
Apple provides model-specific battery checks and service information through its Mac laptop support page. For other laptops, use the manufacturer’s support information or a repair provider that can identify the exact model and compatible parts.
