When an Amazon Kids tablet has trouble, first identify whether the problem affects Wi-Fi, one app, a download, or a particular video. A Fire tablet that works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi points to the network; a title missing only from a child profile may instead be blocked by profile settings or content eligibility. Work through the checks below in that order.
First, identify what is failing
Separate the symptom before changing settings:
- It cannot join Wi-Fi: check Airplane mode, the network name and password, and other devices on the same network.
- It joins Wi-Fi but has no internet: compare another device and try a phone hotspot to isolate the connection.
- Only one app crashes or freezes: troubleshoot that app before resetting network settings.
- An app is missing, blocked, or stuck downloading: check Store access, parent approval, child-profile settings, and storage.
- A video is missing or will not play: check connectivity and app behavior, then confirm the child profile can access that title.
If several devices have internet problems, start with the network. If other services work on the tablet and only one app or title fails, focus on that app or the child profile.

Why won’t my Fire tablet connect to Wi-Fi?
Use this sequence for a connection failure or a Wi-Fi connection with no internet. Amazon’s Fire Tablet Wi-Fi troubleshooting covers these checks.

- Turn off Airplane mode. Confirm you selected the right Wi-Fi network and entered its password correctly.
- Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi. Move the tablet closer to the router, away from potential interference such as microwaves and baby monitors, and reduce competing device traffic if bandwidth is constrained.
- Restart the tablet and reboot the modem or router. Wait two minutes before trying the connection again.
- If the network is hidden, add it manually by entering its name and password and selecting the hidden-network option.
- Reset the tablet’s network settings: open Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset, then reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- Check for a software update using Amazon’s Fire Tablet Software Updates page. Match the instructions to your tablet’s model and generation.
- Try a phone hotspot. Amazon’s guidance says, “If this works, the issue is with your network, not your tablet.” If multiple devices also fail on your Wi-Fi, contact your internet provider.
Mesh networks, extenders, and public Wi-Fi
For a mesh system or extender, Amazon says the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and mesh or extender networks must use the same network name, security type, and password. On public Wi-Fi, a sign-in page may be required. If it does not appear, open a simple website in Silk or select the connected network and choose Sign in.

Why won’t apps download, or why is an app missing or blocked?
On a Fire tablet, open Games & Apps or the Apps/Games app, then choose an app from Library or search the Store. If the problem is in a child profile, the parent may need to allow Store access or approve the download. Amazon’s guides explain downloading apps and managing Amazon Kids content and settings.
- Check the child profile’s Store and content settings in Parent Dashboard or on the tablet.
- If the child requested the title, check whether the parent has approved it.
- After sharing approved content, allow a few minutes for it to appear in the child profile.
- Check available storage. Amazon’s Optimize Storage instructions describe archiving or removing unused content.
Adult-profile parental controls can restrict downloads, content types, and wireless connectivity. Amazon describes those controls as designed for adult profiles and users aged 13 and older; manage a child under 13 through the Amazon Kids child profile instead.
Do not try to move app installations to a microSD card as a workaround: Amazon says FireOS 6 and later cannot install apps and games to microSD. Menu names and steps can vary by FireOS version, so use the support instructions that match your tablet.

If the app is already installed but fails when opened, follow Amazon’s app troubleshooting steps in order:
- Force close the app.
- Restart the tablet.
- Clear the app’s data and cache. On devices using the documented menu, go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications (or See all apps) > select the app > Storage > Clear Data or Clear Storage, then Clear Cache.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app if the option is available. Pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled.
Clearing data may remove information stored locally in the app, so check the app’s own guidance if you need to preserve it. If the problem remains limited to one app, use the developer contact details on that app’s Amazon Appstore page. Settings labels can differ across FireOS versions.
Why can’t my child see this app or video?
A title that is available on the adult profile may still be unavailable in Amazon Kids. Check the child profile’s content controls and whether the parent has shared or approved the title. Amazon says Prime Video rentals and Videos Included with Prime cannot be added to a child profile, while purchased videos can be shared. See Amazon’s Amazon Kids content help for profile controls.

First confirm that the tablet can access the internet. If other network services work, restart the tablet and use the app troubleshooting sequence above if only one streaming app is affected. If the video is absent from the child profile, check title eligibility and parent settings before treating it as a tablet fault.
For offline viewing, Amazon’s Prime Video download help says to start from a movie’s detail page or the download icon beside an episode. Download availability and playback behavior can differ by title, subscription, and profile; do not assume every video can be downloaded or shared with a child profile.
Amazon’s general Fire tablet support covers network and app recovery, but does not establish one universal fix for buffering, playback error codes, licensing errors, or streaming-app outages. If the tablet accesses other services and the video problem persists, check the streaming app’s current help or contact its developer.
Check the update for your exact Fire tablet
FireOS versions differ by model and generation. Amazon’s software updates page lists versions by tablet family; the table can change, so use it to check your own model rather than treating a version number seen elsewhere as current. Identify the exact tablet before manually installing an update.
Amazon’s Fire Tablet Quick Start Guides list Kids and Kids Pro models by generation and release. If you are unsure which instructions apply, identify the model first and then follow the corresponding support page.
