Mathematicians’ objections are not simply about whether AI can do mathematics: they also concern whether the proofs will be published in a form others can check, how prior and unpublished work is handled, and whether researchers can trust commercial AI tools with their work. A September dispute over a claimed Navier–Stokes result has sharpened those questions. The available reporting does not establish that OpenAI copied researchers’ work, that the disputed proof has been independently verified, or that the next planned release has happened.
Why are mathematicians upset with OpenAI again?
The immediate concern is how OpenAI communicates and substantiates its mathematical claims. WIRED reported on October 6, 2026, that the company was preparing to release more than 100 solutions to long-standing open problems, but had not set a release time. Some mathematicians want results presented in papers that explain the methods and place them in context, rather than first appearing as a brief announcement or social-media post. Without that detail, it is harder to evaluate a proof, identify relevant earlier work, and understand what a result contributes.

Mathematician Bryna Kra described a meeting with OpenAI as producing “a mixture of excitement and dread,” while calling it a promising first step. She also argued that “Math by tweet and math by press release” is not a way to nurture the mathematical community that made the work possible. These are concerns about standards and relationships around research, not proof that the model’s outputs are wrong.

The disagreement is especially sensitive because mathematicians are weighing both the opportunity and the costs of AI systems trained on mathematical work. At a Caltech event, TechCrunch reported concerns about the effects of AI-company practices on researchers and the discipline. The debate includes publication quality, attribution, collaboration, and confidence in sharing unpublished work with commercial tools.

What does OpenAI claim, and what has been checked?
OpenAI announced on September 21, 2026, that an internal model had resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems after training began on August 28. That is the company’s description of its model’s outputs; the available sources do not provide an independently verified count or an independent assessment of each solution. A claimed result, a publicly inspectable proof, and a proof reviewed by mathematicians are different stages.
OpenAI also said it had created an independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study. The company says the group will advise on review and communication of results, research standards, and tools for mathematical research and learning. It is unpaid and, according to OpenAI, will not advise the company on how quickly to pursue its internal mathematics work. The group’s advisory role is not itself verification of any proof or resolution of the Navier–Stokes dispute.

As of WIRED’s October 6 report, the planned release had no stated time. The sources available here do not establish whether it occurred later. Nor do they establish that the reported Navier–Stokes proof has been independently verified or accepted.
What is the Navier–Stokes dispute?
The Navier–Stokes equations describe fluid motion. The open problem at issue concerns their mathematical behavior in three dimensions. It is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s seven Millennium Prize problems; TechCrunch reported that each carries a $1 million prize for a solution meeting the institute’s requirements. That prize is context, not evidence that OpenAI’s claimed result qualifies or that an award has been made.

In September 2026, NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster said OpenAI’s work overlapped with unpublished research he had pursued with Levent Alpöge, who works at Anthropic. TechCrunch reported that the two had been working on related fluid-dynamics research and had used Codex and Claude in their work. Buckmaster questioned whether information about their progress had reached OpenAI and whether its parallel effort followed their research direction. These are allegations and concerns, not an established finding that OpenAI copied their work.
OpenAI’s account, reported by Axios and TechCrunch, is that its researchers had not seen the pair’s specific work or accessed their specific user data before publication. The company also said it could not entirely rule out an indirect influence through de-identified data used to improve models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “Now that we can see their work, the approaches appear to be different.” That is OpenAI’s characterization, not an independent comparison establishing whether the work overlaps.

What evidence would help resolve the questions?
The competing accounts turn on distinctions that a headline alone cannot settle. A shared interest in the same open problem is not the same as a shared specific method or unpublished result; likewise, a denial of access to specific user data does not settle every question about possible indirect training influence. Assessing the claims requires transparent evidence and enough detail for qualified reviewers to compare the work.

The company denies access to the pair’s specific user data, while acknowledging it cannot entirely rule out indirect influence from de-identified data.
- Mathematical overlap: Do the methods or specific results overlap, beyond addressing the same broad problem? The accounts in the available reporting do not settle that comparison.
- Proof transparency: Are the arguments and supporting details public in a form specialists can examine? A headline claim or short announcement is not enough to assess a proof.
- Attribution: Does a full account identify relevant prior work and collaborators? That matters whether the overlap proves substantial or not.
- Independent review: Have mathematicians outside the company checked the argument and its assumptions? The sources here do not establish such verification for the reported Navier–Stokes proof.
OpenAI’s January 2026 paper discusses Lean, a proof assistant that checks formalized proof steps. Such checking can increase confidence that the formalized steps follow, but it does not remove the need to assess whether the formalization captures the intended mathematical claim and whether the result is significant. Formal verification and community review address related but distinct questions.

What should readers take from the dispute?
OpenAI’s announcement points to potentially important AI-generated mathematics, but the company’s claimed number of results should not be treated as an independently confirmed count. The central issue is whether the work will be shared with enough proof detail and context for other mathematicians to inspect, and whether the process handles prior work and unpublished research responsibly.
For the Navier–Stokes case, Buckmaster’s concern and OpenAI’s response remain competing accounts in the cited coverage. The sources do not establish copying, do not show that the claimed proof has been independently verified, and do not confirm whether the next results release occurred after WIRED’s October 6 update. OpenAI’s advisory group may influence how the company handles review and communication; its creation alone does not answer those open questions.
