Why OBS Drops Frames on a Shared ACT Fibernet Connection—and How to Diagnose It

OBS network drops mean the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or short on bitrate headroom. Use controlled tests to separate household contention, Wi-Fi, and upstream issues without assuming ACT is at fault.

If OBS’s network dropped frames counter is rising, the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Other people or devices uploading over the same ACT Fibernet connection could be consuming the headroom your stream needs—but that symptom alone does not prove ACT is at fault. First distinguish network drops from rendering or encoding problems, then compare a lower-bitrate stream with household uploads paused and with the computer connected by Ethernet.

What “dropped frames” means in OBS

OBS describes network dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. In this case, the remote server is YouTube’s live ingest service. OBS drops frames to compensate when it cannot deliver the stream reliably.

That is different from rendering lag, where OBS cannot render frames quickly enough, and encoding overload, where the encoder cannot process frames at the selected settings. A busy shared connection is one plausible cause of network drops, not a diagnosis of an ACT outage, plan limitation, or faulty route.

How to diagnose the cause

1. Confirm which OBS counter is increasing

Open OBS’s View > Stats window while reproducing the problem. Check whether the rising figure is Dropped Frames (Network), rather than Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag. If the network counter is not the problem, changing the internet connection may not address the actual cause.

2. Record a baseline under normal conditions

Before changing settings, note the time, OBS output settings, whether the computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, what other household devices are doing, the OBS log, and any messages in YouTube’s stream health panel. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing a broadcast before going live with representative audio and motion. A speed test can help describe the connection, but a single peak upload result does not establish that the link can sustain a stream under load.

3. Pause other uploads and create bitrate headroom

Ask household members to pause cloud backups, file uploads, large attachments, or other upload-heavy activity, then repeat the test. If the drops ease, contention is a reasonable explanation: the stream may have been competing for the shared upstream capacity. This does not show that ACT itself is at fault.

Next, lower OBS’s video bitrate and test again. OBS gives about 75% of total upload speed as a starting rule of thumb; it is guidance, not a guarantee. Leave additional headroom if upload performance varies or other devices need the connection. Reducing bitrate can improve reliability, but it also reduces the amount of video detail the stream can carry.

4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet

Run a comparable test with the streaming computer connected directly to the router by Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If the wired test improves, investigate Wi-Fi signal strength, interference, distance, or router placement. If you need a cable to make the comparison, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one suitable option; it is a way to test the connection, not a guaranteed cure.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If network drops persist over Ethernet, with other uploads paused and a lower bitrate, the problem may be farther upstream than the Wi-Fi link. Keep those test conditions and timestamps for the next checks.

5. Check YouTube stream health and, if practical, another destination

Review YouTube’s stream health messages during a private or unlisted test, and test before a real broadcast. Where practical, compare with another streaming destination. A difference can help identify a destination-specific path issue, but it cannot by itself prove that YouTube or ACT is responsible.

6. Contact ACT with useful evidence

If drops continue in wired tests at a bitrate your connection can sustain, contact ACT and provide the service location, exact failure times, OBS logs, upload-test results, YouTube stream-health messages, and whether other destinations are affected. Ask ACT to investigate the connection at those times, including possible congestion or route changes. Without measurements for your location and time, there is no basis to claim that ACT has a general upload-speed or YouTube-routing problem.

Choose YouTube settings for available upload capacity

YouTube’s published recommendations below are encoder bitrates, not minimum ACT plan speeds and not guarantees of a stable stream. Match the row to your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test whether your connection can sustain it with room for variation and other household traffic.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommendation for your chosen output, test a lower bitrate and, if necessary, a lower resolution or frame rate. The trade-off is less picture detail or motion smoothness for more network headroom.

Common causes and fixes

  • Someone is uploading or backing up files: pause the other upload and retest; if that changes the result, shared upstream contention is likely.
  • Wi-Fi signal or interference is unstable: compare on wired Ethernet before changing other settings.
  • The configured bitrate leaves too little headroom: lower it, then test under the household conditions in which you actually stream.
  • The problem appears only on YouTube: inspect YouTube stream health and compare another destination if possible; this narrows the investigation but does not assign blame.
  • OBS shows rendering lag or encoding lag instead: treat that as a different symptom; network changes alone may not fix it.
  • Drops persist across wired, lower-bitrate tests: preserve logs and timestamps and ask ACT to investigate the specific connection and periods involved.

Or let it run in the cloud
