Keep the scheduled YouTube event and stream key available while FFmpeg recovers, then confirm that the encoder feed has returned. Reusing the same key helps maintain the intended ingest identity, but it does not guarantee YouTube will keep the event live through every disconnect. Use a process that can retry transient failures, monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health, and test the whole recovery path before relying on it.
What a reconnect can—and cannot—preserve
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube documents reusing stream settings and keys, so for a recurring show you can use the intended event and key again rather than creating a different ingest setup for each run. Treat the key like a password: don’t include it in public logs, screenshots, or configuration files shared with others. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings.

Keeping the same key is not a promise that the viewer-facing live event survives any outage. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not specify a reconnect grace period or guarantee that a particular FFmpeg retry loop will preserve the same event. Nor should you assume a restarted encoder resumes the file at the exact last encoded frame. Those behaviors depend on the deployed FFmpeg version, output protocol, event settings, and how the job is restarted; test them with your own setup.

Prepare the event and encoder before going live
1. Create or schedule the live event
-
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the intended live event using the encoder workflow.
-
Record the stream URL and key shown for that event. Configure FFmpeg to use the exact ingest URL and key shown in Live Control Room; prefer the RTMPS URL when it is supported by your encoder and network.
-
For a recurring show, reuse the intended stream settings and key where appropriate. Review auto-start and auto-stop deliberately: YouTube provides those controls and copies settings when you reuse them, but its cited guidance does not prescribe one universal choice for FFmpeg reconnect loops.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted ingest option. Encryption protects the connection; it does not provide reconnect handling or guarantee uptime. If a connection times out, check that the configured server URL is the one shown in Live Control Room and that your FFmpeg build supports the RTMPS connection you selected. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
2. Make the publishing job recoverable
Keep the prerecorded input and the publishing job under a process arrangement that can detect a failed FFmpeg process and restart or retry it after transient output failures. The exact FFmpeg flags, retry behavior, and timing depend on the FFmpeg version and output protocol; YouTube’s cited documentation does not provide an FFmpeg reconnect command or guarantee a particular retry interval. Do not treat a copied command as a guarantee. Confirm what your deployed version does when YouTube or the network drops the output connection.

Also decide what the restart should do with the input. Verify that the file remains readable and that audio, video, and timestamps continue as expected. A process restart may begin the file again or otherwise alter playback position; only a test of your actual workflow can establish what viewers will see.
3. Match the feed to YouTube and your connection
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to values supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and sustainable on your actual upload connection. YouTube recommends choosing a bitrate reliable for the available connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than relying on a remembered value.
Test with representative motion and audio. A prerecorded file can have a different bitrate profile from the average suggested by its resolution, so a short, easy-to-encode segment is not enough to establish that the full stream is stable. Watch both the local FFmpeg process and stream health in Live Control Room during the test.
4. Test the recovery path before the real event
-
Start the scheduled event and confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and reports healthy stream status.
-
Simulate the failure you expect to recover from, such as a brief network interruption or stopping and restarting the publishing process.

Check the viewer-facing player as well as Live Control Room. Record whether the same event remains available, how long the interruption lasts, and where playback resumes. Do not infer those outcomes from the fact that the same key was reused.
When a single encoder is not enough
A single-encoder retry is simpler, but it depends on that encoder, host, and network returning successfully. A separate backup encoder can provide another feed path, but adds operational complexity and may require another host or network connection. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. That test—not the existence of a backup configuration—is what shows how your event behaves. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For a meaningful comparison, assess whether the same event remains available to viewers, the recovery time and visible interruption, media position and timestamp continuity, monitoring needs, and the cost of the second host or network path. YouTube’s cited guidance recommends testing failover but does not guarantee these outcomes.
Troubleshoot a failed reconnect
-
YouTube does not receive the restarted feed: Compare the configured ingest URL with the exact URL in Live Control Room, confirm the intended key is still in use, and check RTMPS support if you chose an RTMPS endpoint. YouTube identifies an incorrect server URL or missing RTMPS support as possible causes of a connection timeout.

FFmpeg exits and stays down: Check the local process logs and the supervisor or retry mechanism. Verify that the restart arrangement is actually detecting the exit and launching the publishing job again; a stream key alone does not restart a process.
-
The process returns but the video does not: Confirm the source file is still readable and inspect whether the restarted job opened the expected input. Check the outgoing feed and stream health rather than assuming the local process being alive means usable video and audio reached YouTube.
-
The feed returns but playback is not continuous: Compare the viewer-facing player and the media position with your test notes. A reconnect can restore a feed without proving that it resumed at the last encoded frame or without a visible interruption.
-
The connection is unstable even without a process crash: Revisit bitrate against measured upload capacity, use a reliable wired connection where practical, and rerun a representative test while monitoring stream health. An Ethernet cable can improve the local link’s consistency, but cannot guarantee a reconnect or fix an upstream outage.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
The event stops when the encoder disconnects: Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and test them with the actual retry workflow. The controls exist, but the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universally correct setting for FFmpeg retries.

Copyright and prerecorded content
Before looping a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to use its video and audio in a YouTube livestream. A file being prerecorded does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it, and reconnect settings do not affect copyright or monetization eligibility. YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-health instructions are separate from those content questions. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded video looping on YouTube without keeping a local FFmpeg machine online, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and YouTube streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is not a camera encoder, and it does not make a disconnected FFmpeg event resume automatically; it is an alternative way to run an uploaded-video stream.
