To send urlwatch change alerts to Telegram, create a bot with BotFather, start a chat with it, find the destination’s chat ID with urlwatch --telegram-chats, then enable urlwatch’s Telegram reporter in its YAML configuration.
1. Create a Telegram bot and start a chat
- In Telegram, open a conversation with BotFather, send
/newbot, and follow its prompts. - Copy the Bot API token BotFather provides. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or commit it to a shared repository.
- Open the bot using the link Telegram provides and send
/start. The bot needs to be involved in the private chat before you look up its destination ID.
2. Find the Telegram chat ID
Run this command in the environment where you use urlwatch:

urlwatch --telegram-chats
Find the ID for the intended destination and use that value as chat_id. If urlwatch does not show the expected private chat, confirm that you started the bot with /start, then run the command again.

What a urlwatch Telegram alert includes
Telegram is the delivery destination; urlwatch determines which jobs are monitored and what changes are reported. The urlwatch Handbook says: “The change notification will include the URL that has changed and a unified diff of what has changed.”
Troubleshoot missing Telegram messages
- Reporter disabled: check that the configuration contains
enabled: trueundertelegram. - Incorrect token: copy the Bot API token from BotFather again and replace the placeholder with the actual value.
- Wrong or unavailable chat ID: start the bot chat with
/start, then rerunurlwatch --telegram-chatsand select the ID for the intended destination. - Looking for a Telegram test command: the current urlwatch 2.29 reporter documentation does not specify a Telegram-specific test command. Check the CLI help or documentation for your installed urlwatch version before using a test option.
Or skip the browser setup
If you also need website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is separate from urlwatch and does not configure Telegram alerts. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request; for example, with cURL:
