YouTube Live Control Room Says “No Data” While FFmpeg Sends RTMP: How to Troubleshoot It

FFmpeg reporting a send does not confirm YouTube has a usable feed. Check the stream URL and key, logs, Live Control Room preview, protocol, encoder settings, and outbound connection.

If YouTube Live Control Room says “No data” while FFmpeg appears to be sending RTMP, don’t assume the stream has reached YouTube just because FFmpeg is running. Check that the destination URL and stream key match the intended stream, inspect FFmpeg’s output, then use YouTube’s preview and stream-health status to confirm whether YouTube is receiving a usable feed. The symptom alone does not identify one cause.

Work through the checks in this order

  1. Confirm the selected stream’s URL and key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the relevant stream. Under Stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the FFmpeg configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance directs creators to enter those values in their encoder: YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming. Make sure the values belong to this stream, not another scheduled or active stream. Treat the key as a password: don’t share it or include it in logs you send to others. If it may be stale or exposed, retrieve or reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg.
  2. Read the complete FFmpeg output. Review the command and log lines for connection or authentication failures, stream mapping problems, codec/output errors, and whether the intended video and audio streams are being published. A process still running—or a message that it is sending data—does not establish that YouTube accepted a usable feed. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder directly, updating it, and inspecting encoder errors; it does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command or flag.
  3. Check YouTube’s side of the connection. In Live Control Room, look for a preview and the stream-health or status message. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder. If there is no preview, the configured feed has not become usable in that stream session. That observation alone cannot distinguish a wrong URL or key from a protocol, encoder, account, network, or temporary service issue.
  4. Verify the protocol and server address. YouTube recommends RTMPS and supplies the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room. Use the actual URL shown for your stream rather than reconstructing it. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting specifically says to verify the rtmps protocol and server; for an SSL error, it suggests specifying port 443. Confirm your FFmpeg build and command support the protocol you selected. A generic RTMP send message does not prove that an RTMPS connection succeeded. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream and YouTube Help: Recommended encoder settings.
  5. Compare the actual encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Select bitrate using YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are using—not one universal bitrate. The page also covers supported frame rates up to 60 fps. Matching the recommendations is a useful check, not proof that a setting mismatch caused “No data.”
  6. Test the outbound connection if FFmpeg looks healthy locally. YouTube notes that a stream that looks and sounds healthy directly in the encoder can still have an outbound internet connection issue, and recommends testing connection strength. Compare the encoder’s output and health with YouTube’s status, then test the network path if the local feed appears sound. This is a possible cause, not a diagnosis.
  7. Escalate with useful, safe evidence. If the problem persists, keep the timestamp, the selected stream in Live Control Room, its visible status or error, the URL host and protocol, and relevant FFmpeg log lines. Redact the stream key from the command and logs; never send the secret credential. YouTube advises reporting persistent problems. The checks above cannot establish an account-specific cause or a current service incident.

Which encoder settings should you check?

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings page as the authority for bitrate values; the right value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check each of these against the stream FFmpeg is actually outputting:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Protocol: RTMP or YouTube’s recommended RTMPS, using the server URL shown in Live Control Room.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Confirm the output matches the mode you intend to stream; YouTube’s listed settings support up to 60 fps.
  • Bitrate: Choose from YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Keyframes and bitrate mode: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, no more than 4 seconds, and CBR.
  • Audio: Check that audio is mapped and that the codec is AAC or MP3, as listed for RTMP/RTMPS.

These settings are recommendations and compatibility checks. Don’t infer that any single mismatch explains “No data” without comparing FFmpeg’s actual output with YouTube’s preview and status.

Why “sending” and “ingested” are different

FFmpeg’s local status describes what the encoder is doing; YouTube’s preview and stream-health status show whether the platform has a usable feed for the selected stream. A missing preview narrows the immediate question to whether that session has become usable, but it does not identify which link in the chain failed. That is why the destination, logs, ingest status, settings, and outbound path should be checked separately rather than treating the running FFmpeg process as confirmation of a live stream.
