The report does not establish why this happened, whether it is a Windows bug, or whether other users will see it. The poster described it as a “ghost” process; that is their description, not an official Windows term.
What the Windows 11 report says
In a post dated August 22, 2026, an ElevenForum user said that right-clicking taskbar icons for Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Outlook 2021, then selecting actions containing “New” — such as “New window,” “New Private window,” or “New email” — seemed to launch Notepad and Notepad++ in the background. The editor windows did not appear on screen.

The poster said the processes appeared in Task Manager and wrote that the behavior “does not seem to hurt anything, and uses little or no resources.” That is the poster’s impression, not a verified safety assessment. The report is a single user’s observation and was not independently reproduced in the material available here.

What is—and is not—known about the cause
The post does not include a Windows build number, editor versions, process command lines, reproduction logs, or an explanation of what triggered the launches. It therefore cannot establish whether the behavior came from Windows, an application, a file or protocol association, an extension, or another cause. A reply from someone who did not see the behavior on their own system is not a controlled test.

There is no confirmed fix or prevalence figure for this exact symptom in the cited discussions. The available evidence does not show that it is widespread, that it is harmless in every case, or that malware or a particular Windows defect is responsible. Avoid drawing any of those conclusions from the word “ghost” alone.
How this differs from other Notepad++ taskbar reports
Other discussions describe taskbar behaviors involving Notepad++, but their triggers and symptoms differ. They do not confirm the cause of the invisible-process report.

| Reported situation | Trigger and symptom | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Invisible editor processes | Right-clicking taskbar icons for several apps and choosing an item containing “New” appeared to start background Notepad and Notepad++ processes. | The cause, a verified fix, or how often it happens. |
| New document tab request | A Notepad++ project issue opened May 25, 2022, requests that middle-clicking the taskbar icon bring up a new document tab. Its author describes the usual middle-click behavior as starting another app instance. | That middle-click behavior explains hidden processes started after choosing a right-click menu item. |
| Duplicate taskbar icon with a portable copy | A Notepad++ Community discussion describes a second icon appearing when a portable instance is opened. Replies tentatively suggest comparing the pinned executable path with the launched copy and checking multi-instance settings. | A verified repair for the invisible-process report; the portable-copy discussion itself describes a separate, inconsistently reproduced symptom. |
| Creating a text file from a context menu | A separate Windows 11 discussion distinguishes creating a text file at a selected location from opening that file in an editor. Replies discuss file associations and editor launch settings. | Why a browser or Outlook taskbar menu action might appear to start an editor process. |
What to check if you see it yourself
The reported discussion does not provide a proven troubleshooting procedure. If you encounter the same behavior, collect enough detail to distinguish a visible app launch from a process that only appears in Task Manager, and to make the report reproducible.
- Record the exact action. Note the app whose taskbar icon you right-clicked and the exact menu item selected. Record whether the menu item was “New window,” “New Private window,” “New email,” or something else.
- Check what actually started. In Task Manager, record the process names and whether they persist. Note whether a Notepad or Notepad++ window appears, whether an existing window comes to the foreground, and whether selecting another “New” item changes the result.
- Capture system details. Record the Windows 11 build, the versions of the affected apps and editors, and whether Notepad++ is installed normally or run as a portable copy. The original post did not provide these details.
- Compare repeated attempts carefully. If you test again, change one factor at a time and note the result. For example, check whether the same taskbar action behaves differently from the app’s own window or menu. A difference can help describe the symptom, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
- Report observations, not a diagnosis. Include the steps and details above when asking for help. Do not label the behavior malware or a confirmed Windows defect without evidence.
When taskbar pinning checks may be relevant
If your actual symptom is a second Notepad++ taskbar icon while opening a portable copy, the Community discussion suggests comparing the path of the pinned executable with the path of the copy you launch, and checking the application’s multi-instance settings. These are tentative checks for the duplicate-icon scenario, not established remedies for background processes appearing after a taskbar “New” action.
