1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: NAND flash is the storage medium inside SSDs, SD and microSD cards, USB drives and embedded devices, so its wafer and contract prices influence a large part of what you pay. The pass-through is never one-for-one: controllers, DRAM or host-memory buffering, packaging, testing, firmware, shipping, retailer margins, promotions, taxes, exchange rates, warranties and product positioning can soften or amplify the change. That is why an enterprise SSD can become more expensive while a consumer microSD card is still discounted.
What NAND flash is—and why its price matters
NAND flash is nonvolatile memory: it retains data without power. Storage products arrange NAND packages with a controller, firmware and supporting components into a finished device. Client and enterprise SSDs, SD cards, microSD cards, USB flash drives and many phones, tablets and embedded systems all draw on the same broad NAND manufacturing ecosystem.

A supplier can quote several different prices along that chain. A wafer price covers partially processed silicon; a spot price reflects near-term transactions; a contract price is negotiated for scheduled volume; and wholesale and retail prices include assembly, distribution and selling costs. A headline about NAND therefore does not mean every store price changes immediately or by the same percentage.

The bill of materials beyond the flash chips
- Controller: manages error correction, wear leveling, encryption and the host interface. Newer PCIe generations and high-end enterprise controllers generally cost more.
- DRAM or HMB: some SSDs use dedicated DRAM; others use the host’s memory through Host Memory Buffer (HMB). Cards and inexpensive drives may use a simpler design.
- Package, testing and firmware: NAND dies must be packaged, validated and configured for a particular performance and endurance target.
- Logistics and channel costs: freight, inventory financing, distributor and retailer margins, taxes and currency movements affect the shelf price.
- Warranty and positioning: a high-end, heavily validated product can carry a premium even when it uses similar raw NAND to a budget model.
Consequently, a 10% increase in NAND does not mechanically create a 10% increase in an SSD or card. A manufacturer may absorb the change temporarily, draw down older inventory, alter capacity, or end a promotion.

Why NAND prices move in cycles
NAND manufacturing is capital-intensive and capacity decisions are made months or years before chips reach a shop. The usual cycle has four stages:
- Weak demand and excess supply: PC, phone or data-center orders slow while previously planned factories continue producing. Inventory builds and spot and contract prices fall.
- Production discipline: suppliers cut wafer starts, idle equipment or delay capacity additions to stop losses. The lower output does not instantly remove inventory, but it reduces future supply.
- Inventory rebuilding: customers that had been running down stock return to the market. Even a modest demand recovery can absorb the reduced output quickly.
- Recovery and another correction: prices rise, manufacturers restart capacity and customers eventually order cautiously again, setting up the next oversupply.
TrendForce expected increased production and weak seasonal demand to push NAND prices down 3–8% in the fourth quarter of 2024, while enterprise SSD contract prices were forecast to rise 0–5%. In March 2025, the same analyst said production cuts begun in the fourth quarter of 2024 were starting to work and projected wafer and client-SSD prices to rise in the second quarter of 2025. These are dated market forecasts, not guarantees for every product or region.
How AI and data centers tighten the market
AI training, inference and data-serving workloads require very large, fast storage pools. Hyperscale operators place sizable enterprise-SSD orders, often under contracts that give suppliers clearer volume and better margins than fragmented retail demand. When those orders arrive during a period of restrained NAND output, enterprise buyers can consume available supply first.

Gartner’s 2024 forecast described a deeper NAND shortage through 2024 and 2025 and projected annual NAND price increases of 61% in 2024 and 4% in 2025. It also forecast NAND sales rising from $69.2 billion in 2024 to $87.1 billion in 2025. In a June 2025 update, Gartner forecast a 3% shortage from the second half of 2025 into 2026, with price increases and NAND revenue growth of 24.2% in 2026. TrendForce’s February 2026 outlook said persistent AI and data-center demand was worsening the supply-demand imbalance and increasing suppliers’ pricing power.
The forecasts use different dates, measures and assumptions, so they should not be read as a single guaranteed percentage for a consumer drive. They do explain why enterprise contracts can tighten before a shopper sees a broad retail increase.
Why an enterprise SSD, client SSD and memory card can diverge
| Segment | What drives its NAND exposure | Why its price can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise SSD | Large, scheduled purchases for servers and storage arrays | Hyperscale demand, qualification requirements and higher-margin contracts can make this the first segment to rise when supply is tight. |
| Client SSD | NAND cost plus PC and workstation demand | Interface generation, controller availability, channel inventory and retail promotions can delay or amplify a NAND move. |
| SD and microSD cards | NAND from the same broad supply chain | Consumer seasonality, speed-class binning, inventory age, brand premiums, counterfeit controls and discounts often dominate the shelf price. |
| USB flash drive | NAND, a basic controller and a small enclosure | Low-cost products can be cleared from old inventory; capacity mix and promotional pricing create large differences between models. |
Memory cards therefore can remain on sale while enterprise SSD contract prices rise. A retailer may own months-old card inventory bought at a lower cost, or a manufacturer may discount cards to defend market share. Conversely, a sudden shortage of a particular speed class or capacity can raise card prices even when the wider NAND market is flat.

What recent price signals actually show
One consumer-facing indicator moved sharply: the Federal Reserve reported in 2026 that the average price of the 20 best-selling flash drives was about 70% higher than in November 2025. That statistic covers a defined basket and comparison date; it is not a claim that every SSD, SD card or microSD card rose 70%.

How NAND becomes the price of a finished SSD
- Silicon allocation: a maker assigns wafer capacity among generations, die densities and customers.
- Die and package production: wafers are cut, tested and assembled into packages. Yield and binning determine how many chips meet each specification.
- Drive integration: an SSD maker pairs the packages with a controller, DRAM or HMB design, firmware, labels and a heatsink where required.
- Qualification and warranty: enterprise drives undergo extensive validation and carry service commitments; consumer drives may target a lower endurance tier.
- Distribution: the product passes through distributors and retailers, where freight, financing, taxes, exchange rates and promotions set the final price.
Because each stage holds inventory for a different length of time, retail prices usually lag a spot-market move. A manufacturer with inexpensive stock can keep a sale running; a distributor that must replenish immediately may raise its price first.

What to compare when buying an SSD
Price per advertised gigabyte is only the starting point. Compare usable capacity after formatting and the specifications that determine whether the drive suits your workload.
| Check | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity and price per usable gigabyte | Higher capacities often have a lower unit cost, but the usable figure is below the label. | Is the 2TB model large enough for your projects after formatting and spare area? |
| Interface | SATA, PCIe 3.0, PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 have different bandwidth and platform requirements. | Does your motherboard or laptop support the interface, and will cooling sustain its speed? |
| NAND type and endurance | Flash type, overprovisioning and firmware affect write life and sustained performance. | What TBW rating and warranty term are stated for this exact capacity? |
| Controller and DRAM/HMB | These influence latency, random I/O and behavior after the cache fills. | Is the design suitable for long writes, or mainly short bursts? |
| Host compatibility | Physical size, keying, firmware support and power limits can prevent installation. | Will the slot accept the drive’s form factor and does the system provide adequate cooling? |
| Seller authenticity | Counterfeit or relabeled flash can have the wrong capacity and endurance. | Is the serial number verifiable and is the return policy clear? |
A 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is a useful comparison point because it combines a common capacity with a mainstream interface. Compare several listings on the same day, record the warranty and TBW, and do not infer performance from capacity alone.

Best Value
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 2TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
- Bus and speed class: UHS-I and UHS-II describe the bus; U1, U3 and video speed classes describe minimum sequential-write behavior under specified conditions. Your camera, console or phone must support the bus to benefit from it.
- Application performance: A1 or A2 ratings concern small-file I/O and require host support; they do not make every workload equivalent to an SSD.
- Capacity and file system: SDHC generally covers 4GB–32GB, while SDXC covers 64GB–2TB under the standard. Host compatibility and formatting still matter.
- Endurance: continuous recording, dashcams and surveillance workloads need a card rated for sustained rewriting, not simply the highest capacity.
- Authenticity and testing: buy through a trustworthy channel, check packaging and serial information, then test the full capacity before storing irreplaceable data.
Cards are especially sensitive to binning and inventory age. Two cards with the same capacity can use different NAND grades and controllers, so a lower price is not proof of equivalent sustained write speed or longevity.
Should you buy now or wait?
Buy now when the need is immediate
Purchase when a failed drive, a work deadline or a planned migration leaves no safe alternative. Choose a capacity and endurance level that fit the workload, keep a verified backup, and compare the complete specification rather than chasing a market forecast.
Waiting can make sense for a flexible upgrade
If your current storage is healthy and you can tolerate uncertainty, monitor the exact model class for several weeks. A broad NAND decline may take time to reach retail, while a shortage can lift prices quickly. Set a target price per usable gigabyte and buy when it is met instead of trying to call the cycle’s exact bottom.
Do not assume all storage will move together
Enterprise SSD contracts can rise while client drives or microSD cards are discounted. Track the segment, interface, capacity and sales channel you actually need; a headline about AI servers is not a substitute for that comparison.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating a forecast as a guarantee: forecasts describe expected market conditions on a stated date. Demand, production cuts, currency and promotions can invalidate the percentage for a particular product.
- Equating NAND with the whole product: controller shortages, packaging, shipping and warranty costs can move independently.
- Comparing unlike prices: do not compare a one-time sale, an enterprise contract and a retail list price as if they were the same measure.
- Buying by capacity alone: verify interface, sustained-write behavior, TBW, warranty and host compatibility.
- Ignoring old inventory: a discounted card may reflect a retailer clearing stock, not a collapse in current NAND costs.
- Skipping authenticity checks: counterfeit removable media can report a false capacity and corrupt data when filled.
A practical monitoring checklist
- Write down the exact product class, capacity, interface and endurance requirement.
- Record the current price and calculate price per usable gigabyte from reputable sellers.
- Check whether a cited market figure is wafer, spot, contract, wholesale or retail, and note its date and region.
- Watch inventory and promotions for the same model rather than switching specifications mid-comparison.
- When buying, verify the serial number, run a full-capacity test on removable media and make a backup before deployment.
Bottom line
NAND flash is a major input, so its cyclical supply and demand affect storage costs, but finished prices are shaped by much more than the chip. AI-driven enterprise demand can tighten contracts first; client SSDs and memory cards may react later or move in the opposite direction because of inventories, product mix and promotions. Buy based on your required capacity, interface, endurance and authenticity, and use dated market forecasts as context—not as a promise of a specific retail percentage.
