Microsoft has confirmed a Classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 search bug: after you move a message, it can remain in search results, and clicking it may produce an error. Microsoft is working on a hotfix but has not announced when it will be available. The documented workaround temporarily disables Server Assisted Search.
What the Classic Outlook search bug does
In Microsoft’s documented reproduction, Outlook is connected to a mailbox in online mode. A search is run within a folder using “Current Folder” as the scope, then a result is dragged to an adjacent folder. The message should disappear from the results, but it can remain there; clicking the stale result can produce an error. Microsoft says changing a message’s category or marking it read or unread may also trigger the issue.

Microsoft’s notice is titled “Classic Outlook issues with service assisted search for shared mailboxes”. Despite the title, Microsoft says the behavior can be reproduced with a single mailbox; a shared mailbox is not required. The notice applies to Outlook for Microsoft 365.

How to tell whether this matches your symptoms
- The Outlook mailbox is being used in online mode.
- The search scope is “Current Folder.”
- A message is moved to an adjacent folder, but the old search result remains and may error when selected.
If your situation does not match this reproduction, Microsoft’s notice does not establish that this particular bug is the cause. It describes a Server Assisted Search results-refresh problem, not a corrupt Windows Search index, and does not provide general troubleshooting steps for other Outlook search failures.

Microsoft’s temporary workaround
Microsoft says disabling Server Assisted Search temporarily makes Outlook fall back to legacy Windows Desktop Search. Its notice specifies this registry setting:
- Registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERsoftwarepoliciesMicrosoftoffice16.0outlooksearch - DWORD name:
DisableServerAssistedSearch - Value:
1
This is Microsoft’s workaround for the documented issue, not a guaranteed fix for every search problem. Microsoft’s notice does not give instructions for reversing the setting or recommend rebuilding the Windows Search index. In a managed work environment, coordinate any registry change with your IT administrator.
