Google’s new Gemini avatar is not a toggle in the regular consumer Gemini app. Announced as generally available in Gemini Enterprise on September 24, 2026, Live Avatar pairs a talking on-screen persona with a real-time agent that Google says can interpret camera or screen input and call tools while the conversation continues. The face is the visible part; the less obvious shift is toward an agent that can perceive and act, not just speak.
What Google announced—and who can use it
Google Cloud Group Product Manager Fabien Blanc-paques announced Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar as generally available in Gemini Enterprise. Google describes US and EU endpoints and API access, with conversational video agents designed for web, mobile and interactive kiosks. The announcement does not describe Live Avatar as a feature available through a standard consumer Gemini app setting. Google Cloud’s announcement

What the avatar adds to Gemini Live
Google describes Gemini 3.8 Live as having a native speech-to-speech foundation; Live Avatar adds generated video with lip movements synchronized to speech. Its developer guide characterizes the system as a real-time, bidirectional voice-and-video model. These are product descriptions from Google, not independently benchmarked performance findings. The interface is more than a face speaking back. Google says the agent can recover when interrupted, detect languages automatically across 97 languages, and process a live camera feed or screen share alongside audio. It can also make tool or API calls in the background while the conversation continues. That combination makes the avatar a presentation layer for an agent with visual input and connected actions.

Why “sneakier” is about the agent, not a secret feature
There is no indication in Google’s announcement that the avatar was secretly switched on for ordinary Gemini users. The more consequential point is that a face can make a multimodal enterprise agent feel like a straightforward conversation, even when the system is also interpreting visual information and using connected tools.
Insurance claims intake
In a Google-published example, a customer talks through a claim and shows damage on camera while an agent team checks policy information and prepares an adjuster packet. The example illustrates a proposed workflow—conversation, visual intake and back-office actions—not proof that every deployment handles claims accurately or improves business outcomes.

Vehicle shopping
Google’s Autotrader example uses live screen highlighting and tool calls to guide a shopper through vehicle search, comparison and financing. Cox Automotive EVP and Chief Product Officer Marianne Johnson said the avatar matches natural conversation to vehicle inventory and called it a step toward “connected intelligence.” That is a customer’s description of the product’s aim, not an independent evaluation of results. Voice-only agent or video avatar?
The key choice is whether a deployment needs a visible persona and visual interaction, rather than whether an avatar is automatically better. Google’s materials establish capability differences, but do not report comparative outcome metrics.

| Option | Interaction | Visual input | Deployment surfaces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text- or voice-only agent | Text or speech, without synchronized avatar video | Not established by the presentation choice alone; visual input depends on the configured system | Not stated as a comparison in Google’s announcement |
| Live Avatar | Speech conversation with generated, synchronized avatar video | Google says the system can process live camera feeds or screen shares alongside audio | Web, mobile and interactive kiosks, according to Google |
For workflows such as claims intake or guided shopping, visual interaction may be useful when the user needs to show something or follow on-screen guidance. For an agent that only needs to answer spoken questions, a visible avatar may add little. Google has not published evidence in these materials showing which option produces better outcomes.
Prebuilt avatars, custom likenesses and consent
Google says customers can select from a curated library of prebuilt avatars. Creating a custom avatar is limited to selected, allowlisted customers and involves verification; it is not presented as an unrestricted self-service feature. The configuration guide says the deployer is responsible for securing necessary rights and consent for face and voice samples. Google’s live avatar configuration guide
Google also says generated audio and video streams include imperceptible SynthID watermarks. That is a statement about the streams’ watermarking, not a guarantee that every misuse will be prevented or that a viewer can always identify generated media. The documentation does not establish an independent validation of these controls.
What the customer examples do—and don’t—show
Google’s announcement quotes Equal AI CEO Akhilesh Damaraju saying the company handles “over a million live calls daily across nine Indian languages.” This is a customer-reported figure carried in Google’s announcement; it does not include a measurement methodology or independent audit. It should not be read as a statistic about Gemini Live Avatar’s overall adoption or performance.

Likewise, the Autotrader and insurance examples show how Google presents potential uses, not verified evidence of general business impact. Google’s announcement and developer documentation do not establish industry-wide adoption, independent safety results or comparative performance for Live Avatar.
Quick Recap
What to know before planning a deployment
- Access: The announced availability is for Gemini Enterprise, with US and EU endpoints and API access described by Google; it is not a consumer-app toggle.
- Product scope: Live Avatar is a software and API capability. Google’s materials do not establish that buyers need to purchase a particular camera, microphone, kiosk or other consumer hardware item.
- Custom likeness: Custom-avatar access is restricted, and deployers need to secure the rights and consents Google requires for submitted face and voice samples.
- Evidence: Treat the demos and customer statements as examples and attributed claims, not independent proof of accuracy, safety or business results.
