The proposed species was a marsupial relative—not a saber-toothed cat—and its reported age, near the Pliocene–Pleistocene boundary, may extend the lineage’s known survival.
What was found in Argentina?
Members of a local museum found the fossil in 2014 in a seaside cliff in Argentina’s pampas, according to Phys.org’s October 5, 2026 report. The remains include neck vertebrae, a shoulder blade, limb bones and two tail bones. No skull was recovered.

The 2026 study proposes the name Pampaluctor calibar for the animal and places it among the thylacosmilids, a family within the sparassodonts. The fossil is incomplete, so the proposed identification and its position in the family tree remain open to refinement.
Was Pampaluctor a saber-toothed cat?
No. Thylacosmilids were metatherians, a group that includes modern marsupials. “Saber-toothed” describes the shape of an animal’s long canine teeth; it does not mean that every saber-toothed predator belonged to the cat family. Because this fossil has no skull or teeth, its saber-toothed identity comes from its proposed family placement, not from fangs preserved in this specimen.

Why does the reported age matter?
The study describes the remains as dating to the end of the Pliocene or the early Pleistocene, as reported by Phys.org. That placement could make Pampaluctor one of the youngest known sparassodonts. It would extend the reported record later than the commonly cited mid- to late-Pliocene disappearance of the group.
The report does not provide a more precise numerical age, so the fossil’s timing should be kept at that broad level. Its proposed age is consequential, but it does not by itself establish exactly when the lineage disappeared or how long it persisted across South America.

How large was it, and how might it have hunted?
The study authors estimate a mass of about 100 kilograms (220 pounds) from the thigh bone, according to Phys.org. This is an estimate from incomplete fossil material, not a directly measured weight.

The neck vertebrae and robust forelimbs suggest an ambush predator that could overpower and pin prey rather than pursue it over distance. Lead author and paleontologist Eric del Campo described it as “a strong ambush hunter, not particularly graceful, relying instead on overpowering prey with brute force rather than giving chase.” That is a functional interpretation of the preserved bones, not direct evidence of a particular hunt.

Could it have lived alongside newer predators?
Phys.org reports that Pampaluctor may have coexisted with predators arriving from the north. The possibility is intriguing, but the available account does not establish direct encounters or interactions between this animal and any particular newcomer.
The same report says more than 50 sparassodont species are known and identifies a scavenging raccoon relative, estimated at about 25 kilograms (55 pounds), as the only other relatively large carnivore known from that time. Those figures are reported context, not evidence of a population count or a measured competition between species.

What would confirm its place in the family tree?
The missing skull matters because cranial and dental features can help distinguish related predators and test where a fossil belongs. Del Campo told Phys.org: “Finding dental or cranial remains would surely improve the support of Pampaluctor’s position in the [family] tree.” The bracketed wording appears in the report’s quotation.
For now, the most secure points are the recovered bones and their reported find location. The species designation, estimated size, hunting behavior and late survival date are interpretations or estimates based on the partial remains and the study’s analysis.
