Game updates can change the files, interfaces, or behavior that mods rely on, leaving a mod outdated or incompatible with a required dependency. First check the game and mod versions, then test whether the same problem occurs with mods disabled. That helps separate a mod-related issue from a problem with the base game—without risking a save through a one-size-fits-all fix.
Why did my mods stop working after an update?
A mod is built around assumptions about a particular game version, data format, interface, dependency set, or in-game behavior. A patch can change one of those assumptions. The result might be a crash, a save that no longer loads, a broken interface or visual effect, or a mod that appears enabled but does nothing.

That does not automatically mean the mod itself is defective. It may need an update from its creator, a required dependency may be missing or out of date, two mods may conflict, or a base-game file may be damaged. Larian Studios notes that game changes, dependencies, and conflicts can affect supported mods in its Baldur’s Gate 3 mod-issues guidance. Bethesda likewise warns that Skyrim mods may not work properly after a game update until their creators update them, in its Skyrim Special Edition crash guidance.

Why does my game crash after an update?
A crash is one possible sign of a mod compatibility problem, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Modded-game trouble can also show up as a save that stops loading, UI problems, or visual problems. A damaged game installation or another base-game issue can produce symptoms too.
For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s mod-issues page lists crashes, save-loading failures, and UI or visual problems among possible issues. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC file-verification instructions address a separate possibility: problems with game files. Treat the symptom as a clue to investigate, not proof that a specific mod is responsible.

How do I check whether a mod is outdated?
Compare the installed game build with the version or compatibility information on the mod’s listing. Check the mod manager or platform for an update, and verify that any required dependencies match the game and mod. If the game uses a modloader, its version or type may also need to match the selected game version.

- Minecraft with CurseForge: Check that the modloader version or type is compatible with the Minecraft version selected in the profile. CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance covers loader compatibility and logs.
Also check whether a mod requires another mod or loader, whether that requirement is installed, and whether a recent change introduced a conflict. Minecraft add-ons can have conflicts between packs; the game’s own instructions describe those cases in Minecraft Help’s pack-management guidance.

How can I tell if a mod or the game itself is broken?
Use a controlled test: record the setup, disable mods according to the game’s instructions, and try to reproduce the same problem. If it stops happening without mods, investigate the mod set, its dependencies, or a conflict. If it continues, investigate the base game and follow the publisher’s support instructions.
- Record the setup. Note the exact game version or build, platform and storefront, mod manager or loader, mod names and versions, dependencies, and the first error or symptom. Keep a recoverable copy of an unmodded save when possible; Bethesda specifically recommends keeping unmodded saves available.
- Check compatibility. Look for mod updates and confirm each mod and dependency targets the installed game build. Check loader version or type when the game uses one.
- Disable mods and repeat the test. Follow the title’s instructions rather than deleting files or changing a save at random. Larian recommends unchecking installed mods to see whether the problem persists in its Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance. Bethesda describes removing a Creation or mod and reloading as a way to check whether it is implicated in its Skyrim guidance.
- If the game works without mods, narrow down the mod set. Reintroduce only compatible mods, following the official manager or creator instructions, and test in small steps. This can help identify a mod or dependency associated with the failure; there is no universal reinstallation order.
- If the game still fails, investigate the base game. Use the publisher’s support route for your title and platform. For example, Bethesda’s Steam file-verification instructions apply to Skyrim on PC through Steam; they are not a general repair step for every game or platform.
- Contact the relevant support source. If the failure follows a mod, send its creator the game version, mod version, symptom, and relevant logs. Larian directs players to the author for player-created mod issues in its support guidance. CurseForge also requests logs for certain unresolved Minecraft errors in its troubleshooting article.
Should I roll back the game or reinstall the mods?
Neither is a universal first fix. Whether a rollback is available—and whether it is safe—depends on the game, platform, and storefront. Consult the publisher and platform instructions before attempting one. Reinstalling or changing load order may also fail to address the cause if the mod needs an author update, a dependency is missing, or the base-game files are damaged.

Choose the next step based on what the test shows: whether the mod is supported through the game’s official manager or is third-party, whether the mod and dependencies target your installed build, whether the problem remains with mods disabled, and which platform or storefront you use. If a multiplayer session or cross-platform save is involved, check that title’s specific rules before changing the setup.
What changes in multiplayer?
Mod compatibility rules can extend to everyone in a session. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says all multiplayer participants need the same mods and versions; see its supported-mods guidance. Do not assume this rule applies to every game: check the title’s own multiplayer and cross-platform requirements before adjusting anyone’s mod list.
