For a computer that will handle machine learning, video editing, and 3D work, 32 GB of system RAM is a practical starting point. It aligns with Blender’s recommendation and Adobe’s guidance for Premiere projects at 4K and above. It is not a guarantee that every large project will fit: datasets, complex scenes, multiple open applications, and background tasks can all raise memory use.
Sixteen GB can suit lighter or more focused workloads, but machine learning has an extra consideration: system RAM and GPU memory (VRAM) are different resources. Check both against the work you plan to do.

How much RAM should you get?
| System RAM | Practical fit |
|---|---|
| 16 GB | A possible fit for lighter or narrower workloads, such as HD editing or some 3D work. It leaves less room for large projects and running demanding applications together. |
| 32 GB | A flexible mixed-use starting point. Blender recommends 32 GB, and Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for Premiere editing at 4K and higher. |
| More than 32 GB | Consider it for especially large datasets, complex scenes, heavier editing projects, or several demanding applications running at once. The amount depends on the actual workload; there is no single higher capacity established for all users. |
This is a practical synthesis of published software requirements, not a performance benchmark or a promise that a given project will run smoothly. Minimum requirements are not the same as a comfortable working configuration, and requirements vary by software version and workload.

It can be a reasonable target for HD editing according to Adobe’s Premiere requirements. For Premiere version 26, Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum, recommends 16 GB for HD, and recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. The page covers versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, and 26.5 and was updated September 9, 2026. See Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements.

Adobe’s page lists 16 GB of unified memory as the recommendation for Apple silicon. Unified memory is shared by the processor and other system components; it is not a conventional, separately upgradeable RAM module. Check the recommendation for your platform and the version of Premiere you use.
Do you need 32 GB of RAM for Blender or Maya?
Blender
The Blender Foundation lists 8 GB as the minimum and 32 GB as the recommended system RAM. That makes 32 GB a sensible target for Blender, particularly if your work involves more than basic scenes. The recommendation is a starting point, not a guarantee for every scene. Check Blender’s system requirements.

Maya
Autodesk’s Maya 2027 requirements, dated March 25, 2026, list 8 GB minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. That is lower than Blender’s published recommendation, but neither figure says that every scene or multitasking setup will have the same needs. Scene complexity and the number of applications open can increase actual memory use. See Autodesk’s Maya 2027 system requirements.

For machine learning, do you need more RAM or more VRAM?
They solve different problems. System RAM supports host-side work such as preparing and loading data. GPU memory, often called VRAM, is used by GPU workloads. Having more system RAM does not substitute for having enough GPU memory for a model or computation that must fit on the GPU.

- [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
- [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
- [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
- [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
- [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).
PyTorch notes that data-loading choices can affect CPU memory use: additional data-loader workers and prefetched batches can consume more host memory. Increasing the worker count is therefore not automatically better; tune workers and prefetching for your system and workload. Read PyTorch’s data-loading optimization guidance.
GPU memory can be a constraint even when system RAM is ample. In a 2024 PyTorch example about fine-tuning a 7B model, the setup used an NVIDIA T4 with 16 GB of GPU memory. That is one specific example, not a universal system-RAM or VRAM requirement for 7B models or machine learning generally. See PyTorch’s fine-tuning example. For GPU workloads, PyTorch also documents how to inspect CUDA memory use: Understanding CUDA Memory Usage.

What else should you check before upgrading?
Choose capacity for the work you actually do, then confirm that your computer can use the memory you plan to buy. Before ordering a desktop kit or considering a laptop upgrade, check:
- Supported memory generation and form factor for your computer.
- Maximum supported capacity and available slots.
- Whether the memory is replaceable or upgradeable at all.
- Whether the machine uses Apple silicon unified memory rather than conventional upgradeable DIMMs.
- Your software’s requirements for the version and platform you use.
- GPU memory and storage requirements as well as system RAM; adequate RAM alone cannot address every performance bottleneck.
Do not assume that a kit is compatible based only on its capacity. Consult the computer or motherboard specifications before choosing a specific kit.
