Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a laptop around where your AI workloads will run. If you mainly write code, explore data, and send jobs to cloud or remote machines, 16 GB of RAM can handle lighter work and 32 GB offers more breathing room; you may not need a dedicated GPU. For local GPU work, compare the exact GPU’s VRAM, software compatibility, and cooling—not just its product-family name. For demanding local training or fine-tuning, the memory requirement can quickly exceed what a laptop can provide.
Start with what you plan to run locally
“AI development” can mean anything from editing Python files to fine-tuning a model. Those activities put very different demands on a laptop. Decide whether the laptop will do the computation or mainly prepare and submit work to another machine.

| Workflow | System RAM | GPU guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coding, notebooks, data exploration, and remote training | 16 GB may work for lighter experiments; 32 GB leaves more room for datasets, containers, and multitasking. | A dedicated laptop GPU may not be necessary if computation runs remotely. | Confirm access to the remote environment, network availability, and local tooling requirements. |
| Local small-model inference and basic experiments | 32 GB is preferable if running containers and several development tools alongside experiments. | Compare actual VRAM with the model’s precision, quantization, and context needs. | Model weights are only part of memory use; configuration matters. |
| Local training, image generation, computer vision, or fine-tuning | 32 GB is a useful starting point; larger datasets and heavier multitasking may benefit from more. | Dell recommends at least 12 GB of video memory for these local workflows, but training or fine-tuning may require more. | Verify the specific GPU, its laptop power and cooling implementation, and framework support. |
| Larger-model fine-tuning or substantial research workloads | Both system memory and compute may constrain a laptop. | Full fine-tuning can exceed laptop GPU memory; LoRA, QLoRA, or remote compute can change the requirement. | Size the exact model, method, precision, sequence length, and batch size before buying. |
Dell’s 12 GB VRAM figure is manufacturer guidance, not a universal threshold or guarantee that a particular workload will fit. See Dell’s AI laptop guidance.

System RAM is used by the operating system, notebooks, development tools, containers, datasets, and applications running alongside your work. GPU VRAM holds data needed by the graphics processor, including model and workload data during accelerated operations. More system RAM does not make a model fit in a GPU whose VRAM is insufficient.

For a general local-development machine, 32 GB of system RAM is a practical target; 16 GB can be enough for lighter experimentation. Lenovo recommends considering 32 GB or more for larger datasets and involved workflows. NVIDIA AI Workbench lists 16 GB as a minimum and 32 GB as recommended for its local installation—those figures describe that product’s listed setup, not every AI workload. See NVIDIA AI Workbench’s support matrix and Lenovo’s AI laptop guidance.
Estimate GPU memory from the model and method
Parameter count is a useful clue, not a complete VRAM calculator. Precision, quantization, context length, batch size, and the work being done all affect memory. NVIDIA’s NIM documentation gives rough GPU-memory examples of about 15 GB for Llama 8B and about 131 GB for Llama 70B, while warning that actual requirements can be lower or higher depending on hardware and configuration. These are configuration-specific guidelines, not fit guarantees. See NVIDIA NIM for LLMs, version 1.7.0.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

Inference and training are not equivalent memory workloads. NVIDIA’s 2025 rule-of-thumb estimate puts training a 7-billion-parameter FP16 model at about 28 GB, including optimizer and overhead assumptions. A Lenovo Press table estimates 7B fine-tuning at 67 GB for full 16-bit fine-tuning, 15 GB for 16-bit LoRA, and 5 GB for 4-bit QLoRA. These are estimates for the methods and configurations named, not universal minimums. See NVIDIA’s training-memory explanation and Lenovo Press’s LoRA and QLoRA guide.

Check software support before paying for a GPU
A GPU only helps when your intended software stack can use it. Check the exact laptop GPU against the operating system, drivers, framework, and acceleration or container stack you plan to use. Configurations within one laptop family can differ, so verify the exact SKU rather than assuming every listing has the same GPU or memory.
A dedicated GPU is not inherently required for every development workflow. NVIDIA states that “AI Workbench does not require a GPU to work,” specifically referring to AI Workbench. That does not mean every local model or accelerated workload can run without one. NVIDIA’s support matrix also lists substantial storage needs for its environments: for example, a 36 GB PyTorch container and about 41 GB total in its Windows Docker Desktop example. Actual storage use depends on the operating system, runtime, containers, datasets, and model files.

Account for laptop power, cooling, and storage
Desktop GPU specifications do not tell the whole story about a laptop. Sustained AI workloads can produce heat and consume significant power, so cooling and the laptop’s power limits affect practical performance. Heavy local compute can also reduce battery life. Consider whether the machine can sustain the workloads you expect, alongside portability, weight, and battery priorities.
Leave SSD capacity for environments and artifacts, not just source code. Containers, model files, datasets, and project files can occupy substantial space; NVIDIA’s listed container examples illustrate that a development environment alone can take tens of gigabytes.

Use this checklist to compare laptop configurations
- RAM: Is the installed system memory enough for your tools and datasets, and can it be upgraded?
- GPU and VRAM: What exact GPU and VRAM does this SKU include? Do not rely on the GPU family name alone.
- Compatibility: Does the GPU work with your intended operating system, drivers, framework, and acceleration stack?
- Sustained operation: Can the laptop’s cooling and power limits support long workloads?
- Storage: Is the SSD large enough for containers, models, datasets, and project files?
- Portability trade-offs: Are the weight and battery implications acceptable for how you will use the laptop?
- Exact configuration: Does the listing match the RAM and GPU configuration you intend to buy?
When remote GPUs are the better fit
If your intended models or fine-tuning methods exceed a laptop’s VRAM, remote compute can let the laptop serve as a development workstation rather than the machine doing the heavy computation. This also makes sense when you mostly code, manage environments, and submit jobs remotely. Keep enough local RAM and storage for your tools and data workflow, and confirm that the remote system, network access, and project setup meet your needs.
