Start by confirming whether the defaulted loan is federal or private, then resolve it through the appropriate lender or federal program. Afterward, check your credit reports for accurate updates and build a positive record with affordable, on-time payments. Federal loan rehabilitation may remove the default notation; consolidation and private-loan arrangements can have different credit-report consequences.
First, confirm the loan type and status
Federal and private student loans do not share the same default rules or resolution options. Federal Student Aid says federal loans generally enter default after 270 days without a required payment. Check your account at StudentAid.gov and contact the servicer to confirm the status and available options.

For defaulted Department of Education loans, the MyEdDebt.ed.gov portal may provide account information and resolution options. It uses credentials separate from StudentAid.gov. Some commercially held Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans may instead be handled by a guaranty agency.

For a private student loan, contact the lender or servicer, ask for proof of the debt, and discuss available payment arrangements. Private collectors generally do not have the federal government’s tax-offset or administrative wage-garnishment powers, though they may sue to collect. Applicable state law and your circumstances affect what can happen.

Choose an appropriate route out of federal default
Federal Student Aid identifies rehabilitation, consolidation, repayment agreements, and paying in full as possible routes, depending on eligibility and circumstances. They are not interchangeable: compare the likely payment, total balance, timing, credit-report treatment, and any effect on access to federal benefits or repayment plans before choosing.
| Option | Timing and requirements | Credit-report effect | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rehabilitation | Direct Loan and FFEL borrowers generally make nine qualifying payments within ten consecutive months. Perkins Loan rules differ. | After the ninth qualifying payment, the Department asks credit reporting agencies to remove the default notation. Earlier late payments may remain. | Can help with the default notation, but requires completing the payment agreement. |
| Consolidation | Can be faster for eligible federal borrowers; eligibility and conditions depend on the account. | The default history may remain on the credit report. | Interest capitalization and collection costs may increase the balance. |
| Repayment agreement | Terms depend on the borrower’s account and ability to pay. | Repayment does not necessarily remove the default notation. | Ask the Department or servicer what the agreement changes and what it does not. |
| Paying in full | Requires paying the account balance and applicable amounts owed. | Payment does not necessarily remove the default notation. | Suitability depends on whether paying the amount is feasible. |
How rehabilitation payments are set
Under the standard rehabilitation formula, the monthly payment is 15% of annual discretionary income divided by 12. If that amount is unaffordable, provide income-and-expense information to request an alternative amount. Confirm the proposed payment and agreement terms before committing.

Rehabilitation can remove the default notation, but it does not erase the entire payment history. Earlier delinquencies can remain. Federal Student Aid says a consolidated default and late payments before default may remain on credit history for up to 10 years in the context described in its default guidance. That is distinct from the CFPB’s general description that negative information may be reported for up to seven years; the applicable period depends on the information and circumstances.

For federal loans once you leave default, review repayment options that fit your income. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends considering income-driven repayment and using the Education Department’s Loan Simulator. If your income or household size changes, ask your servicer to reevaluate your payment. Deferment or forbearance may help in some situations, but understand potential interest and other program consequences before pausing payments.

For private loans, ask the lender or servicer about payment arrangements early if you cannot afford the current amount. Get any agreement and its terms in writing; private-loan options depend on the contract and applicable law.
Check your credit reports and dispute errors
Use the official AnnualCreditReport.com route to review your reports. Requesting your own report does not hurt your credit score. Check account ownership, balances, status, duplicate entries, and payment history. A federal loan that defaulted may appear in addition to earlier reporting by a servicer, so more than one entry can appear; inspect the details before deciding whether anything is wrong.

If information is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute it with both the credit reporting company and the company that furnished the information. Disputes are free. CFPB guidance also notes that through December 31, 2026, consumers can obtain six additional free Equifax credit reports per 12-month period; that temporary allowance has a stated end date.

Build positive credit history without adding unnecessary risk
- Pay bills on time. Set reminders or automatic payments only if you can keep enough money in the payment account.
- Avoid applying for a lot of credit in a short period. Each new account can add another bill to manage.
- Keep credit-card balances well below their limits. You do not need to carry a balance or pay interest to build credit; paying the statement balance in full can avoid finance charges.
- Consider a secured card only if it is affordable and appropriate. Compare the deposit, fees, interest rate, and payment terms first. It is optional, not a required purchase or a shortcut.
Payday loans, prepaid cards, and debit-card spending do not establish the same repayment history as credit accounts. Avoid taking on expensive or unsuitable debt just to try to improve a score. Scores vary by scoring model and report data, so no particular increase or recovery date can be promised. As the CFPB puts it, “There are no shortcuts or secrets.”

Get help through official or nonprofit channels
You do not need to pay a company to resolve federal student-loan default. Use official Department of Education channels and be cautious of companies that charge enrollment, subscription, or maintenance fees for default-resolution help.
If budgeting, debt management, or report review is difficult, the CFPB identifies the National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Financial Counseling Association of America as places to start looking for credit counselors. Ask about services and costs before enrolling.
