You can describe what you want instead of recalling an exact filename or settings label—but the feature is an AI-assisted search interface, not a chatbot replacing Windows Search, and Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that Search is fixed for everyone.
What changed in Windows Search?
Improved Windows Search uses semantic indexing alongside traditional indexing. That lets you search with a description of a file or a request in everyday language, rather than relying only on exact filenames or words in a document. Microsoft’s example query is “find images of bridges at sunset on my PC.” It also describes searching for a setting by explaining what you want, such as making the screen dark or connecting a device.

Microsoft says the improved experience appears in File Explorer, the taskbar Search box, and Settings. The company’s Windows Insider Blog described the aim this way: “You no longer need to remember file names, exact words in file content, or settings names.”

Is Windows Search now a chatbot?
Not exactly. The built-in Windows Search experience can interpret natural-language queries, but Microsoft describes it as improved search—not as a conversational chatbot that replaces Search. Search results still help you find files or settings; the key change is that you can describe them more flexibly.

There is also a separate file-search feature in the Copilot app on Windows. In an August 2025 announcement, Microsoft described using that app to find and open files and ask questions about them, with configurable access permissions. That Copilot experience should not be confused with Search in File Explorer, the taskbar, or Settings.
Which PCs can use improved Windows Search?
Microsoft’s current support documentation lists Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel processors. This is not a feature documented for every Windows 11 PC. Availability can vary by device and market, and update timing can vary as well. Microsoft’s January 2025 preview began more narrowly, on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs; later documentation broadened the listed processor platforms and describes cloud-stored photos and files appearing alongside local results.
Microsoft says the feature is optimized for simplified Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Its Windows guidance is written for the U.S. market and cautions that features and availability can vary by region.

What can it find, and what needs to be indexed?
Microsoft lists these supported document formats: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, and .xlsx. Supported image formats are .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, and .ico. The list describes documented formats; it does not guarantee that every query will return the intended result.
Search depends in part on indexed locations. To review them, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Searching Windows. Microsoft says you can select Enhanced to index the entire PC. It recommends plugging in a Copilot+ PC while initial indexing completes; it does not give a fixed completion time.
Microsoft’s current support guidance says cloud-stored photos and files can appear alongside local results. What is available to search may still depend on the device, location, file type, language, and rollout status.

How to try a natural-language search
- Check your PC: Confirm that it is a Copilot+ PC. Microsoft lists Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs for improved Windows Search.
- Choose where to search: Try File Explorer, the taskbar Search box, or Settings. For example, describe a photo’s contents or phrase a settings request in your own words.
- Review indexed locations: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Searching Windows and check the indexing options. Turn on Enhanced if you want Windows to index the whole PC.
- Allow indexing to complete: Microsoft recommends keeping the PC plugged in during initial indexing. No specific indexing duration is promised.
- Check the result’s scope: If a file does not appear, consider whether its location is indexed and whether its format and language are among those Microsoft lists. Also check whether the feature has reached your device and region.
Does this mean Microsoft has fixed Windows Search?
It is a meaningful capability improvement: semantic search can make it easier to find a file when you remember what it shows or contains, rather than its exact name. But the official material describes features and supported configurations, not an independent search-quality study or a comparative benchmark showing that results are universally more accurate or faster. Microsoft’s figure of more than 40 trillion operations per second refers to the NPU capability of Copilot+ PCs; it is not a measurement of Search speed or accuracy.
So “fixed” is too broad. The improvement addresses one frustrating limitation—having to remember precise names or terms—but it is limited to compatible Copilot+ PCs and remains subject to indexing, file-type, language, regional, and rollout factors. It does not establish that every Windows Search problem has been resolved.
Should you buy a Copilot+ PC for this feature?
Not solely on the evidence Microsoft has published about Search. Ordinary Windows Search remains available beyond Copilot+ PCs, while this enhanced feature is specifically documented for Copilot+ hardware. If natural-language file search is important to you, verify that a particular computer is a Copilot+ PC and check its current specifications and regional availability before buying. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that upgrading is worthwhile for every user.
