Sonos Ace Ultra: What’s New Over the Original Ace—and Who Should Buy It?

The Sonos Ace Ultra is a $449 over-ear headphone built to do more than play Bluetooth audio: its headline upgrade is the ability to hand off TV sound from compatible Sonos home audio to the headphones. It also adds adaptive noise control, more claimed battery life, and a redesigned driver assembly. Those changes make it a more capable Sonos-system companion, but they do not automatically make it the right upgrade for every original Ace owner—or the best choice if music listening and compact travel are your priorities.

The title’s “hands-on” video could not be verified, so there is no basis to attribute particular tests or conclusions to its presenter. The comparison below draws on Sonos product information and findings attributed to independent reviewers.

What the Ace Ultra changes

The original Sonos Ace was a standalone premium headphone. The Ultra retains that role while adding a closer connection to Sonos home audio. Sonos CEO Tom Conrad told TechRadar that the original Ace lacked the platform needed for the newer system connection, which required Wi-Fi performance and secure credential storage. The change is therefore more than a new setting in the app: the Ultra was designed to support a different kind of connection to the home system.

The microphone count alone does not establish call quality, and a larger count is not a substitute for a direct listening comparison.

Why Sonos-system owners may care most

The Ultra’s distinctive use is TV listening: compatible Sonos home audio can send film or programme sound to the headphones, then return it to the home speaker. What Hi-Fi? describes initiating the transfer in the Sonos app by holding the headphones’ Content Key, with the audio moving from a Beam (Gen 2) to the Ultra and back. Tom’s Guide likewise describes Bluetooth use away from home alongside direct Wi-Fi linking into a Sonos system for TV audio.

Sonos compatibility depends on software and rollout. Check the current support information in the Sonos app or with Sonos before assuming a particular speaker or soundbar supports the handoff. Do not treat a review’s device list as a permanent, exhaustive compatibility list.

Movies, spatial audio and TrueCinema

What Hi-Fi? describes TrueCinema as room calibration intended to tailor spatial movie listening to the room. TechRadar praised the Ultra’s movie experience and ecosystem functions in its review. These are reviewer assessments rather than a controlled consensus or a guarantee that every film, service, room, or Sonos setup will produce the same result.

For a household that already uses compatible Sonos home audio, being able to switch between shared speaker playback and private headphone listening can be more meaningful than another incremental Bluetooth feature. Tom’s Guide found the ecosystem functions more valuable to existing Sonos households and less compelling to people without Sonos home gear.

Standalone listening: what the specs promise, and what reviews say

Outside the home system, the Ultra works as wireless headphones and also offers USB-C and 3.5 mm connections. Sonos advertises Dolby Atmos, spatial audio, dynamic head tracking, Aware Mode, and Adaptive ANC and EQ. The product page lists a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable in the box, along with the travel case; the supplied cables do not need to be bought separately unless a replacement or different cable is needed.

Sonos lists a US price of $449 and claims up to 35 hours of listening with ANC enabled. It also claims that a three-minute charge can provide up to three hours of playback. These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified runtime results in the cited reviews. Sonos’s phrase “Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace” is also a product-page claim, not a universal measured result across environments.

TechRadar says its reviewer tested the Ultra for about two weeks, including music, Dolby Atmos films, TV audio transfer, and comparisons with the original Ace and competitors. That reviewer praised the design, movie use, ecosystem features, and value relative to the original, but noted that some rivals can have an edge in sound quality and fold more compactly for travel. Those judgments are one publication’s review, not a lab-wide ranking. What Hi-Fi? and Tom’s Guide also discuss the Ultra’s ecosystem and movie appeal; none of the cited material establishes a controlled cross-laboratory comparison.

Should an original Ace owner upgrade?

“I already have Ace…what’s actually different?” is a useful question posed in the Sonos Community post. The practical answer turns on what you want the headphones to do, not just the new model’s feature count.

  • Consider the Ultra if you want TV-audio handoff with compatible Sonos equipment, value adaptive noise control and EQ, or want the newer model’s higher manufacturer-claimed ANC-on battery figure.
  • Keep the Ace if its current performance meets your needs and you would not use the Ultra’s Sonos home-audio connection. The cited material does not establish that every Ultra upgrade feature will make a noticeable difference to every listener.
  • Compare alternatives if music sound quality, fold-flat travel size, or price matters more than Sonos integration. TechRadar specifically says some rivals can sound better or fold more compactly, while the other reviews emphasize the Ultra’s ecosystem value.

The original Ace debuted as Sonos’s first headphone, as described in the company’s Ace announcement. For the Ultra, the strongest upgrade case is not simply “newer is better”; it is that the headphones now play a different role in a compatible Sonos home.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm compatibility: check that your Sonos system and software support headphone audio transfer. Feature availability and supported products can change.
  2. Decide how you will listen: separate the value of Bluetooth travel use from the value of home TV handoff. If the latter is irrelevant, the Ultra’s defining ecosystem change may matter less.
  3. Check the current price and included items: Sonos’s US listing showed $449 and included the headphones, travel case, two cables, and setup/legal information when cited. Price, stock, and included details are time-sensitive.
  4. Weigh music and portability against movie use: independent reviewers praise the cinema and ecosystem experience but advise comparing sound quality and folding design with alternatives.
