There is no reliable seconds-behind figure that applies to every service. As a viewer, choose a low-latency mode if your provider offers one; it can make playback less smooth or limit features. Broadcasters reduce delay by designing the entire delivery workflow for low latency.
Why your stream is behind the live event
“Live” describes a broadcast, not necessarily a frame arriving at your device at the same moment it was captured. Between the field and your screen, the signal passes through production and encoding, is packaged for delivery, travels across networks and is buffered by the player. Delay can accumulate at several stages, so the total depends on the service’s end-to-end design and your playback path.

Many streams use segment-based delivery formats such as HLS or DASH. The stream is divided into media segments, which must be made available and retrieved before playback. Players also keep some media in reserve so a brief network fluctuation is less likely to interrupt the picture. That reserve can help playback stay smooth while leaving the stream farther behind the event. YouTube’s documentation says HLS and DASH ingestion generally have greater latency than RTMP ingestion.
Delay is not the same as buffering
A stream can play continuously and still be behind the action because of the time required by its broadcast and delivery pipeline. Buffering means playback has paused or stalled, often because the device or connection cannot keep up with the media being delivered. Improving a local connection may help with those stalls, but it does not by itself remove delay already introduced upstream by the broadcaster or streaming service.

What viewers can do to reduce delay
Look for a low-latency or live-latency option in the service’s playback or broadcast settings. The available controls differ by provider. YouTube documents three broadcast latency preferences—normal, low and ultra-low—and says lower-latency choices can affect playback smoothness.
- Choose low latency if seeing the action sooner matters more than having the most resilient playback.
- Check the feature trade-offs. On YouTube, ultra-low latency does not support closed captions or resolutions above 1080p. Other services may impose different limits.
- If the video stalls, treat that as a separate playback or network problem. A more stable connection may reduce interruptions, but it is not a guaranteed fix for the stream’s inherent event-to-screen delay.
Lower latency means the player has less time to absorb network variation. A setting that reduces the gap can therefore make interruptions more noticeable on an unstable connection. If you prefer uninterrupted playback, a higher-latency mode may be the better choice.

How broadcasters and streaming services lower latency
Reducing delay is an end-to-end engineering choice, not a switch a viewer can apply to any stream. The production system, ingest method, packaging, delivery network and player must work together at the intended latency. Changing only one part may not achieve the target if other stages still introduce delay.
Choose an ingest and delivery workflow suited to the target
YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ultra-low-latency ingestion, while HLS and DASH ingestion are not suitable for its ultra-low-latency mode. That is guidance for YouTube’s ingest options, not a universal ranking that overrides the design of every provider’s system.

Use low-latency HLS across the delivery path
Apple’s Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) is an extension intended to reduce video latency over public networks while retaining scalable delivery. It uses partial media segments and coordinated playlist and delivery behavior, including playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints and rendition reports. Production tools, delivery systems and players need the corresponding support; adopting a format name alone is not enough.
Apple’s HLS authoring specification recommends a one-second Part Target Duration, requires that duration to be at least the expected 95th-percentile round-trip time, and requires PART-HOLD-BACK to be at least three times the Part Target Duration. These are authoring constraints for an LL-HLS workflow—not a promise that the complete broadcast will reach viewers in one second.

What “under 10 seconds” means
The Internet Engineering Task Force’s 2022 RFC 9317 defines low-latency live delivery in terms of a glass-to-glass delay target under 10 seconds. “Glass to glass” refers to the path from capture at the source to display on the viewer’s screen. The figure is a technical target used to describe a class of live delivery, not a measurement of every sports stream or a guarantee from any particular provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo know how far behind a specific broadcast is, it must be measured for that event, service and playback path. A general claim that all sports streams are a particular number of seconds late is not supported by a single standard figure.

The trade-offs of lowering latency
With less time buffered, playback is more exposed to transient network problems. The IETF also notes that low-latency delivery can involve trade-offs in cost, quality, adaptive-bitrate behavior and resolution choices. The practical balance depends on the audience, network conditions and service design: a broadcaster may value an earlier picture, broad compatibility or fewer interruptions differently.
For viewers, the decision is simpler: use a lower-latency setting when immediacy matters, and switch back if playback stability, captions or resolution become more important. For operators, the target must be supported throughout the production and delivery chain rather than treated as a player-only setting.
