If you want to read books without opening your phone, choose a dedicated e-reader with a simple, reading-focused interface. For novels and other text-first reading, start with a monochrome E Ink model; consider color for comics and illustrated books, a larger screen for a roomier page, or Android e-paper only if access to multiple reading apps matters more than keeping the device limited.
What an e-reader changes—and what it does not
A dedicated e-reader separates book reading from the calls, messages, feeds, and other apps competing for attention on a general-purpose phone. It can make reading feel more contained, but no device can guarantee that you will stay focused; a reader with app access can still offer plenty of distractions.

E Ink also differs technically from a typical phone screen. Kobo describes its displays as non-emissive and visible in ambient light, with an integrated front light illuminating the screen from the front. That is a display distinction, not proof of a medical benefit or a guarantee of less eye strain. Kobo’s explanation of E Ink and front lighting

Mostly novels and text: choose monochrome
For novels, nonfiction, and other text-first books, a monochrome E Ink screen is the straightforward starting point. You avoid paying for color you may rarely use, while getting a display designed around reading. A compact 6-inch reader is easier to carry; a 7-inch screen gives the page more room.

Comics and illustrated books: consider color
Color E Ink can show book covers, comics, and illustrations in color. Its resolution and color appearance vary by model; on the BOOX Go Color 7 (Gen II), the manufacturer specifies 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. If color is central to your reading, compare the exact device rather than assuming every color e-reader renders images alike.
Buttons and lighting: decide how you want to read
Physical page-turn buttons can be useful if you prefer not to tap the screen to advance. An adjustable front light helps you read when ambient light is insufficient; some Kobo models also offer ComfortLight PRO. Check the individual model for lighting controls, buttons, waterproofing, and other physical features rather than assuming they are standard.

Decide whether app flexibility helps or hurts
A limited reader keeps the device focused
If your goal is to keep reading separate from phone habits, a dedicated store-and-reading interface is a feature, not a shortcoming. A more limited device gives you fewer reasons to switch from a book to unrelated apps.
Android can consolidate reading apps—and add distractions
BOOX’s Go 7 series runs Android and offers access to apps, which may let you bring multiple reading services onto one e-paper device. The same flexibility can also make news and other apps available, reintroducing some of the interruptions you wanted to leave behind. Choose it for app access only if you are comfortable managing that trade-off.

Check your library and book sources before buying
Library borrowing depends on both the service and your location. Kobo says readers can sync books borrowed through Libby where the library uses OverDrive. Confirm that your own library uses a compatible service and that the exact e-reader supports the way you borrow before purchasing. Kobo’s Libby information
