Check whether the TV responds, compare its Home screen with the connected device, then work through the relevant steps below before considering a reset or repair.
First, identify what is not working
Separate a no-power problem from a picture, sound, input, or source problem. If the TV responds to its physical power button or shows a status light, it may be on even if the screen is black. A status light is not present on every model, so its absence alone does not prove the TV has no power.

- No apparent power: Check the power connection and outlet, then use the manufacturer’s model-specific no-power instructions. LG and TCL treat power checks separately from picture and source troubleshooting; Roku also has a dedicated no-power guide.
- TV responds, but there is no picture or sound: Continue with the input and source checks below.
- Picture works but sound does not, or vice versa: Note which symptom remains and whether it occurs on every source. That comparison helps distinguish a source-specific issue from a TV-wide one.

- Press Input or Source on the remote and select the input actually used by the device, such as the correct HDMI port, Live TV, or antenna.
- Make sure the cable box, game console, streaming device, or other connected equipment is powered on.
- Try the TV’s Home screen, a different app or channel, or another input.
If the Home screen or another source appears, the TV’s display is working at least for that screen; focus on the source that fails, its signal, or its connection. If one HDMI device fails but another input works, troubleshoot that device and its connection rather than treating the symptom as proof of a complete TV display failure. Restart the TV and connected device
A power cycle can clear a temporary connection or software state, though it is not a guaranteed fix for hardware trouble. TCL recommends this sequence for a TV that appears to be on but has no picture or sound:
- Turn off the TV and the connected source device.
- Unplug both from power and leave them unplugged for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect them and turn them on.
- Select the correct TV input again.
Follow any different model-specific instructions from your TV or device maker.

When the problem is limited to HDMI
Try these checks only when an HDMI-connected device is part of the problem. They help isolate a cable, port, source device, or intermediate connection; they will not fix a blank TV menu or an internal TV fault.

- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Test with a known-good HDMI cable if one is available; borrowing one is a practical way to check before buying.
- Temporarily connect the source directly to the TV, bypassing receivers, switches, adapters, or other intermediate devices.
- If possible, test the source on another working display, or test a different source device on the TV.
If these comparisons point to the source or its connection, continue troubleshooting that equipment. TCL’s HDMI and source guidance describes this kind of isolation.

When to reset—and when to stop troubleshooting
Factory reset is a late step
Consider a factory reset only after the power, input, restart, and relevant connection checks fail. The menu path differs among Roku TV, Google TV, Fire TV, and other platforms, and a reset can remove settings. Use the instructions for your exact model rather than a generic button sequence. TCL also places reset after the other troubleshooting steps in its TV-on-but-no-picture-or-sound guidance.
Contact support or a qualified repair service
If the Home screen never appears, or the screen stays blank across sources after the checks, contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair service. These symptoms do not identify one specific failed component, so avoid opening the set as a general consumer repair step.

Unplug the TV if there are signs of danger
Unplug it immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning odor, excessive heat, a damaged power cord, or physical damage. Do not continue testing a TV with these warning signs.

Quick diagnosis by symptom
