A delisting normally stops new sales; it does not automatically delete a game you already bought or claimed. Your continued access depends on what you purchased, the platform account that holds the entitlement, whether the game can run offline, and whether required servers or authentication remain available. A disc can preserve the software that was shipped, but it cannot recreate a closed server or a revoked account license.
What a delisting actually is
“Delisted” usually means that a game has been removed from a digital storefront and cannot be purchased there by new customers. It is different from deleting every existing copy. Epic Games Store support puts the distinction plainly: “When a game is delisted from the Epic Games Store it can no longer be purchased, but if you already own or claimed it, you keep access to it in your library.” Sega used the same approach in a November 2025 notice for selected Sega Classics titles: new purchases would end, while owned games would remain in customers’ libraries and could still be downloaded and played.

That library entitlement is not the same thing as an unconditional promise that the game will work forever. A platform can still require an account, a launcher, a license check, downloadable content, or a publisher-operated service. The practical question is therefore not simply “Was it delisted?” but “Which parts of this particular game still have to function for me to play it?”

A commercial game is a bundle of rights, not just a program. The publisher may need separate permissions for music recordings and compositions, sports leagues and player rosters, brands and logos, actors’ likenesses, fictional characters, distribution territories, and online services. Each permission can have its own term, territory, renewal fee, and restrictions.

Expired or non-renewable music rights
Music is a common trigger because a soundtrack can contain many separate agreements. In a May 12, 2017 report, Game Developer said Remedy’s Alan Wake was scheduled for removal because music licenses were expiring. Remedy considered removing every affected track too complex, so the complete game was taken off sale instead of being patched song by song. During that 2017 delisting weekend, Remedy offered Alan Wake, its downloadable content, and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare at a 90 percent discount; the original game was scheduled for storefront removal on May 15, 2017.
Rights that expire one component at a time
A publisher does not always have to remove the whole title when one licensed element changes. Ubisoft’s notices for Rocksmith 2014 list dated removals for individual songs. That demonstrates a staged model: a game can remain on sale while particular tracks leave, provided the publisher can update the product and its licensing allows that treatment. The result may be a smaller soundtrack, delisted downloadable songs, or a replacement edition rather than a total storefront disappearance.
Brand, likeness, roster, publishing, and distribution terms
The same logic applies to a car manufacturer’s trademark, an athlete’s likeness, a sports league’s roster, a film character, or a distribution agreement limited to a region. A license may become too expensive to renew, a rights holder may change terms, or a publisher may decide that the remaining sales no longer justify renegotiation, testing, and support. “Uneconomic” does not mean the software stopped working; it means keeping every required right in place no longer makes business sense under the existing deal.

What happens to a digital purchase
For a standard account-based purchase, the entitlement normally remains listed in the account library after a storefront delisting. If the platform still hosts the installer and the title does not depend on a discontinued service, you can usually redownload it on the supported platform. Sega’s November 2025 notice explicitly said selected delisted Classics would remain downloadable and playable for customers who already owned them.

Availability can still vary by platform, region, console generation, and account status. A purchase on one storefront does not automatically create an entitlement on another storefront or on a different console family. A removed listing may also stop new DLC purchases, prevent a re-download if a platform retires old infrastructure, or require a particular launcher version.
What the platform license means
On PlayStation, the US Terms of Service say: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” Those terms also describe the license as non-exclusive and revocable, state that it is not transferable, and reserve the ability to discontinue online access or servers. In practical terms, a receipt proves a transaction, but it does not by itself guarantee permanent access, transfer to another account, or a perpetual offline copy.
Subscriptions and cloud-only access
A subscription entitlement is different from an individual purchase: access lasts only while the subscription and the platform’s catalog terms provide it. A cloud-streamed version is more dependent still, because the streamed build, account authorization, and service must all remain online. Treat “included with a subscription” or “available through streaming” as access arrangements, not as ownership of a downloadable, self-contained copy.
When a delisted game can still become unplayable
Epic warns that some games require online services and that “If those services are discontinued, the game may no longer be playable even if it’s in your library.” This is the key limit on a retained entitlement. A complete single-player mode that launches without authentication may continue to work; a title that checks a publisher server, requires matchmaking, or stores essential progression online can fail after shutdown.

Common dependencies to check
- Account authentication: the game or launcher may need to verify your account before it starts.
- Publisher servers: matchmaking, leaderboards, inventories, events, or even the main game loop may run remotely.
- Third-party launchers: a storefront download can still require a separate account and client.
- Downloadable content: a campaign or licensed song may be absent if its entitlement is no longer served.
- Platform infrastructure: a console generation, store, or download service can be retired independently of the publisher’s decision.
Server closure and storefront delisting can happen separately. A title may remain downloadable after its servers close, leaving an installed but nonfunctional online game. Conversely, a game can be removed from sale while its servers and offline mode continue for years.
Physical discs: safer, but not a guarantee
A disc generally preserves the software included in the shipped build, so it can outlast a storefront listing. If that build contains a complete offline mode and does not require an account check, it may remain playable after a delisting. The disc may also let you reinstall without downloading the base program.
Physical media does not restore anything that was never on the disc. A title may need a day-one patch, a server-issued entitlement, online activation, or cloud-saved data. A closed account, unavailable launcher, or discontinued matchmaking service still breaks those functions. Disc drives, console compatibility, and region restrictions add further limits. Think of the disc as preserving one release of the software, not as preserving every service and license surrounding it.
Compare your access by purchase type

How to check whether you can still play a delisted game
- Identify the exact edition and platform. Record the storefront, console or PC launcher, region, base game, and DLC. A remaster, bundle, or regional release can have different rights and servers.
- Open the account library, not the store search. A missing store page does not prove that an owned entitlement was removed. Look under the platform’s purchased, owned, or ready-to-download section.
- Check the publisher’s support notice. Look for separate dates for sales, downloads, online services, and individual songs or add-ons. A song-level notice, such as the dated Rocksmith 2014 removals, is different from a whole-game takedown.
- Read the current system requirements and launch behavior. Note whether the title requires an account, a launcher, an internet connection, or a first-run activation. These requirements can matter even when the game is installed from a disc.
- Test the important mode offline. Disconnect the device after installation and try the campaign, saved games, and any purchased DLC. Then reconnect and test online features separately. Do not assume that a menu opening proves every mode works.
- Secure a working install. Download the game and owned add-ons while the platform still offers them, keep the account credentials and two-factor recovery methods current, and retain the physical disc if you have one. Follow the platform’s rules; do not rely on unauthorized copies or account transfers.
- Document what you bought. Keep receipts, order emails, edition names, and screenshots of the library entry. These records help support staff distinguish a missing listing from a missing entitlement.
What remedies are realistic
Possible outcomes depend on the platform terms, the reason for removal, and local law. The practical remedies are usually limited to one of these:

- Redownload: the normal result when the entitlement remains and the installer is still hosted.
- A patch or replacement edition: a publisher may remove a licensed component, substitute content, or issue a new edition, but it is not required to create a patch in every case.
- Refund: availability depends on the platform’s refund policy, timing, region, and whether the product is defective or no longer supplied as promised.
- Alternative release: a remaster, physical edition, or different storefront version may exist, but a new purchase is not automatically included with the old license.
- No practical remedy: if a required server has closed and no offline build exists, an account entitlement can remain visible while the game is unusable.
Contact support with the platform, region, order date, edition, and the exact error message. Ask whether the issue is a storefront delisting, a server shutdown, a missing entitlement, or a failed activation; those are different cases handled by different teams.

Rules vary by country, contract, edition, and date. In a June 5, 2024 answer about Ubisoft’s The Crew, the European Commission said EU consumer law requires transparency about material aspects of an offer, protects consumers against unfair practices and terms, and provides remedies for lack of conformity. It also said EU law “does not set specific requirements as to the duration of the supply of products, including online video games.” That is an EU framework statement, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction.
Before relying on a legal remedy, check the law where you bought the game, the platform’s current terms, the seller’s refund policy, and whether the problem is non-conformity, a disclosed service limitation, or a later server retirement. A platform’s license language and a country’s mandatory consumer protections can operate together; one does not automatically cancel the other.

Four delisting patterns worth remembering
Alan Wake: one soundtrack, one storefront removal
Remedy’s 2017 case shows how expiring music rights can force a complete listing removal when replacing every affected track is judged too complicated. The 90 percent discount and May 15, 2017 removal date applied to the original game and related content during that delisting event.
Rocksmith 2014: rights can expire song by song
Ubisoft’s dated notices show a different path: individual licensed songs can leave on scheduled dates while the core game remains available. Losing one song license therefore does not prove that the entire game has been delisted.
Sega Classics: existing owners retained access
Sega’s November 2025 support notice said selected Classics would stop accepting new purchases beginning December 6, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. PST, while customers who already owned them could continue to download and play them. The notice illustrates the normal separation between sales availability and an existing library entitlement.
Server-dependent titles: entitlement without playability
Epic’s support guidance covers the opposite risk: a game can remain in a library yet become unplayable when required online services end. The entitlement survives in the account record, but the service needed to use it does not.

For long-term access, rank a game by four questions: Is the copy physical or account-based? Does it launch and save offline? Does it rely on a publisher or third-party server? Is the platform and region still supported? A physical, offline-capable release has the fewest dependencies. A digital game with offline play has more account and download risk. A server-dependent or cloud-only title has the highest risk even when its store entitlement remains visible.
That is why “I paid for it” and “I can play it forever” are not equivalent statements in modern game distribution. A delisting usually ends new sales; preserving your ability to play requires an intact entitlement, a working download or disc, compatible hardware, and every service the game actually needs.
