Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your laptop speakers became quiet, distorted, or crackly after a driver or Windows update, the update may have changed the audio driver or its components—but timing alone does not prove the cause. First check the selected output and volume, restart, and run Windows’ audio troubleshooter. Before reinstalling or rolling back a driver, find the support instructions for your exact laptop model and Windows version.
Why can an update affect laptop speaker sound?
An update can change an audio driver, its installed components, or how the operating system communicates with the laptop’s audio hardware. Dell documents particular systems where an audio-driver or Windows update was associated with static, distortion, or loss of sound. Those cases do not establish one cause for every laptop.

Driver packaging and installation method can matter. Dell says that, on certain affected systems, Windows Update did not install all audio-driver components; it also identifies the installation method as a factor for some listed Realtek systems. A quiet, crackling, distorted, or silent speaker may therefore call for different troubleshooting, and the correct driver depends on the model and audio hardware.

Try these low-risk checks first
- Check the output device. Open Windows sound settings and make sure sound is going to the laptop’s built-in speakers rather than headphones, a monitor, or another connected audio device. Disconnect external audio devices and test again if the output is unclear.
- Check both system and app volume. Raise the Windows volume and check the volume in the app you are using. Test more than one app or audio source to see whether the problem is limited to one of them.
- Restart the laptop. Save your work, restart, and test the speakers again.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. In current Windows guidance, start at Settings > System > Sound and open the audio troubleshooting option. Windows labels and navigation can vary by release; follow the available sound troubleshooting prompts.
Before changing the driver, identify the laptop and audio device
Record the laptop make and full model, Windows version, audio device or chipset, and the recently installed driver version if available. Then open the laptop maker’s official support page for that exact model and operating system. Look for a documented audio issue and use the manufacturer’s instructions and package rather than a driver version intended for another model.

For a non-Dell laptop, consult its manufacturer’s support site. Dell’s model-specific cases illustrate why a version number or procedure for one Realtek or Cirrus system should not be treated as universal advice.
When an OEM driver reinstall is appropriate
Use the remedy only if it matches your model
For the Realtek systems listed in Dell’s static-noise guidance, Dell recommends uninstalling the Realtek audio driver, downloading the latest package for the specific model from Dell, reinstalling it, and restarting. That procedure is scoped to the systems covered by the article; check its model list and instructions before applying it.

Dell has also documented certain models where Windows Update did not install all audio-driver components. That article specifies Realtek driver version 6.0.9597.1 or later for listed models and a different version for XPS. These are dated, model-specific instructions—not a general recommendation to download that version for any laptop. Follow the current support page for your own model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn a separate Cirrus case, Dell identifies Inspiron 14 5420, Inspiron 16 5620, and Vostro 5620 systems with no sound following an update involving driver version 2.1.42. Dell directs affected users to uninstall that driver, install Dell Cirrus 10.0.7.46 A02 or newer, restart, and verify the installed version. Apply these steps only if your model and issue match Dell’s Cirrus support instructions.

Do not guess at rollback or removal steps
Driver rollback, uninstall, and reinstall options vary by Windows version and device. If your maker’s instructions call for one of them, follow the exact sequence on that support page. Avoid installing a package for a different model or audio chipset; an apparently similar laptop may require a different driver.

If the model-specific audio package does not resolve the issue, Dell’s broader audio guidance includes checking for BIOS and chipset updates, relevant Waves or MaxxAudio services, and possible security-software blocks; it also recommends running Windows troubleshooting and installing pending Windows updates. The exact steps depend on the model, so use the maker’s support instructions rather than treating this list as a universal sequence. Dell describes System Restore as a later option when audio worked before a recent change.

If available, test headphones or another output. If those work while the built-in speakers do not, that helps narrow the symptom to the built-in speaker path but does not by itself establish which component has failed. Use the laptop maker’s diagnostics and support guidance. Seek repair if diagnostics indicate a hardware problem or the issue persists after the recommended software recovery; speaker replacement is model-specific and should follow diagnosis.
