To check a Samsung phone, find its IMEI, look it up with an official lost-or-stolen status service where available, then ask the carrier you plan to use to confirm the phone can be activated. A clean registry result is helpful, but it is not a guarantee: reports can take time to appear, status can change, and a carrier may block a phone for reasons the registry does not show.
1. Find the Samsung phone’s IMEI
The IMEI is the device identifier used for network status checks. On many Galaxy phones, you can find it in Settings or display it with the dialer.

- Open Settings > About phone and note the IMEI.
- Alternatively, dial *#06# where supported. Samsung Support US says this displays the IMEI and serial number.
- If you cannot access the phone, check the Samsung Members app, your carrier account records, the original packaging, or the bill of sale. Menu names and availability vary by model, carrier, and software version.
Keep the IMEI private. Avoid posting it in a public comment, listing, or screenshot; give it directly to the carrier or an official lookup service through a private channel.

GSMA Device Check reports whether an IMEI is currently flagged on the GSMA Block List. The GSMA FAQ describes a green result as “The IMEI is not currently flagged on the GSMA Block List.” A red result means the identifier is flagged in that registry. The list can include devices reported lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable for network use.

Access to GSMA Device Check may depend on the audience and service agreement. GSMA describes its service for business and government users, and this does not establish that a public consumer checker is available everywhere. GSMA and CTIA announced a U.S. Stolen Phone Checker relationship in 2017, and CTIA reported a historical milestone of one million devices checked since the May 2017 launch in 2018; those announcements do not confirm current public access. For a disputed result, GSMA directs consumers to their wireless provider.
3. Have the intended carrier check activation eligibility
Before buying a used Samsung, contact the carrier you intend to use and ask it to check the IMEI for activation eligibility. A carrier can consult its own eligibility and account records, which are distinct from the shared GSMA registry. GSMA’s terms say a carrier may block a device for billing issues even when it is absent from the GSMA list; participation and blocking practices also vary by operator and country.

A green registry result only means the IMEI was not flagged in that registry when checked. It does not prove that the phone is paid off, unlocked, compatible with your carrier, authentic, or free of later reports. Ask the carrier about those requirements separately.

GSMA Device Check’s terms state that it can take up to 24 hours or longer for a report or recovery to appear, and that device status may change after a check. This is a possible delay, not a guaranteed update schedule. For a used-phone purchase, check close to the time of sale and get the intended carrier’s confirmation before handing over money.

5. What to do if the IMEI is flagged or the answers conflict
If you have not bought the phone
- Pause the purchase if the registry shows red or the seller’s explanation conflicts with the carrier’s result.
- Ask the seller to resolve the issue with the provider. GSMA says the provider is uniquely able to verify the relevant account and recent device activity.
- Do not pay on the basis of a screenshot or a seller’s assurance alone; have the intended carrier check the IMEI directly.
If you already bought it
Contact the seller or marketplace promptly about return options, and contact the wireless provider about the block. A registry lookup by itself cannot determine ownership or reverse a carrier’s decision. Follow the provider’s instructions; do not try to change or bypass an IMEI block.

Contact your carrier to report the theft and ask whether it can suspend service or block the device. Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may let you locate, lock, or erase a phone when the required settings and account access are in place. Do not go to a mapped location yourself; contact local authorities instead.
